4. VALUES
• Values are something we qualify as good,
and are prepared to set as goals in life. The
Sanskrit word for value, Ishta, means “the
object of liking”.
• The word ‘Value’ originates from the Latin
word ‘Valerie” . The term ‘value’ is defined
as “that which is desired”.

• Human Values/ Ethics are the fundamental principles and
standards developed by the society which we consider as a
reference to evaluate our action and decisions in our life.
• Values are additive and we go on adding values in life.
• Values can be both positive and negative. Adding one negative
value may cancel out your two positive values. One must be able
to distinguish between good and bad values.
• Development of values is not a single day process. It is a process
which starts from the birth of Man individual and continues till
the last breath.
6. Difference between Human Values and
Moral Values
• Moral values regard matters of right and wrong whereas human
values help a person distinguish between right and wrong.
• Moral values are constant and unchanging whereas human
values change from person to person and from time to time.
• Moral values are related to self development and self discipline
where as human values are about how we treat others in
society.
• Moral values can be taught whereas human values are
inherited values and are intact in all of us.
7. Value Education
• Value means importance and education means knowledge,
therefore Value Education means the knowledge of something
that is important for human beings.
• Values are the ideas, beliefs and norms that a society holds.
8. Why do we need Value Education?

• Education does not simply mean acquiring facts and
information, but also use that knowledge within the right
framework of ethics and values.
• Education is for a Holistic Life and not for a mere living.
• Education needs to be enriched with values and not only
stuffed with facts and information.

12. Basic guidelines for Value Education
• The following points need to be considered:
• Universal: Value education is universal which implies that it is
applicable to every individual for all times and space.
• Secular: It is not dependent on any caste, creed or religion and
section.
• Rational: Value education should be in accordance with human
reasoning.
• Natural: Value education course should be accepted naturally.

nature. It should not be mere theory based on
assumption.
• All encompassing: It should include all the levels of
human existence like individual, family, society and
nature.
• Harmony: The aim is to promote harmony at all level
namely: Individual, Family, Nature and Society.
