Mother and baby project Team.
Who are we?
We are the grass roots arm of the international charity BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
We are a small team of passionate, committed women who want to make a difference to
the lives of women, children and families in Kenya.
We all work on a voluntary basis giving as much time as we can to fulfilling our charities
aims and objectives. Our team consists of professionals such as midwife, nurse, public
health practitioner, social workers, teacher, teenage pregnancy specialist who all bring their
own expertise and knowledge to this project. We will make sure all the help we get such as
funds and donations is spent wisely and directly on our charitable objectives
We know we are lucky to be born in a part of the world where we can get food, water,
shelter, medical help and education for our children. We know we can help our children to
grow to reach their potential because we have the structures and services available to us to
help us …..in the area of Kenya we are working in this is difficult or impossible as these are
not accessible or available .
We are born equal and all deserve the Basic Human Rights to survive, to be born and
remain safe ,to thrive and grow and to have a chance of a fulfilling, productive life.
That is why we .start our work with families at the very beginning of life …in pregnancy and
birth ………

Our work in Kenya
Mother and Baby project – Kenya
Our vision is to implement sustainable lasting change to the health and wellbeing of
vulnerable mothers and children in Kenya
Every woman deserves the Basic Human Right to give birth safely and have a normal Healthy
baby….. The Mother and Baby Project is a prevention model of care which reaches out into
the communities of the most vulnerable women in society.
What we know ….. The facts:
A woman’s body is designed to give birth
safely’
So why is it that ………
In 24hrs 1497 women will die in childbirth in
Africa.
Maternal & infant mortality is at
unacceptable levels in Kenya.
60 % of women do not see any health
professional in the whole of their pregnancy,
birth or postnatal periods.
Usually women give birth at home without a
trained health professional present.
The loss of a mother harms her surviving
family members, and her children’s health,
education and future opportunities.
1 in 17 women die from preventable causes
in our chosen district of Kenya
In the developed world this is1 in 8000!

We want to make a difference to these families ….. you can too.

3. Our project has been piloted for two years in this region and has proven that it can change
the shocking outcomes which face women and their children. Working holistically we are
able to empower women to have the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about

their health and that of their families.
All parents want a healthy baby and happy children we aim to support women throughout
their pregnancy and post-natally to ensure they are able to achieve this. We are well placed
to be able to help others within the family to access education and sport. We are able to
improve the health of the whole family. By using local woman to implement this service we
are able to increase employment and health education. Our workers fully understand the
many barriers women face in the deprived communities of Mombasa and are able to work
effectively to support them and help to save and improve their lives. What we offer :
Antenatal care, birth support, postnatal care, sexual health and contraception education,
free medical camps ,free food camps. Health talks, signposting to other medical and local
support services. Sports programmes, education inclusion activities e.g. .uniforms, books.

Health Sport & Education Project Kenya
Our charity would like to help increase access to sport and exercise in Kenya as part of our
health objectives. The benefits are well researched and increasing access to exercise and
sport are crucial to improving the health of both parents and children. We are working to
deliver sport and education programmes . Helping men and women and children to become
healthier and promote community cohesion. Engaging families in sporting activities improves
family relationships and reduces incidences of abuse. This is an ideal way for dads interact
with their children thus building strong attachments - lead by Tina Leslie.
Kleen up a village in Kenya – Environmental
clean-up project - aims to reduce the spread of disease and improve
community play areas for children. Increase community cohesion and a better place to live.
We are working with a
self – help group in Tmondoni village to deliver a clean-up campaign to keep the rubbish
from the play and community areas as well as a refuse collection service for the homes of the
villagers. This will be run by village members for the people of that village. Improving health
and helping the community to work together, to achieve a safer cleaner environment for
their children.

This is collectively what we are trying to do.
You can help in a small or a big way. Many small spiders can tie up a lion !!!!

families in Kenya. Families where everyone has experienced malnutrition, death
of a child or family member, serious illness and disease. Lack of the Basic needs
we all enjoy in the developed world.

6. MEDICAL CAMP for the poor people in one of our villages which will highlight all the aspects
of our grassroots work .
A free fun day for the children, as well as offering free medical checks for the pregnant
women and their children. Free food will be available to the many families who are in
desperate need as 90% are suffering from malnutrition.
A local football tournament will be held for the young men will bring the village together
before we start our Kleen up campaign and phase three of our Mother and baby project next
year .
