1. Reagans War: The Epic Story of His
Forty-Year Struggle and Final
Triumph Over Communism by Peter
Schweizer
What America Is Missing Today
Reagan’s War is the story of Ronald Reagan’s personal and political
journey as an anti-communist, from his early days as an actor to his years
in the White House. Challenging popular misconceptions of Reagan as an
empty suit who played only a passi ve role in the demise of the Soviet
Union, Peter Schweizer details Reagan’s decades-long battle against
communism.
Bringing to light previously secret information obtained from archives in the
United States, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Russia—including
Reagan’s KGB file—Schweizer offers a compelling case that Reagan
2. personally mapped out and directed his war against communism, often
disagreeing with experts and advisers. An essential book for
understanding the Cold War, Reagan’s War should be read by open-
minded readers across the political spectrum.
Personal Review: Reagans War: The Epic Story of His Forty-
Year Struggle and Final Triumph Over Communism by Peter
Schweizer
After the March 1981 attempt on his life, Ronald Reagan came to believe
that he had been spared so that he could be used to defeat Soviet
Communism. In this outstanding book, Peter Schweizer looks at the
Gipper's four-decade-long clash, beginning with his opposition to
Communists in Hollywood in the 1940s.
Schweizer recalls Reagan's anti-Communist activities in the '50s and early
'60s, as well as his support for Barry Goldwater in 1964 and his election as
governor of California two years later.
One can readily see why the electorate turned to Reagan in 1980 after
reading the book's description of the gain in Soviet power in the 1970s.
The Russians developed a powerful navy to challenge American
domination of the wor ld's oceans, and perhaps the most chilling passage
of the entire book is the one describing the underground storehouses in
East Germany that contained street signs and new currency that the
Communists were going to use after their planned conquest of Western
Europe.
However, the greatest president of the 20th century did not plan to allow
the Soviets to conquer Western Europe or anyplace else. Schweizer
includes the following quote, which as much as any other shows the
indomitable will Reagan displayed toward communism:
"I wanted to become president of the United States so I could sit down with
Brezhnev. And I was going to let him pick out the size of the table, and I
was going to listen to him tell me, the American president, what we were
going to have to give up. And I was going to listed to him for maybe twenty
minutes, and then I was going to get up from my side of the table, walk
around to the other side, and lean over and whisper in his ear, 'Nyet'. It's
been a long time since they've heard 'nyet' from an American president."
After Jimmy Carter's disastrous four years in office, Reagan did get his
opportunity to be commander-in-chief, and Schweizer shows how Reagan
implemented his policies, talks about the Solidarity movement, discusses
the development of SDI, and recalls the dramatic summits with Mikhail
Gorbachev. According to the author, at one of those summits, Reagan told
the Soviet leader, "I do hope for the sake of our children that we can find
some way to avert this terrible, escalating ar ms race...because if we can't,
America will not lose it, I assure you".
3. Schweizer closes by recalling the degree to which Reagan was willing to
stand alone, if necessary, to defeat the Soviet Union and change world
history.
This inspiring book would be enjoyed by anyone who wants to know the
full story of how America, under Ronald Reagan's leadership, consigned
the Soviet Union to the ash heap of history.
