In the website future-of-working: Helping People Get the Most Out of Their Career & Workplace (2015) talks about Referent Power In The Workplace. This is mostly achieved by the Manager/Supervisor giving the employee the responsibility of completing a needed project on their own with little to no supervision. They could gain Referent Power by giving workers more responsibilities and opportunities as the result of completing their tasks competently. Workers that are given this responsibility tend to be more devoted to the company’s goals. Using ones likeness to gain the admiration of the workers is a great form of power without being forceful or intimidating (Randall, D. M., pg33, 2012). With Referent Power being observed by most employees as this person is who we need to impress or get to know because of their position in the company, it would be safe to say most leaders or managers who use their Referent Power are not going to use it in a negative way. There are a few that do and when this power is used to manipulate employees negatively or the results of the product or service turn negative it can have a devastating effect on the entire companies worth. This could last for months or even years and could cause some companies to close as well as effect every employee financially, emotionally, or both. For the most part Referent Power is used in a positive way, most CEO’s don’t want to loose their jobs any more than the regular employees do.
