- 9. Explain (info) The Earth’s crust and upper part of the mantle are thought to consist of large pieces called tectonic plates.
- 10. Explain (info) Scientists believe that there are convection currents within the mantle. The mantle is mostly solid but is able to move slowly.
- 11. Explain (info) The plates move relative to each other at a few cm each year. San Andreas Fault, California It is thought that the convection currents cause this.
- 12. Explain (info) The edges of the plates are called plate boundaries . At some plate boundaries the plates try to slide past each other. The location of earthquakes in the last 30 years.
- 13. Explain (info) The plates are moving against each other all the time but they cannot slide because of friction. The energy gets stored . An earthquake happens when this movement energy finally overcomes the friction and all the stored energy is released at once in a sudden movement. The edges of the plates are rough, like sandpaper.
