5. BIG is powerful. Kids love BIG. They want to be BIG. They want to do
BIG. They love enormous numbers like a hundred million billion and
long words like “tyrannosaurus rex.” They love humongous rockets
that can blast to the moon. They love to spread their arms wide and
run as fast as they can across a huge field. Thinking BIG, Learning BIG is
filled with BIG activities to engage the imaginations of young children.
Children learn best by seeing, feeling, and doing. Making things on a grand
scale enhances their understanding. When they build a giant spider with eight
legs and eight eyes, and a giant fly with six legs and two eyes and two wings,
children can see they are quite different, not just “bugs.” Creating BIG experi-
ences makes them more fun, more memorable, and, therefore, more educational.
Organized by topic, the activities build science, math, and language skills, which form
the foundation of upper-level skills. The information and activities align with the standards
set by the National Science Teachers Association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the
International Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English. The BIG Connec-
tions section presents ways to integrate the topic throughout the curriculum—in sensory experiences, art,
music, dramatic play, and gross motor skills.
Thinking BIG, Learning BIG offers BIG fun and BIG learning!

Claire Lerner
This video provides su-
pervisors, trainers, and
directors with non-nar-
rated footage of real-life
interactions between
staff and families. Fol-
lowing each vignette, discussions between
national experts serves as a catalyst to help
viewers hone their own observation skills
and encourage reflection on how their own
work relates to what they are seeing in the
video. This DVD helps staff appreciate the
importance and complexity of staff-parent
relationships in promoting a child's healthy

FromMySide
Sylvia C. Chard and Yvonne Kogan
This beautiful book, filled with hundreds of
color photographs from many different
countries, invites us to look through a
window into the lives of children everywhere.
Children are never still. They are always
acting and reacting, thinking and speaking, anticipating and reflecting. The
photographs in this book illustrate and explore the experience of children, who learn to
make sense of their world by interacting with people, places, and objects they encounter
in their homes, in public places, in schools, and in daycare centers. We hear the laughter
of children dressed for a festival dance, the coos and gurgles of infants in their mothers’
arms, and squeals of delight as children skip rocks in a stream. The authors have
provided captions and brief essays to expand on their photographs when needed, but
often the pictures speak for themselves.
You will come away from this book changed. The compelling story of childhood, told
here from the child’s point of view, will enrich and inspire your work for and with
children. 128 pages. 2008.

Polly Neill
Wondering how to "do science" with
preschoolers? This latest volume in
the Teacher's Idea Book series shows
you how authentic, hands-on science
learning takes place every day
throughout the classroom as well as
outdoors. You'll learn to recognize
and support the following six behaviors of the preschool scientific
method that can be found in children's everyday play:
• observing
• classifying
• experimenting
• predicting
• drawing conclusions
• communicating ideas
These six behaviors lay the groundwork for developing children’s understanding of sci-
ence in the future.
Introductory chapters provide an overview of early science learning and supportive
adult-child interactions. The remaining chapters take you on a tour of classroom interest
areas to recognize existing science learning in the classroom and outdoors, and to con-
sider strategies and materials that encourage children's ideas. The chapters include infor-
mation on creating science-related group-time activities based on children's interests and
templates for developing your own group-time activities. 170 pages. 2008.
