What is an adjective?

Adjectives are words that describe

They sharpen and polish the meaning of the nouns around them.

paint a picture They help the writer with words

Adjectives usually answer one of the following questions…

Lets add some adjectives to a couple of sentences.

The man was walking his dog.

What are the nouns we want to modify ?

Now, let’s modify, or slightly change, man and dog.

What kind of man? tall short young old

What kind of dog? Large Small Black White

Now we have a sentence that draws us a better picture.

The tall, young, man was walking the large, black, dog.

That’s what adjectives do!

The nouns we want to modify are… bird & food

What kind of bird? robin pigeon crow Blue Jay

Which robin? fat baby hungry noisy

The hungry baby robin had food.

What kind of food? Worms Bugs Beetles Bread crumbs

The hungry, baby robin had bread crumbs.

How many bread crumbs? some several a few

Here is our new sentence, sharpened and polished with modifiers

The hungry, baby robin had a few bread crumbs.

Now that you’ve seen what adjectives can do… it’s your turn!

On your paper, rewrite the sentence you will see on the final slide. Add at least 3 adjectives to modify the nouns.

Then we’ll go around the room, and you can share your sentences!
