Retro fashion Looks - InfoBarrel
1. Retro fashion Looks - InfoBarrel
Finding your fashion style can be difficult, as you have to think about how you want to express your
personality and what makes you feel fabulous and yet comfortable. Retro fashion is well worth
considering when thinking about creating your own distinctive fashion style, as such looks can lend
an aura of sophistication, fun, or evoke certain interesting historical time periods.
The first thing you need to think about however, is what kind of clothes do you like to wear? and
where are the places you like to go? If you fancy a night out at the pub and are often found in
comfortable flat shoes and sports outfits, then it's probably not the best move to consider a style
which encompasses sky scraping, high heels and pencil skirts.
So what are some retro fashion ideas to consider?
Victorian Mourning Fashion
"We have long passed the Victorian Era when asterisks were followed after a certain interval by a
baby."
W. Somerset Maugham
The mourning fashion of the Victorian era, is very distinctive and a famous part of this time period.
This era is named for Queen Victoria, who dominated this time as the British figurehead; she also
spent forty years of her reign in mourning clothes, after the death of her husband Albert. Although
mourning clothes were generally black during the first period of mourning, there were many ways
2. for Victorian women to show their style and wealth, with matching gloves, purses, hats and
umbrellas.

Â
Victorian mourning style fashion is still a look on the fashion radar today, with many modern
interpretations of Victorian fashion elements available. Rich colours and luxurious fabrics can be
used instead of black and there are many different kinds of corsets and accessories to choose from.

4. The Hepburn Look
British actress Audrey Hepburn created her own distinctive signature style, which has become as
legendary as her films. In the film ' Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Hepburn wore what has become an
"iconic" black dress and she has also become known for her sophisticated elegance and genteel
style. Dressed by some of the best designers, like Givenchy and Valentino, the Hepburn look is
highly influential, inspirational and copied. If graceful, glamour is your look, then the Audrey
Hepburn style is for you.
Pin-up girl Style
"I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to
handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."
 Marilyn Monroe
5. The pin-up girl look refers to the style that was commonly used in posters of women, mostly in the
1940s-50s. As a seductive, fantasy style, the pin-up look is not for the shy and retiring type. If your
personality is sassy and strong and you can handle the panting males and harpoon eyes of other
women, then this look is for you.
As the clothing of this style is mostly fitted or revealing, it is most suitable for those with hour-glass
figures, although clever fashion tricks can always create the illusion of this figure type. The talented
and beautiful Marilyn Monroe, first came into the public eye as a pin-up model and once she got
everyone's attention, she continued to collect hearts, fans and imitators.
Hippie
"Elvis was the only man from Northeast Mississippi who could shake his hips and still be loved by
rednecks, cops, and hippies."
Jimmy Buffett
There was lots of great things about the 1960s and in many ways the hippies were one of them.
Hippies sought to free themselves of many of the straight-laced and conservative values of the past,
they were interested in life's meaning and represented nonviolence, altruism and respect for
individual rights. Hippies expressed their values in their flowing, often brightly colored clothing,
6. they favoured tie-dye patterns and bell bottom pants. Hippies made thrift shopping mainstream and
headbands, scarves and necklaces of beads must have items. And hippies gave us Woodstock, free
love and wonderful psychedelic music.
If you are the counter-culture, bohemian type, who cares about the equal rights of others, then
perhaps the hippie style is the right fashion expression for you.
