Many people are now spending less because they feel as though they do not have the money to spend on anything other than necessities. In some cases, this new behaviour has been a positive change as some people have been able to spend more time on their self-care practices such as exercise and healthy eating - both of which have been shown to help reduce stress levels. On the other hand, some people have started overspending as a way to cope with their increased feelings of isolation and loneliness that come from being stuck at home for long periods of time without human contact. The pandemic has had a major impact on consumer behaviour and their purchasing choices. (Güngördü Belbağ, 2021)
