This report summarizes the findings of a survey of 354 students between the ages of 14-18 about their views and plans regarding college education. Key findings include that most students see college as necessary to get a good job, and feel it is worth the costs and time. However, many are concerned about affordability. The majority plan to attend a 4-year public university, but finances will influence their final decisions. Face-to-face interactions remain most effective for colleges to connect with students.

process of deciding
whether or not to
“I think you first must find colleges that will Accept you and then go to college?
determine your major. Depending on how much money and far away and
how good of a school it is, I will make my selection.”
“You need to go to college these days in order to get a good job. Where I
go to college depends on how good my grades are, where I can get
scholarships and how far away my parents are willing to let me go.”
“Not going has never been an option for me. My parents have instilled in
me the importance of a college education. I can't imagine being able to
succeed without it. For school selection we researched my field of
interest and schools that were offering programs, and where they
ranked.”
“The process is very difficult because there are so many choices and
variables involved. I think it is just too time consuming and confusing
and expensive.” buzzmg.com

and my life.”
“A college degree is mandatory for a position. A college degree may not
get you the job but it opens doors. It is becoming a requirement to have a
college degree. The competition for a job is unbelievable and if you have
a college degree you are a step up from others who do not have a
degree.”
“I think that highly educated people attended college, strong people
that want to succeed in life.”
“When I think of college I think of pressure to achieve a GPA and test
scores that qualify me for the schools I wish to attend. I think of stress
and more stress.” buzzmg.com
22. Where do you see
yourself 5 years
from now?
“In 5 years I see my self still in school working on my masters degree
and continuing to study, trying to obtain the highest degree possible.”
“I see myself with my new college degree, at my first job and in my first
apartment.”
“I will hopefully have graduated and have a great job and will be saving
up to continue my studies depending on my major.”
“I see myself successful. I see myself enjoying the fruits of my labor
and having choices because of my decision to attend college. This is what
I hope at least.” buzzmg.com
23. What advice would
you give your
underclassmen who

“Don't go into debt for undergrad. It's not worth it. Find a good state
school with an excellent reputation in the area of study in which you
are interested. Then, you can take on some debt for graduate school.”
“Start early. There are so many colleges out there it is overwhelming
and the earlier you start looking the more opportunities you will have
to make smart decisions. Your senior year is so busy it is hard to fit
everything in. And there are also many scholarships available that can
be applied for before your senior year so take advantage of those.”
“Don't take any classes just to get an easy A. They probably won't
prepare you for college. Do what you love and love what you do.”
