Second Superpower The term “second superpower” has had a number of meanings, but the most recent was coined in 2003, when New York Times journalist Patrick Tyler described the force of popular opinion around the world as a second superpower. Many activist organizations seized on the idea, and this usage of the term quickly spread, appearing in a range of publications from prestigious newspapers to activist newsletters. The “first superpower” in this case is the United States, a nation with tremendous influence over the rest of the world, thanks to its powerful economy, strong military and muscular political force. During many parts of the 20th century, Russia was the “second superpower,” as many people believed that Russia had the ability to take on the United States in a war, although the loss of life would probably have been quite great. With the decline of Russia's power, however, a void was left in the global power structure, allowing the United States to achieve a position of supremacy. In 2003, however, people turned out in the millions all over the world on 15 February to protest the impending American involvement in Iraq. These protests attracted a great deal of attention, as they occurred in cities all over the world, demonstrating a global distaste with the war. Tyler wrote about this display of public opinion as a second superpower, and many people interpreted this to mean that activism and global opinion could change the course of government events. Some people have also suggested that the European Union could become a second superpower in its own right, as its individual member nations have displayed a remarkable propensity for organization, and the European Union began to become a force in global politics shortly after it was founded, thanks to the collective economic and political strength of its members. Numerous prominent people and organizations began to talk about the role of the second superpower in global politics, ranging from United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Greenpeace. Despite the fact that the massive anti-war protests which inspired the term were ineffective, many people still believe that individuals have the power to influence their governments, and that united “hearts and minds,” as a journalist put it, can have an impact on the world. Introduction The Second World War took place in the years between 1939 and 1945 and involved many countries around the world, including the United States of America. During this war, the countries involved had grouped themselves into two alliances namely the Allied forces and the Axis forces. The former consisted of the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the Republic of China, and France among other countries. The latter, on the other hand consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan among others. The war came to an end in 1945 after the United State’s decisive bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, sealing the Allied forces’ victory over the Axis forces. As a result of this war, there was massive loss of lives among the military personnel and also civilians, in addition to the destruction of property and the ruining of world economies. Most important to this paper, the Second World War also affected United State’s global perspective as will be discussed in the next part. How World War II affected America’s Global Perspective The Second World War led to the emergence of the United States as an important global player. Together with the Soviet Union, the two countries emerged as world superpowers and their competing ideologies of capitalism versus communism in the years to come ushered in the Cold War which lasted for forty years, until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Secondly, the war changed the way the United States viewed global stability and security. Recognizing the failure of the League of Nations which had been formed after the First World War with the primary mandate to prevent the outbreak of another war, the United States with its allies oversaw the dissolution of the body and its replacement with the current United Nations. At the same time, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was written by a committee presided by Former First Lady Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt and the instrument, which forms an important cornerstone as far as human rights are concerned, was adopted by members of the newly established United States. It is also important to mention that to correct the atrocities committed during the war by the Nazi regime and the Japanese forces, the Nuremburg Trials were conducted to prosecute and punish the architects of the horrors of the war. Thirdly, as was noted earlier, the war saw the near-destruction of world economies, especially in Europe and Japan. The United States therefore came up with a stimulus package that was aimed at rebuilding the ruined economies. Through the Marshall Plan, the economies of France, Great Britain, Belgium, West Germany, Italy, as well as Netherlands were revived in a record of less than five years. One area where the president’s tweets have been particularly influential is in the US relationship with North Korea. As of October 2018, President Trump has tweeted about North Korea more than 150 times since taking office. And while the tweets may not appear on the official @POTUS account or come in a statement on White House letterhead, they have played an integral role in American-North Korean relations. For example, on August 11, 2017, the president tweeted this: Military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely. Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path! At a mere twenty-three words, the president stated what could have easily been seen as a military threat against North Korea that could have led to direct conflict. Realizing the potential implications of tweets like this from the president, US officials at the February 2018 Munich Security Conference reportedly told their counterparts not to pay attention to what the president is tweeting.1 However, in March 2018, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, apparently under pressure because of the president’s rhetoric, broached the idea of a summit between the two leaders. Structural Realism after the Cold War Kenneth N. Waltz Some students of international politics believe that realism is obsolete.1 They argue that, although realism’s concepts of anarchy, self-help, and power balancing may have been appropriate to a bygone era, they have been displaced by changed conditions and eclipsed by better ideas. New times call for new thinking. Changing conditions require revised theories or entirely different ones. True, if the conditions that a theory contemplated have changed, the theory no longer applies. But what sorts of changes would alter the international political system so profoundly that old ways of thinking would no longer be relevant? Changes of the system would do it; changes in the system would not. Within-system changes take place all the time, some important, some not. Big changes in the means of transportation, communication, and war �ghting, for example, strongly affect how states and other agents interact. Such changes occur at the unit level. In modern history, or perhaps in all of history, the introduction of nuclear weaponry was the greatest of such changes. Yet in the nuclear era, international politics remains a self-help arena. Nuclear weapons decisively change how some states provide for their own and possibly for others’ security; but nuclear weapons have not altered the anarchic structure of the international political system. Changes in the structure of the system are distinct from changes at the unit level. Thus, changes in polarity also affect how states provide for their security. Signi�cant changes take place when the number of great powers reduces to two or one. With more than two, states rely for their security both on their Kenneth N. Abstract: This study examined United States and democratization in Iraq. The study was anchored on the democratic peace theory as propounded by Immanuel Kant in 1795. The study adopted ex-post research design while data was gotten from secondary source such as textbooks, journal articles, newspapers, magazines and internet and the data generated was analyzed through content analysis. The findings of the study showed that The United States efforts to adoptive democracy was widely implemented by a range of governmental and nongovernmental actors in Iraq, but it has yielded far less than what was promised and United States interest has had negative effects on democratization in Iraq as the dissolution of the Iraqi army has resulted to security vacuum in Iraq. Based on the findings the study recommended among others; Democracy should not be seen as a United States import but rather an indigenous adaptation of general principles by Iraqi people.

PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN’S DOCTRINE PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN’S DOCTRINE INTRODUCTION President Ronald Reagan, originally an American actor and politician, became the 40th president of United States serving from the year 1981 to 1989. His term saw a restoration of prosperity at home, with the goal of achieving “peace through strength” abroad. At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to reinvigorate the American people and reduce their reliance upon government. He felt he had fulfilled his campaign of 1980 “the great confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism”. Diplomatic efforts and situations during his time in office During his early times in office when he fired thousands of striking air traffic controllers who refused his orders to return to work hence commencing a war and fiery debates in congress, some were harsher still in their judgments but the average black American thinks Regan is responsible for the rebirth of racism in his regime, then fights ensued over whether to add his name in public subways in Washington and change signage name in the airport and these led to cut social services and taxes. Increased military spending started in illegal war in Central America financed by selling weapons to Iran (Iran –contra gate). Some people became very rich and others became very poor. Reaganomics ended up a complete failure. Unemployment went down but the budget deficit exploded. Over a million people became homeless. Crack became an epidemic; cities became crime ridden while traders on Wall Street became millionaires. Most economics today agree that the financial crisis we have now has its roots in the Reagan years. In many ways, the fight over Reagan’s legacy intensified because of the rise of the tea party movement. For two decades, Reaganism was the goal of Republicans-a unifying theme and a government philosophy. But over the past two years then, some of that focus has shifted to the tea party, which is the first post-Reagan conservative governing philosophy to emerge. Reagan’s polices do not sync up with the party’s agenda or Sarah Palin’s agenda, they were extremist and so in that have made Reagan look tamer (Janet & Steven 2001). 10.1 Origins of the Cold War World War II left most of Europe in shambles. Millions were homeless because the war destroyed thousands of homes, businesses, and public buildings. The European economy was similarly devastated, with much of the industrial infrastructure destroyed or heavily damaged. Great Britain was heavily in debt to the United States and was forced to borrow even more to begin reconstruction. The Soviet Union had suffered severe population losses, including nearly 8.7 million military deaths and 19 million noncombat deaths from starvation, disease, and German prison camps and mass shootings. The USSR also experienced a significant reduction in industrial and food production in the immediate postwar period. Unable to quickly rebuild, European business elites, conservatives, and even liberals lost ground to Socialists and Communists, who supported the nationalization of banks, manufacturing, and utilities. Smaller European nations such as Greece and Italy also saw major advances by their own homegrown Communist parties. At the war’s end, the United States, with its political stability and rapid economic growth, stood as the lone strong nation among the struggling former combatants. Still, some feared that a Communist upsurge could shake the United States and challenge the nation’s traditions of free enterprise and capitalism. In this uncertain environment, despite its huge losses, the Soviet Union was the only other world power that had the ideological confidence and military might to join the United States in shaping the new world order. Although the United States and the USSR depended on one another for victory in the war, the alliance between them was tenuous. The Soviets’ Communist-based ideology, culture, and economic system, as well as the dictatorial control of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, stood in stark contrast to American democratic values and capitalism. Although some hoped that the alliance between the two nations would last beyond the war, the relationship quickly began to unravel once the common threat of German aggression was removed. The United States and the Soviet Union became locked in a protracted struggle in which their clash of ideas and values was as central as their military and diplomatic rivalry. Beginning in the immediate postwar era, this so-called Cold War was as integral to the restructuring of the new world order as was the physical rebuilding of war-torn Europe and Japan. Roots of the Conflict When Harry S. Truman assumed the presidency following Roosevelt’s death in April 1945, he faced some of the most delicate and worrisome troubles of any American president. Second Superpower

1. Second Superpower The term “second superpower” has had a number of meanings, but the most recent was coined in 2003, when New York Times journalist Patrick Tyler described the force of popular opinion around the world as a second superpower. Many activist organizations seized on the idea, and this usage of the term quickly spread, appearing in a range of publications from prestigious newspapers to activist newsletters. The “first superpower” in this case is the United States, a nation with tremendous influence over the rest of the world, thanks to its powerful economy, strong military and muscular political force. During many parts of the 20th century, Russia was the “second superpower,” as many people believed that Russia had the ability to take on the United States in a war, although the loss of life would probably have been quite great. With the decline of Russia's power, however, a void was left in the global power structure, allowing the United States to achieve a position of supremacy. In 2003, however, people turned out in the millions all over the world on 15 February to protest the impending American involvement in Iraq. These protests attracted a great deal of attention, as they occurred in cities all over the world, demonstrating a global distaste with the war. Tyler wrote about this display of public opinion as a second superpower, and many people interpreted this to mean that activism and global opinion could change the course of government events. Some people have also suggested that the European Union could become a second superpower in its own right, as its individual member nations have displayed a remarkable propensity for organization, and the European Union began to become a force in global politics shortly after it was founded, thanks to the collective economic and political strength of its members. Numerous prominent people and organizations began to talk about the role of the second superpower in global politics, ranging from United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Greenpeace. Despite the fact that the massive anti-war protests which inspired the term were ineffective, many people still believe that individuals have the power to influence their governments, and that united “hearts and minds,” as a journalist put it, can have an impact on the world.
