- Are your company’s internal websites connected to your company’s most important information.
- If so, is it a real time stream of information or does it go stale quickly?
- If you’re using SharePoint and it’s not connected to External data – and by that, I mean all that stuff important to your company that’s not stored in SharePoint, the answer is no
- But I’ve got good news! – If you’ve got anything newer than SharePoint Server 2010. You’ve got a great way to connect to the missing information. – That’s what you’re going to learn about today.
- I met some of you before the session. For those that don't know me, my name's Tom Resing. I'm a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist in 4 areas related to SharePoint. I'm certified in configuring WSSv3, configuring MOSS, and application development for both of them.My first programming job was in high school in Washington, DC. I got my Computer Science Degree from Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois almost 12 years ago. I've been in the technology field my entire career.
- Here’s the Agenda. We’ll start with an Overview of the BDCThen I’ll jump straight into demos. First we’ll look at the BDC in use, then we’ll look at how to set it up. I’ll show you where you can learn more and take questions at the end.
- A set of capabilities in SharePoint 2010 and 2013 that help you integrate external data into your SharePoint websites and Office Clients.
- If you do a lot of work in SharePoint or Outlook, but store your tasks elsewhere, for example, pulling them in through bcs allows you to view them where you view other important information
- Your options are pretty wide open here. Any data you have in an Oracle or SQL Server Database any ODBC data source or in some cases, Web Services is available.
- I’ll demonstrate one of the web parts and search. With a little more work, you can get the other pieces working, as well. I’ve used User Profile Import for HR data exported from PeopleSoft to a SQL Server. It wasn’t easy, but it looked great in the end.

- Editions of 2013 – All have BCS, some have more functionality than others.
- Why? 2 Reasons. #1 Compelling Data
- The data is the base you build on. We’re connecting to external data. So that’s data outside of SharePoint. When the data is consumed, people turn it into information. The ultimate goal is to build knowledge. That only comes after the basics are fulfilled.
- The second reason for leveraging business connectivity services is, simply put, Microsoft. If you make heavy use of Microsoft products BCS will fit in best. There is no BCS without Windows Server and SharePoint. But beyond that, if you’re an Outlook and Office user you benefit. BCS integrates with those products and using it feels more natural when you’re used to using those products.
- When I created the demo in 2013 almost everything was the same. I got a few different messages like “This shouldn’t take to long” and “Working on it”, but otherwise, I followed the exact same steps in Central Admin to set up the service application and the exact same steps in SharePoint Designer 2013
- Some backend changes that may improve performance in some situations. For example , sort requests are now sent to the external system which reduces the load on SharePoint Servers.
