  1. Technology integration is crucial in science and math because it allows students to build conceptual knowledge.
  2. [After this activity] Although we know the importance of integrating technology, there are issues that make technology integration challenging in both math and science.
  3. Accountability for Standards: The primary resource and guide for all mathematics education is NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. 6 crucial principles related to all school mathematics programs that enhance student learning: equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment, and technology There are a total of 10 standards for Pre-K through 12th grade: 5 content standards (numbers and operations, algebra/geometry, measurement, data analysis, probability) and 5 process standards (problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, representations) These principles and standards guide how to prepare students with the mathematical knowledge for a highly technological society & workplace Implementing the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics The previous mentioned standards call for teachers to change their teaching styles Technology makes learning more student-centered Technology allows for more visualization and makes the abstract more concrete 3 Implications for the Selection & Use of Technology in Math Education Appropriate combination of on & off computer activities Math tool not a pedagogical tool Tool for developing student thinking Accomplish these goals by using computer software and apps that engage students in meaningful problems & projects for long periods of time; must have coherence. Math Wars: Directed vs. Constructivist Teaching Strategies Constructivist teaching is student-centered teaching (group work, hands-on projects, discussions) Technologies available to support either method but approach by the teacher determines the integration strategies On-going debate between the two methods of instruction

  5. Accountability for Standards National research Council (NRC) published the National Science Educational Standards (NSES) in 1996. These are the guidelines for assessing student learning in science; teaching strategies, teacher PD, support for high-quality science education Promote inquiry-oriented science instriction; which is where technology can play an important and integral role Students can use innovative technology tools and resources such as search engines, databases, model building software, & handheld technologies as data collection tools to engage in real-world investigations and communicate their findings Narrowing Pipeline of Scientific Talent STEM Intiatives  to provide long-term economic & national security Need for Scientific Literacy Scientifically literate to make informed decisions that affect our country’s future Difficulties in Teaching K-8 Difficulty tecahing science at early levels due to teacher’s lack of deep understanding Soulution  Provide on-line PD opportunities Objections to Virtual Science Labs Doing science (hand-on) rather than hearing about it Virtual schools  computer simulations Solution  provide school lab experiences

Authentic Online Projects Active scientific investigations improves students attitudes and understanding of scientific concepts Gives students experience with the scientific approach (asking questions, researchable hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, communicating results) Scientific Inquiry Support Teachers do not allows have time to commit to long-term projects that encompass the entire scientific process. However, various technologies can provide support for specific elements of the scientific inquiry process. Support Science Skills and Concepts Learning On-line science lessons and games can provide motivational ways to supplement hands-on instruction Engineering Through Robotics Robotics allows for technology and engineering to be taught through science classes NASA is an excellent resource for lessons and competitions. Accessing Science Information and Tools The Internet is an unlimited source of data for classroom experiments and investigations, camps and competitions, and up-to-date science infprmation.
  7. Science and Mathematics Knowledge Math and science content constantly changes and teachers must constantly keep current on these changes. Crucial for early education teachers to become content experts in math and science. Pedagogical Knowledge Teachers are challenged to find the most effective, engaging, and motivational way to teach math and science while raising achievement. Online pedagogy is the most challenging and research is still being conducted on teaching practices for virtual environments. Schools are challenged by providing authentic learning experiences and preparing students for high-stakes testing. Technology Knowledge Teachers must become masters of the technology tools for science and math. They must become experts of virtual manipulatives, graphing calculators, spreadsheets, etc. Must learn how to use distance education tools also to stay updated on their content and pedagogy.
