“What do we know already about smart and liveable cities?”
The objective is to manage knowledge to:
1)identify and recognise the forms and functions of “smart and liveable cities”;
2)support an evolving framework for collaborative urbanism in partnership with
citizens.
To compile state-of-the-art information, knowledge and data (1 st year bottom-up)
Target
Main open question: how the “software” and “hardware” of cities can address
societal, economic and political challenges.
Priorities: The platform will identify the sources, type and volume of digital data
available and even more importantly the gaps in data needed to understand the
needs, preferences and behaviour of citizens.
Covered topics Governance, User Needs and Attitudes, Urban Design, Public Health, Entrepreneurship,
Digital Data Sources/Technology, etc.
Being comprehensive is not possible just start from what we need!

Notes
6. Final website: first set of “special tools” to tailor the website on the “people
friendly cities” stakeholders (under development):
• Innovative indexing system (window to info out in the world, including
our own SOAs, on “Smart / Liveable Cities”) (referent: Arturas Kaklauska)
• Repository of documents/videos from meetings of TU1204, STSMs,
SOARs, etc. based on Slideshare and Youtube (referent: Lorena Pocatilu)
• Repository of Case Studies (including the digest of external
sources)/“How To” Guides on Living Labs and Collaborative Urbanism
based on a standard format (referent: Francesco Rizzi)
• Networking of participants (LinkedIn group), including a room for posting
ideas for research projects (referent: Carmen Lastres)
• Evolving bibliography for Smart/Liveable Cities (based on Endnote?)
(referent: Mary-Lee Rhodes)
• Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) (referent: Mary-Lee Rhodes)
• Mapping tools (e.g. OpenStreetMap) (referent: Giulia Melis)

8. First set of state-of-the-art reviews (SOAs) that would serve as catalysts for
further developments (to be integrated through LinkedIn to design a first book
that will be followed by the one based on the PhD day):
• Reference Cities – evaluate their status as a ‘people-friendly city’ and
inventory / classify their (data-rich?) projects heading in this direction
(referent: Mary-Lee Rhodes)
• Participative processes for urban sustainability projects and new business
models on people friendly cities (referent: Francesco Rizzi)
• Use of sensors for improving urban livability (referent: Arturas Kaklauska)
• OGD (Open Government Data) implementations (referent: Lorena Pocatilu)
• Use of Volunteered geographic information (VGI) to inform planning/policy
processes and privacy issues in a “Data-rich” world (Referent: Guilia Melis)

10. Next steps
SOARs book:
•In Madrid the book feasibility has been proved by potential contributions from Francesco, Giulia,
Carmen, Lorena, Arturas, Mary Lee. Sara, Patricia, Victoria, Liliana, Michel, Lars and Bulent are
committed to contribute as well. Others may add in due course.
•Mark, Sara, Patricia, Francesco and Bulent will serve as editorial board
•They will circulate a concept by the end of February
•Next steps (i.e. receive abstracts; abstract review; receive full chapters; chapters review; editorial
process) should target the end of the year as deadline.
Definition of people friendly city:
•Specific Open discussion on LinkedIn: possibility to write 4 sentences (what is a people friendly
city and what is not) -> write to cost.tu1204@gmail.com
•Creation of a tag could
