System Platforms for the R/3 System The R/3 System is fully compatible with all important UNIX platforms and Windows NT (Microsoft) as well as with AS/400 and S/390 (IBM) You can also use database systems such as Informix Online, Oracle 7, ADABAS D from Software AG, IBM's DB2/6000 and Microsoft's SQL Server 6.0. The graphical user interface of the R/3 System (SAPGUI) is also compatible with desktop systems such as OS/2 PM, OSF/Motif, Macintosh and Windows.
System Landscpe Assuming 400 concurrent users, A three system landscape architecture is recommended, which includes development, test, and production system. Hardware Requirement The minimum requirement of a R/3 system is 256MB RAM, 20GB HD, and 3*RAM+500MB Swap space. For 400 users, it might require at least 3CPU, 3GB RAM, and 50GB Disk space. Detail sizing should be proposed by hardware vendor, while SAP will help customer to verify the result. Besides, please take SAP benchmark document as reference. If customer would like to use WebGUI, an ITS server is required, which is simply a NT server with 128MB RAM and Pentium 200 MHz CPU.

Customizing Tool: IMG Customizing: Maintaining tables Implementation Guide (IMG) The IMG acts as a checklist of the Customizing activities that your enterprise should complete for an R/3 implementation project. The IMG is hierarchically structured . The structure of the IMG and the IMG management tools (like resource management and the MS Project interface) help your project team to work through the Customizing activities in a rational sequence The Enterprise IMG contains all Customizing activities you need to implement application components in an enterprise You can open Customizing transactions from the Enterprise IMG or from the SAP Reference IMG You can create R/3 Customizing projects to help structure and manage the implementation work. With the Computing Center Management System (CCMS) you can monitor, control and configure an R/3 System. You can use the tools provided to analyze system load and determine the resource consumption by the various system components. The CCMS provides you with a series of graphical monitors and administration functions: Starting and stopping the R/3 Systems R/3 System monitoring and analysis Automatic reporting of system alerts Dynamic user distribution R/3 System configuration: Editing system profiles (not authorization profiles) Processing and controlling background jobs, scheduling database backups.
A new system monitoring structure is available from Release 4.0 using Transaction RZ20. This new structure allows centralized monitoring of many system parameters and includes the following: Links to existing analyses Open interfaces that can be used to incorporate other system monitoring tools (including non-SAP tools). Allows monitoring of other R/3 Systems provided an RFC connection with the other system is possible and configured. It is also possible to define your own monitors in the new infrastructure. These can be used to provide specific people with only those alerts they are interested in. All threshold values can be maintained using simple Customizing settings. These can be valid either for one monitoring attribute or for an entire class of monitoring attributes. How full are various directories on the operating system level is an example of a typical monitoring attribute. You can define the alert condition for a specific directory using an individual threshold value or the threshold value of the "percentage_used" group (for example, change from green to yellow when 95% full)
EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange and describes the electronic exchange of structured business data between different applications. EDI architecture consists of: EDI-enabled applications: They allow business transactions to be processed automatically. The IDOC interface: This was conceived as an open interface and consists of the intermediate documents and the corresponding function modules. The EDI subsystem: This converts the intermediate documents into EDI messages and inverse. SAP does not supply this element of the EDI architecture. The main component of the IDoc interface is the IDoc type. An IDoc is an SAP standard that specifies the structure and format of the data to be transferred electronically. It was developed with the standards EDIFACT and ANSI X12 in mind. IDocs are identified uniquely using a control record. The data records form the centerpiece of the application. The status records log the status of an IDoc on its way from the application to the trading partner and vice versa.

The ITS consists of the WGate (W = Web) and the AGate (A = application). The WGate communicates with the HTTP server, and the AGate communicates with the R/3 application server. A Service the Internet Transaction Server provides for Internet users consists of: Administering logon information to the R/3 System (name of system, user details) Running a transaction in R/3 or calling a function module or report Converting R/3 data (screens or lists) to HTML pages
The Internet Transaction Server (ITS) links one or more HTTP servers with one or more R/3 Systems. Internet and Intranet users can run Web-enabled transactions, Web-enabled function modules, or any ABAP reports in R/3 using the ITS. Windows NT Server 4.0 (Intel), the HTTP server and ITS can be installed only on one computer. HTTP server software supported is Microsoft Internet Information Server and Netscape Enterprise Server. ITS server contains WGate and Agate. If the WGate and the AGate are to be installed on two different computers, note the following requirements: The AGate requires a Windows NT 4.0 Server (Intel) The WGate must be installed on the same computer as the HTTP server. UNIX operating systems can also be used instead of Windows NT 4.0 (all SAP-supported derivatives).
