Referencing is an important part of university life. It is a skill that you will use for almost every assignment, and is often worth a significant percentage of your marks. Learn how to master the art of referencing in the APA/Harvard style so you can achieve great results in the referencing criteria in your assignment. The phrase ‘practise makes perfect’ may bring up many memories from your childhood. Whether it was tying your shoe or riding a bike, this principle applied to most situations growing up. At university, it is still very important to practise your skills regularly so that you can do well in the referencing criteria of your assessment. The following tips will help you master the art of referencing books, journal articles and websites with Harvard AGPS. Practise makes perfect! Step 1: Collect Firstly, collect all of the information you need to complete your references. It is easier to do this as you research than leaving it until the last minute to avoid missing important details. Books »» Author »» Year of publication »» Book title »» Publisher »» Place of publication Journal articles »» Author »» Year of publication »» Article title »» Journal title »» Volume number »» Issue number »» Page numbers Websites »» Author, editor or compiler »» Year of the most recent version »» Title of work »» Version number (if applicable) »» Description of document (if applicable) »» Name and place of the sponsor of the source »» Day, month and year that you viewed the website »» Website URL Step 2: Order and format The next step is to order your information. Remember to double check that you have included punctuation in the correct places and spelled everything right, as well as whether you formatted your references using capital letters, italics and quotation marks in the appropriate places. Practise makes perfect! Books Print Author, A. A. year of publication, book title, publisher, place of publication. Online Author, A. A. year of publication, book title, publisher, place of publication, day month year that you viewed the book, <URL>. Journal articles Print Author, A. A. year of publication, ‘article title’, journal title, volume number, issue number, page number. Online Author, A. A. year of publication, ‘article title’, journal title, volume number, issue number, page number, Day Month Year that you viewed the article, <URL>. Websites Author, A. A. or compiler Year of the most recent version, Title, version number (if applicable), description of document (if applicable), name and place of the sponsor of the source, viewed Day Month Year, <URL>. However, there are many exceptions to these rules. For example: »» if you have more than a certain amount of authors or no author »» if you have no publication date or date of most recent version »» if you’re using an online image »» if you’re using an online dataset and many more. For online books and journal articles, also remember to collect the day, month and year when you viewed the information, and the URL.
