they will be comforted.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Peace in sacred texts – NT

•Jewish background to
peace – 5 th
commandment: “You
shall not kill” (Ex 20:13;
cf. Mt 5:21); also the
word shalom


•Peace is ‘relational’ –
it exists between
people and God, or
between individuals or
among communities



•Peace as individual (‘navel gazing’) is
not found in the Jewish scriptures, nor
in the Christian Scriptures, as a
recommended
trait.



•Jesus not only offers peace (Jn 14:27)
but embodies this peace in his own
person – ministry, death and resurrection
(Eph 2:14)

•Jesus cures woman afflicted by a 12 year
flow of blood – ‘Daughter, your faith has
made you well, go in peace, and be
healed of your disease’ (Mk 5:34)


•John’s Gospel – bestowal of peace on
disciples after the resurrection


•Luke contains greatest number of
references to peace


• Luke 1:79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of
death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
• Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those
with whom he is pleased!”
• Luke 2:29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant* depart in peace,
according to your word;
• Luke 7:50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in
peace.”
• Luke 8:48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well;
go in peace.”
• Luke 10:5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’
• Luke 10:6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him.
But if not, fit will return to you.


• Luke 12:51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I
tell you, but rather division.
• Luke 14:32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a
delegation and asks for terms of peace.
• Luke 19:38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the
Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
• Luke 19:42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day
the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
• Luke 24:36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood
among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”
