Yuvee, Inc. announces issuance of US patent for its advanced
user interface system for mobile phones and other consumer
electronics.
Highland Park, Illinois. April 1, 2004.
Yuvee announces that its main United States patent - 6,703,963 - has issued for its user interface
system for mobile phones and other consumer electronics.
The Yuvee interface system gives consumers a single user interface that works across device
boundaries because that is how consumers actually use their devices. Phones, PCs, laptops and
home entertainment systems all increasingly do the same things, so why do consumers have to
learn different (and old and bad) interfaces for each one? The Yuvee interface system gives
users control over everything their devices offer - no need for long, complicated manuals; calling
help desks; tedious voice prompt systems; selecting through interminable on-screen menus; and
navigation of websites for help: text, number and command entry is easy, fast and intuitive for
everything.
Consumer electronics come packed with advanced features. Most people don’t use even a
fraction of these features. Why not? Largely because current interfaces are poorly designed for
the suite of features and services available in today’s devices.
The standard phone keypad was designed by Bell Labs in the 1940s for dialing numbers. The
PC layout keyboard (the “QWERTY”) was designed for English text on pre-electric typewriters.
The menu/select system using toggle keys and menus is an attempt to work around the
limitations of these two systems, and simply does not help most people except for a basic set of
functionality - not to mention that it uses the upper screen of the phone for user interface graphics
and menus when that screen should be dedicated to high-value visuals and media. The TV
remote is an impossible mix of buttons with strange labels, and every remote is just different
enough from the all the others as to make the user re-learn it each time.
One important clue to the failure of these interfaces is their focus on enabling text or numbers,
when the user must enter “commands” to use most of the features of today’s phones. Examples
of “commands” are “delete” in voicemail; “refresh” or “home” in a web browser; “move right” in a
game; “shuffle” in an MP3 player; “pause” in a movie player; etc.
The Yuvee system changes that 180 degrees. Tim Higginson, founder and president of Yuvee,
states: “With the Yuvee interface, any device manufacturer, software provider and service
provider can build simplicity into their products right from the start. We’ve done our homework on
how to make things easy for people, and we’re supplying the solutions to the technology
community. Devices with Yuvee will actually encourage people to use the full scope of all their
devices’ features, functionality and services, no matter how advanced.”
Distinguishing features of the Yuvee user interface include: (1) easy and fast entry of text,
numbers and commands - the three basic requirements for the next generation user interface; (2)
a set of keys and displays dedicated to showing all the features of a device, so a user can scroll
to see everything the device can do; (3) visual displays on the Yuvee interface map to whatever
2. the user chooses to do - basically a keypad that turns “What you see is what you need”
(WYSIWYN) into reality - so there is no need for manuals, voice prompts, hidden menu
structures, etc.; (4) works directly in any language at a click by the user (including easy Chinese
text entry directly by brushstroke); (5) an open architecture, software-driven, hard-key user
interface with dynamic displays so that the carriers, the media and game companies and virtually
any programmer can take utilize the power of the Yuvee interface to make anything easy for the
user; and (6) it reserves the upper screen of phones to the maximum extent for media and other
high-value visuals (such as game graphics, web pages and TV). For text entry alone, the Yuvee
user interface offers more power and features than a full-size PC keyboard. For instance, it gives
all editing keys, makes emoticons easy to use in text, and switches languages on the fly, giving
all accented letters in French and Spanish and enabling easy Asian character text entry.
