The Republic of Moldova territory includes three natural zones: forest, forest-steppe and steppe. It represents a component part of the Eastern European plain and it is situated in the proportion of 90% between the rivers Nistru and Prut.
Mountains and plateaus are totally missing, the physical aspect is flat with only hills and plains of a height mean of 147 m. above sea level. The maximum height (429.5 m.) is in the central part of the Republic of Moldova Plain or Balti's Steppe and South Moldova Plain or Budjeag's Steppe and fluvial terraces practically free of erosion and with the most fertile soil. Here are located the largest Republic's orchards. The area occupied by the forest are about 332500 ha, that made up only 9,8 % of totality of land cover of the territory.
The total length of all rivers is 16000 km, the density of the river network is 0,25 km/sq. There are about 3500 of artificial reservoirs, 80 of them with the efficient volume more than 1 mill cu m.
A high ratio of the population lives in the rural area. The urban population represents 45%

Moldova is populated by different ethnic groups. A breakdown of major ethnic groups is as follows: Moldovians-76.1%, Ukrainians-8.4%, Russians-5.8%, Gagauz -4.4%, Romanians -2.1, Bulgarians -1.9%, others-1.3 % Christianity is the predominant religion in Moldova. Nearly half of the population belongs to the Eastern Orthodox Church, which incorporates almost 98.5%. They dispose of 1034 churches, 36 monasteries and 7 hermitages with approximately 5000 priests, deacons, curates, etc. The religious personnel is mainly trained within the Chisinau Theological Academy, Theological Seminary, the Spiritual Lyceum for girls, the Spiritual Lyceum for boys. The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova guarantees the religious freedom of its citizens (art. 31). Each citizen has the right to share any religion, individually or in group, to spread this faith, to exercise their cult either in a private or public, as long as it does not contradict the Constitution and the law in force.
Total employed persons -1.415.200,00 in 2003. Employment is low and job opportunities are scarce. 25% of working age moldovans are employed abroad.
