Decisions

Storage

As a DataCite datacenter you must make a few
initial decisions before you can begin to mint
DOIs for its datasets or documents.

As a DataCite datacenter you also commit to
ensure long-term storage of the objects, this
means for a minimum of ten years.

•

For which objects do you wish to mint DOIs?

- see guidance under DATA QUALITY

•

What would you want the DOIs to look like?

- see guidance under SUFFIX

•

What would be the best workflow in

your institution?

!
Maintaining the DOIs
Minting a DOI is also a commitment to maintain a
correct URL to the landing page and correct
metadata of the object.

!

CHECKLIST

Framework

RESOURCES

Landing pages
The URL of the DOI must always resolve to an
open accessible landing page that includes:
•

Metadata of the object

•

Access to the actual object

If the object is open access, the landing page
should provide a link to a direct full-text
download. If it is not open access, the landing
page should explain the access conditions
and provide a link to payment services or
other tools for gaining access.

Quality of the DOI system

Cite worthy

The quality of the DOI system relies on three
important elements:

A cite worthy object is an object that is worthy
of publication and can be useful to other
researchers in their work.

•

The research object must be cite worthy.

•

The research object must have well
described metadata.

•

!

The institution assigning the DOIs commits
to long-term storage of the object.

!

The datacenter is responsible for ensuring the
quality of the data to which they apply the DOIs.

DOI construction

Designing your suffix

Each DOI is unique and consist of two parts:

A prefix and a suffix.

When designing your suffix, you can go for
different strategies. You can either make a suffix
that makes sense for humans when they read it,
or one that is only suited for machines or

something in between.

The prefix is your institution’s identification
number. It is a six digit number and you will get
the prefix from DataCite Denmark. The suffix is
the part you can design yourself following a

few rules.
•

Each suffix must be unique

•

Only use the allowed characters

A-Z

a-z

0-9

- (dash)

. (dot)

_ (underscore)

: (colon)

/ (slash, but only if followed by alphanumeric)

The human oriented suffix has the advantage of
providing some information without resolving
the DOI. However, all suffixes are irreversible, so
if for example the name of your institution is
included and this changes in the future, the DOI
will not change accordingly.
The machine oriented suffix has the advantage
of being neutral, but does not provide any
information. Your institution is only identified by
the prefix.

EXAMPLES

Suffix
________________________
THE HUMAN ORIENTED DOI
In this construction the suffix includes the
name of the institution, the subject area
of the object and consecutive numbering.

THE MASCHINE ORIENTED DOI
Here the suffix is an arbitrary construction
of the allowed characters.

SOMETHING IN BETWEEN
A mix could be that the suffix includes

the name of the institution as well as

an arbitrary construction of the allowed
characters.

Providing the metadata

Metadata fields

The object’s metadata must be provided in an
XML file and shown on the landing page.

Depending on your object there are different
metadata fields about which you can find
detailed information on DataCite’s web.

!
Metadata are open access

The minimum requirements for all types of
objects are:

All DataCite metadata are open access and are
available for harvesting.

1) Identifier

- with type attribute

!

2) Creators

- with name identifier attributes
3) Title

- with optional type attribute
4) Publisher
5) PublicationYear

Automatic minting

Connecting to the API

You can use the DataCite API to set up
automatic DOI minting for your institution.

The actual connecting to the API requires a
person trained in handling and adapting your

IT systems.

How the API is incorporated depends on your
institutionel IT systems and which minting
workflow you prefer.

!
!

If you do not have an IT skilled person in your
staff, you can hire help from DataCite Denmark read more under SUPPORT.

  • 2. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA MANUAL MINTING API SUPPORT Decisions Storage As a DataCite datacenter you must make a few initial decisions before you can begin to mint DOIs for its datasets or documents. As a DataCite datacenter you also commit to ensure long-term storage of the objects, this means for a minimum of ten years. • For which objects do you wish to mint DOIs?
 - see guidance under DATA QUALITY • What would you want the DOIs to look like?
 - see guidance under SUFFIX • What would be the best workflow in
your institution? ! Maintaining the DOIs Minting a DOI is also a commitment to maintain a correct URL to the landing page and correct metadata of the object. ! CHECKLIST Framework ________________________ RESOURCES Landing pages The URL of the DOI must always resolve to an open accessible landing page that includes: • Metadata of the object • Access to the actual object
If the object is open access, the landing page should provide a link to a direct full-text download. If it is not open access, the landing page should explain the access conditions and provide a link to payment services or other tools for gaining access. Decision-makers ☑ Storage server ☑ Personnel to make landing pages ☑ ! ☑ Personnel to maintain the URL
and the metadata ☑ Technical personnel to set up the API ________________________ !
  • 3. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA MANUAL MINTING API SUPPORT Quality of the DOI system Cite worthy The quality of the DOI system relies on three important elements: A cite worthy object is an object that is worthy of publication and can be useful to other researchers in their work. • The research object must be cite worthy. • The research object must have well described metadata. • ! The institution assigning the DOIs commits to long-term storage of the object. ! The datacenter is responsible for ensuring the quality of the data to which they apply the DOIs. • 4. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA MANUAL MINTING API SUPPORT DOI construction Designing your suffix Each DOI is unique and consist of two parts:
A prefix and a suffix. When designing your suffix, you can go for different strategies. You can either make a suffix that makes sense for humans when they read it, or one that is only suited for machines or
something in between. The prefix is your institution’s identification number. It is a six digit number and you will get the prefix from DataCite Denmark. The suffix is the part you can design yourself following a
few rules. • Each suffix must be unique • Only use the allowed characters
 A-Z
 a-z
 0-9
 - (dash)
 . (dot)
 _ (underscore)
 : (colon)
/ (slash, but only if followed by alphanumeric)
The human oriented suffix has the advantage of providing some information without resolving the DOI. However, all suffixes are irreversible, so if for example the name of your institution is included and this changes in the future, the DOI will not change accordingly. The machine oriented suffix has the advantage of being neutral, but does not provide any information. Your institution is only identified by the prefix. EXAMPLES Suffix ________________________ THE HUMAN ORIENTED DOI In this construction the suffix includes the name of the institution, the subject area of the object and consecutive numbering. 10.5072/datacenter.area.1 Prefix Suffix ________________________ THE MASCHINE ORIENTED DOI Here the suffix is an arbitrary construction of the allowed characters. 10.5072/1234.abcz.56789:12-y Prefix Suffix ________________________ SOMETHING IN BETWEEN A mix could be that the suffix includes
the name of the institution as well as
an arbitrary construction of the allowed characters. 10.5072/datacenter.1234zz-y.5 Prefix Suffix ________________________
  • 5. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA MANUAL MINTING API SUPPORT Providing the metadata Metadata fields The object’s metadata must be provided in an XML file and shown on the landing page. Depending on your object there are different metadata fields about which you can find detailed information on DataCite’s web. ! Metadata are open access The minimum requirements for all types of objects are: All DataCite metadata are open access and are available for harvesting. 1) Identifier
 - with type attribute ! 2) Creators
 - with name identifier attributes 3) Title
 - with optional type attribute 4) Publisher 5) PublicationYear LINKS Metadata schema ________________________ METADATA SCHEMA V. 3.0 The Metadata Schema v. 3.0 is the latest schema and describes details for the aquired XML file. Choose › “Definition” to see the XML file. Choose › “Documentation” to see the description of the different elements. You can also find different examples
of XML files depending on your type
of object. http://schema.datacite.org/meta/ kernel-3/doc/DataCiteMetadataKernel_v3.0.pdf ________________________ SCHEMA REPOSITORY Earlier versions of the schema is collected in the Metadata Schema Repository. http://schema.datacite.org/ ________________________ ! !
  • 6. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA Manual minting If you only need to mint a few DOIs, you can
do so without setting up the automatic API. 1) Login at http://mds.datacite.org. 2) Write the symbol and password.

You will get a welcome mail with this information from DataCite and you are
asked to provide a password. 3) Choose › Register new Dataset. 4) Write the DOI (prefix and suffix). 5) Write the URL of the landing page. 6) Upload an XML file with the metadata
or paste the XML code directly into
 the text box. 7) Press › Save. 8) Automatic check of the information is provided including validity of the XML file. Screenshot SCREENDUMP Minting via Metadata Store MANUAL MINTING ________________________ ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ________________________ API SUPPORT
  • 7. DOI® FRAMEWORK DATA QUALITY SUFFIX METADATA SCHEMA MANUAL MINTING API SUPPORT Automatic minting Connecting to the API You can use the DataCite API to set up automatic DOI minting for your institution. The actual connecting to the API requires a person trained in handling and adapting your
IT systems. How the API is incorporated depends on your institutionel IT systems and which minting workflow you prefer. ! ! If you do not have an IT skilled person in your staff, you can hire help from DataCite Denmark read more under SUPPORT. LINKS API ________________________ DATACITE API V. 2 DataCite now use a version 2 of the API, where it is mandatory to upload the metadata of the objects to which the
DOI points. Find the description of the API from: https://mds.datacite.org/static/apidoc ________________________ ! !
