FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UWP CALLS ON PRIME MINISTER DR. KENNY ANTHONY TO CLEAR THE AIR ON
PETROCARIBE
CASTRIES, Saint Lucia – Wednesday, November 20, 2013 – The United Workers Party
(UWP) has observed, with much concern, the recent changes taking place with PetroCaribe.
News came earlier this month that Guatemala is pulling out of the Petrocaribe deal because it
said it was offered new repayment terms it thinks was unpalatable.
The United Workers Party fears that the Venezuelan Government may push up interest rates and
modify repayment terms for Saint Lucia.
The Party is therefore calling on Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony to explain to the nation the
details of the deal made with PetroCaribe and ALBA; and has the interest rate on PetroCaribe
loans raised to 4 per cent with more of the bill to be paid up front?
Saint Lucians must also be told what the terms and conditions are for a grant which was provided
by ALBA. Was the grant the outcome of a deal made with ALBA for votes at the United Nation?
Were the monies deposited in the Consolidated Fund? Which company has been awarded the
contract to build the bridges announced by the Prime Minister?
The UWP questions the judgment of the Dr. Kenny Anthony Administration to hold out such
high expectation from a country that is clearly struggling to survive.
