Robert Ballard is an oceanographer known for discovering the Titanic wreckage in 1985. He pioneered deep-sea archaeology through developing deep-diving submersibles. Ballard argues for more funding towards ocean exploration, comparing it to NASA's budget. Increased exploration could lead to discoveries of underwater mountains, thermal vents, new life forms, and lost artifacts. Ballard has found evidence the oceans hold more potential discoveries than previously believed.
2. Robert Ballard
American oceanographer & marine geologist,
best known for his discovery of the Titanic wreckage in 1985.
Ballard’s pioneering of deep-diving submersibles laid the
foundation for deep-sea archaeology.

3. Ballard gives a clear explanation and presents facts as to why he feels we should be more concerned with the exploration of our
oceans and developing our youth to become involved in these efforts.
3
4. Comparing ocean exploration & Nasa funding, Ballard makes a key point on how the budget for Nasa
funding, if used for ocean exploration, could fund the N.O.A.H program for 1,600 years.

New Life Forms
Vents
Robert Ballard goes on to explain how key
discoveries of mountains, vents, natural resources, new life
forms, and lost archaeological, treasures have been
discovered that where thought to have never existed.

6. Dynamism Rating:
I would rate Robert Ballard’s dynamism as a
4/5, because he explained all of the
information and gave useful examples of the
topic, but I thought he could have been a bit
more detailed with some of the information.
6
7. Robert Ballard clearly followed
Mary Duarte & Garr Reynolds convention of
clear images and examples when presenting
the information and was to the point and very
informative.
7
8. Listening to the presentation from Robert Ballard has taught me that it’s
important to give examples when explaining the information you are
presenting, so that the audience can get a clear understanding of the topic and
to keep the audience involved in the presentation from beginning to end.

9. Robert Ballard vs. Ken Robinson
I thought both speakers made good use of examples and story telling to appeal to the audience and relay
the information about their separate topics. Both speakers in my opinion could have been more detailed
when explaining key points in the information, but overall the information was precise and to the point.

10. During Robert Ballard’s presentation he mentioned that the ocean floor needed to
be mapped out and that we have better maps of Venus & Mars than we do of our
own oceans. This is a map of a region of the ocean floor that he spoke about.
10
11. According to Robert Ballard’s presentation the earth is covered in 72% water. This means that over 50% of the
planet is submerged in water. It was also thought by ocean researchers that because of the depth and darkness
of the ocean that photo-synthesis could not occur to produce new life forms or sustain plant life in certain
areas, but Robert Ballard’s discoveries have given a new perspective to the subject.
11
12. New technology and equipment will be a
major contributing factor in the
exploration of the oceans in the future.
Robert Ballard has constructed and
designed a new vessel to help explore
uncharted regions of the ocean and a new
base of operations to store and analyze
data.

15. Artifacts found in the Black Sea Coast line & Location of the Black Sea
Robert Ballard has made
many discoveries and his
newest exploration
mission will take him to
the shores of the Black
Sea where some artifacts
have already been
discovered. The artifacts
are perfectly preserved
by the chemical make up
that already exists in the
Black Sea.
15
16. Robert Ballard has helped start programs with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in and
effort to stimulate the minds of our youth so that they can take on the task of exploration
for a new generation. Ballard believes that the youth can produce the next group of ocean
explorers.

17. Image of the Hercules as it is about to be submerged for exploration. Robert Ballard
designed and engineered this submersible device for deep sea exploration.
17
19. Robert Ballard has redefined ocean exploration and has given
new purpose to the exploration of the most mysterious area on
earth. There are so many unknown elements of the ocean and it
is truly worth discovering. We may need only to look to the
ocean for the worlds resources and unknown life forms and
Robert Ballard is a pioneer in the road to making that a reality.
19
20. Robert Ballard’s presentation has given a great deal of information that I
did not know about the ocean. Based on the TED talks from Robert Ballard
& Ken Robinson I would advice my classmates to be direct in explaining the
information of their topic, site examples and story telling so as to give a
better understanding to their audience, and telling a joke or two during the
presentation can only help the audience to feel comfortable and relax
during the presentation.
