SOCI 483, Fall 2012
Eastern Washington University
Slides from class on Tuesday, 0/16. Today served as our initial introduction to Topic 3: Theories of Childhood.
4. What questions do we typically ask about children
& their lives and experiences?
What assumptions do we rely on when doing so?
In what ways might children themselves theorize
about their lives and experiences?
5. QUESTIONING: How do...
RACE
CLASS &
GENDER
... and other issues of diversity affect children’s lives
and how children understand the world?
8. 1. Consider several of the children introduced in the first
half of Kring's novel, including Button and Winnalee. Map
out the ways in which these characters are diverse.
2. Add your conclusions at the bottom (Notes). On the
surface, the child characters may appear similar. What
types of diversity do you find? What conclusions do you draw?
10. What does this event look like from the
child’s perspective?
What is it that makes this event stand out,
from the child’s perspective?
What is important about this event, from
the child’s perspective?
11. HOMEWORK:
Finish Child Diversity map
Catch up on stuff from Topic 2 (check-out survey,
assignments, reading, etc.)
Finish Project Outline/Proposal
Read pp. 76-206 of “The Book of Bright Ideas”
Read Sternheimer (readings from Part 5)
12. I NEED YOUR HELP:
Think of some films, books or TV shows that illustrate the
diversity of children & childhood (or other issues we’ve
discussed), and that I might use in class in the future...
then send it to me! Thanks!
