Evaluation question 1
1. Evaluation Question 1:
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
2. Firstly before even starting the production of our short film. We
had to identify the forms and conventions of short films.
To do this, we watched various short films from different
sources:
• BFI short film DVD
• BBC Film Network
• YouTube
3. After watching various short films, we were able to identify the
codes and conventions of short films.
4. Limited Characters
Our film has used the convention of having limited characters.
By doing this, we allow the audience to only focus on our two
main characters, Mohammed and William, so that they can keep
up with the main story.
5. Limited Locations
The whole of the short film is shot in different places around one college.
To an extent, we did use the convention of having limited locations as
everything was filmed within the college. However we could also say that
we slightly challenged this code and convention as we did film in various
places around the college, instead of sticking to one specific location such
as a classroom. However this was necessary as the short film does involve
William trying to escape Mohammed but he is constantly appearing
everywhere.
6. Conflict and Simplicity
• These two codes and conventions can come together when
we look at our short film. Firstly, the whole idea is simple,
which is that William owes Mohammed some money and that
he is going to follow him everywhere until he gets it back. This
also links with the conflict as William is constantly being
followed and bothered by Mohammed, constantly telling him
to “go away” and “leave him alone”.
7. Challenges The Audience
• Once again we also use this convention, especially at the end
of the short film. In the end, William’s character thinks he’s
going home but once again gets caught by Mohammed as it
suddenly cuts off just before he reaches William. This cliff
hanger is a perfect way to challenge the audience as they can
now use their imagination to finish the story themselves,
allowing the short film to also seem like a ‘small sample from
a feature film’.
