2. • Firstly, I would like to consider the coherences between my ancillary texts i.e. my Digi-
Pak and my poster, and my main text; the video. One way they are intertwined would
be through the constant themes of weightlessness and freedom. The video is
applicable to these themes through not only the use of Steadicam, making smooth
almost gravity defying shots, but also through the narrative, in that the character is
breaking free from sort of personal peril, into a state of freedom and personal
discovery. My Digi-Pak and poster also employ these traits through the use of galaxy
and star images; these connote anti-gravity as they are images of space. All of these
coherences that my texts employ all come together to form a further connotation and
representation of the artist in general, suggesting that through his music he is able to
break free or escape from reality, and do what he enjoys. This is further reflected
through the ‘Thanks’ message on in the inside of my Digi-Pak, reflecting an interest
and gratitude towards his fans for enabling his dream to become a reality. His feeling
of escapism through music is also something he wishes his fans could enjoy as well,
hoping to allow them to escape from the mundane into a state of freedom and
nostalgia, through his music.
3. • I would think that all of my texts meet the conventions and typicality’s of the Drum &
Bass genre well. I took inspiration from various existing Digi-Pak’s, posters and videos
to ensure that my products were as close to and as accurate to appeal to the genre as
I could. For my video I took inspiration from Titanium’s video by David Guetta; a well-
known Drum & Bass artist. In the video, the main character goes on a journey and is
pursued by Steadicam, which is exactly what I did in my video; I have seen others that
employ this tactic of telling a story as well. My Digi-Pak is conceptual and at times
simplistic, this is conventional of the genre and I have taken inspiration from Sub
Focus’ old albums, which usually consist of a main central object, surrounded by
scenery. The poster is very similar to my Digi-Pak as well, these are similar
intentionally, as this is something that is employed by many Drum & Bass artists, and
artists in general because it allows recognisability and consumer recognition that the
two texts are related and for the same purpose.
4. • Finally I feel like all of my texts, including ancillary texts, display not only conventions
of typical products in the music industry, but also appeal to the Drum & Bass genre as
well. I feel this as regards my video in that I have striven to use camera angles and
shots that look as professional as possible, hence the use of Steadicam to get as
smooth shots as possible, and as the equipment used obviously isn’t of as high of a
quality as equipment used in the industry, I have attempted to get the highest possible
quality out of the equipment I have used. My Digi-Pak also displays many conventions
of existing Digi-Pak’s. Displaying the artists name, album name, track list, thank you
note, barcode, copyright information, record label information and a clean and
professional looking design are all things that can be found in my text and in real world
texts. The example given is of Alt-J’s Matilda, in which all of the things just mentioned
are displayed and can also be found in my work. My poster is also conventional of
real-world products, in that it is highly coherent and related to the Digi-Pak, and also
contains social media platforms on which to contact the artist, and information
pertaining to the release of the album. Example given is of Turisa’s tour poster, which
shows a link to social media, as well as a strong image.
