Attraction Vs. Love In The Book Of Ruth
One inevitable area in life that we all crave and want is some sort of love and attraction. According
to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, attraction is feelings that an individual, whether that is
romantically or sexually, in another person. Society today typically sees attraction as strictly
physical more so than common similarities between the two. Although physical attraction is
important in a relationship, that is not all. The book of Ruth shows that there is more to love and
attraction then just good looks. In the book of Ruth, focusing on the "right man" or "right woman" is
discovering the attraction and love that is formed within relationships. In the book of Ruth it focuses
on love, attraction, and faithfulness.
Throughout the book of Ruth, we hear about her quest to find the "right man" that suits her. Ruth
searching for the right man shows us to what extent God will help fulfill her wants and needs in a
relationship. Now, for a little background, Ruth had married Naomi's son, Mahlon, making Naomi
her mother–in–law. Mahlon and Ruth had been married for 10 years before he went against the word
of the Lord and died. Naomi and Ruth were widowers, which forced Ruth to get a job as a gleaner
due to the fact that they were bankrupt and needed their basic needs met, ... Show more content on

According to Wood (2014), the attraction phase involves much more than just being physically
attracted to one another. Other attractions include: values, skills, abilities, talents, and ambitions.
Wood states that attraction is not all kissing, touching, and burning passion for one another, but
claims that those behaviors are more of a sense of lust that a majority of the population cares about
looks before similarity. However, as stated earlier, Boaz noticed Ruth and thought she was the most
beautiful woman he had ever seen. We are all about the superficial outlook, which is how attraction

Analysis Of Gleaners 's Food Bank Of Indiana Inc.
Gleaners uses essentially every social media platform to reach volunteers and donors. By just simply
going on Gleaners' website, one can see a link to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and
YouTube, all of which use the same handles to ensure easy access: @GleanersFBIndy or Gleaner's
Food Bank of Indiana. Gleaners' Facebook account has by far the most interactions topping out at
just over 9,500 likes. Gleaners uses its Facebook primarily to post pictures of volunteers at its
headquarters and at different events being held (Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana Inc.). Twitter is their
second most followed platform with a total of 3,900 followers (@GleanersFBIndy). The Twitter
account has a slightly different feel than the Facebook account because it focuses more on talking to
followers and thanking different people and organizations that volunteer with Gleaners. Instagram
has a very similar feel as Twitter, in the sense that the posts are almost identical. Instagram,
however, only has around 800 followers, which is surprising considering the presence on Twitter
and Facebook (@gleanersfbindy). Gleaners also has accounts on Linked In, Pinterest, and YouTube,
but its presence is very minimal and the posts are very infrequent. Overall, Gleaner's has a presence
in the social media world that is still growing but is becoming very successful.
Expanding Its Presence and Voice
Gleaners is currently in the process of improving their social media communication methods.

Pissarro
By 1880 the Impressionist idiom had been fully developed and Pissarro, in his constant quest for
new forms of discipline and inspiration, turned his attention to drawing. The present work is an
iconic example from the artist's most prolific decade of graphic output; from 1880 to 1890 he would
produce nearly three–quarters of his graphic oeuvre, using his drawings as a tool to explore form
and line while incorporating Neo–Impressionist techniques into his painted work.
Les Glaneuses (The Gleaners) is a compendium of Pissarro's treatment of pastoral life, relating
directly to the seminal painting of the same name (1887–1889). While the painted work is Neo–
Impressionist in its treatment of tone, its texture is made up of a discrete series of dots, dashes and
commas, anticipating that Pissarro would soon abandon the common aesthetic doctrine outlined by
Seurat and Signac (see fig. 1). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pissarro was so enamored of the gleaners as a subject that from 1887–1889 he created eight known
studies in various states of completion as he visually meditated on the composition: hurried croquis
sketches produced en plein air, preparatory studies, and, in the case of the present work, fully
realized presentation drawings executed in a combination of media. According to Richard Thomson,
the present work, long believed to have been lost, "may either have served as a study for the
painting, or as an independent, even later, variant" in the genesis of Les Glaneuses (R. Thomson,

Judith Murray: Sound Feminist?
Judith Murray: Sound Feminist?
"History repeats itself," a common phrase often spoken but rarely explained in detail, bears more
truth than most realize. For instance, similar societal issues persist in various populations throughout
history. The issues that encompass America today date back to earlier times, whether the problem
concerns religion, race, or gender. Discrimination towards an individual on the subject of gender can
be traced to biblical times, with women being those discriminated against. Women constantly feel
the oppression and weight of male supremacy, particularly the women of Colonial America. These
women carry the burden of harsh expectations, yet they begin to pave the way for future feminists.

"But, suffer me to ask, in what the minds of females are so notoriously deficient, or unequal," writes
Murray with an acerbic wit in the prosaic section of "On the Equality of the Sexes" (Murray,
Equality of the Sexes, 132). This first essay written by Murray begins with an extensive poem
highlighting the separation of men and women for unsound reasons. In the poem, Murray
acknowledges that no two minds think the same, but also notes that women as a whole are viewed as
the weaker, lesser sex. Women, as the inferior sex in this time period, must submit themselves
completely to their husbands or fathers. Although some Colonial Americans do not view females as
lesser beings, "imbecility is still confin'd, And by the lordly sex to us consign'd" (Murray, Equality
of the Sexes, 132). Women cannot stop the misogyny against their gender due to society's twisted
views. Following the poetic section of the essay, Murray expresses her reasoning in prose. Based on
her commentary, the commonplace perception of women as humans with naturally inferior brain
capacities does not occur to Murray; in fact, she claims "their minds are by nature equal" (Murray,
Equality of the Sexes, 133). Even though society shows little respect for women's rights, Murray
never once shows the slightest implication of sharing these misogynistic views with the world. The

Courbet's Burial At Ornans Andean-Gleaners
A Formal Analysis of Gustave Courbet's Burial at Ornans and Jean–François Millet's Gleaners
The realism era came about during the time of the Romantics, the time where imagination and
ideology painted the artists canvas. To be a realist meant that an artist would paint what he actually
saw and not an idea of something. For instance, if an artist were to paint a depiction of war, then all
the gruesome details would probably be considered in the piece of art. The artist that essentially
paved the way out of Romanticism and into the era of Realism was Gustave Courbet considered by
some to be the first realist.
Gustave Courbet was born in region of France called Franche–Comté in 1819. Courbet was the
oldest child in the family and he had three sisters that he was very close with, although the older he
got the more he rebelled against his parent's wishes for him to become a lawyer; Gustave wanted to
be an artist, so he eventually did break from the ideals of his parents and instead set out on his own
path. Gustave was known as a rebel and in his unconventional way changed the way art was viewed.
Gustave said of himself, "I offend, therefore I am." He had a strong disdain for the government and
this proved to be an asset in who he would one day become. Gustave, with his rebellion of the
traditional style of artistry, observed the works of others and ... Show more content on

The artist came from humble beginnings of a hard working family. One day Millet drew a perfect
picture on his wall and caused his father to see the gift that his son had, so at the urging of his father
Millet went away to study to become an artist. Millet, much like Courbet, desired a break from the
conventional artistic styles of the past, so around 1849 he rented a cottage where he realized that he
loved the views of the country side and peasant life. His observations led him to begin drawing and
painting landscapes and a realistic approach to peasant

Differences And Similarities Between John Deere And Gleaner
How a Combine Works Modern combines are a complex machine that indefinitely increase the
productivity of farmers. Combines consists of hundreds of parts that move together to meet the goal
of harvesting grains efficiently and in a timely manor. Without combines the world would not be
able to sustain the current population. The process that the grain crop takes to move from the head of
a combine to the end of the unloading auger is an impressive task. There are two main differences in
modern combines, axial–flow, and natural flow. Both types have many similarities, however there
are a few big differences. There are many different brands of combines including John Deere,
Gleaner, Case, and New Holland. Gleaner is the only natural flow type of combine in this list while
the others are axial–flow. The combine's processing of grain begins at the head. The header is an
independent implement that is removable from a combine, and headers are specialized for different
crops. All headers are powered by the main drive of the combine but some parts of a header like a
reel, might be hydraulically powered. Row crop headers have points at the very front of them that
can separate fallen rows of crops and that help operators follow the rows. Row crop headers have

Essay on The Visual Analysis of The Gleaners
The Gleaners (Des glaneuses) is an oil painting, 83.8 cm × 111.8 cm (33 in × 44 in), created by
French realist painter Jean–Francois Millet in 1857. The piece of oil painting vividly depicts the
nineteenth–century French rural life, with a rich flavor of harvest.
Jean–Francois Millet arranges the farm as the main scene of background, and aims at three women
gleaners being bent to pick up ears of wheat. Through the observation of the painting, we can see
three peasant women occupy in the center of the screen, each bending with different angles, while
their eyes all raking down to the ground. To contrast with the distant crowd, they wear coarse
clothes and clunky wooden shoes, having robust statures. It is not appropriate to say that they ...

As some parts of background are closer to the light source than the front, they are applied with
brighter hues, high in value. In addition, Millet places things like haystack, trees and farmhouse in
the back, and peasant women in the front. Hence. On the basis the positions of objects, the principle
of line perspective, and the relative distance to the viewer, three gleaners visually appear within a
larger proportion on the painting. In other words, the front figures' sizes are bigger than the back
objects'. Further more, in the painting, "the Gleaners", the entire screen is filled with contrast
elements. First of all, the main figures in the front labor scene are full of rich vigor, contrasting to
the background with silent objects such as hay, trees and farmhouse. Secondly, the color brightness
of the front contrast to the back, as well as the comparison of relative sizes between figures and
scenery, applying the principle of perspective. What's more, the most classic is the horizontal line,
the intersection of the sky and the ground, contrasting with the light source, from the top left.
Consequently, 2D and 3D spatial effects are combined precisely. Meanwhile, the sense of space of
the image is strengthened as well.
For this oil painting on canvas, the painter Jean–Francois Millet did use concise expression means,
instead of complex techniques. Hence,

Judith Murray The Gleaner
Judith Murray's "The Gleaner" is a collection of writings, in which she addressed crucial
philosophical, social, and political issues while incorporating her reflection on the culture pertaining
to the new nation, part of which she had become (Nash, 2005).
The writings address the rights and roles of women in the society while underlining their equality to
their male counterparts (Nash, 2005).
Margaretta stories are the important aspect of these writings, which provide a portrait of an
adaptable and intelligent female protagonist, meanwhile, creating the type of development and
education that was valuable for women (Nash, 2005).
Furthermore, she illustrates the Republican Motherhood ideal.
Part of that ideal was the perception that women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She challenges the restriction of women to domestic roles and states that men and women are only
different biologically but not intellectually (Murray, 2012).
The work's particular angle and writer's style comprises of the following key points:
"The Gleaner" was a column incorporated in the Massachusetts Magazine, where Murray assumed a
male identity;
The Gleaner utilized letters and female interactions to outline the tragic story of a woman who was
seduced and abandoned by an ignominious man;
The adoption of a male persona, however, does not imply ceding territory to men;
Instead, she was separating print discourse from the easily assignable gender via successive
convolutions.
Judith Sargent Murray was an American writer in the course of the early republic.
Born to a wealthy merchant and ship owner, Murray got an exceptionally good education for a
woman of her time (Hurd–Smith, 1998).
Her, being a woman, hindered her from acquiring much education despite her intellectual
capabilities.
In this essence, Murray's parents hired her brother's tutor for her in Harvard to enhance her
education.

The food service organization I chose for my paper was Gleaners. Gleaners' mission is "to lead the
fight against hunger." This organization was founded in 1980. They work to fight hunger by
collecting, storing, and distributing food to those who need it most. Gleaners distributes their food to
over 230 agencies. Food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters all receive items from Gleaners.
Gleaners is also affiliated with Feeding America, a nationwide network that has 200 food banks and
60,000 food pantries and meal programs. The reason I chose this organization is because I have
volunteered there and it had a big impact on me. They work hard to overcome issues associated with

Food Deserts: A Case Study
Food deserts are one of the biggest problems in society, as the authors of Food Justice bring up
(Gottlieb & Joshi, 2013). In fact, Indianapolis is ranked worst in the nation for food deserts. So what
is a food desert? A food desert is when places are left with the lack of availability of nutritious foods
and high rates of poverty. Often times, these are known as grocery gaps because grocery stores
move out of the area, normally located in low–income communities. It makes sense that they would
move to make more profit, but it leaves those in the community left with essentially nothing. Also,
most people living in a low–income community do not have access to transportation, so they cannot
get to grocery stores that are outside of walking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One in six people in central and southeast Indiana has food insecurity. Most of these people are
children and senior citizens. Often times, people fall into the gap where they struggle to afford food,
but make too much money to be put on SNAP or free and reduced lunches for children ("About
Gleaners", 2017). More than half of the people they serve all have to make choices when it comes to
eating. They can either not pay for transportation, healthcare, medicine, utilities or housing, or pay
for food. "Employment instability and the lack of an adequate minimum wage" are responsible for
people having to choose between these ("Q & A: The Causes Behind Hunger in America", 2017).
Without money to pay for things like transportation and food, people are left hungry. Gleaners
works to fight hunger by collecting, storing and distributing food to those who need it most. Having
food takes the stress off of others so they can buy other things they need and do not have to choose.
Gleaners has many different options to distribute food to individuals. They distribute their food to
over 230 agencies, including food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters ("About Gleaners",

Low Income Families Dealing With Hunger As My Population...
Low income families are struggling every day not only to pay their bills but to put food on the table
for their families. There are many obstacles that prevent parents from being able to provide meals
for their family and that is because they are either running a household alone, have a low income, or
cannot find a job. "Hunger was associated strongly with unemployment, part–time employment for
economic reasons (i.e., because more work could not be found), not working because of a disability,
recent household moves, and low education"(Tapogna 2004). With no source of income parents
struggle to feed their children. Hunger does not only affect the parents but the children as well it can
affect their academic success, social life, and cause them to have food insecurities. I believe this is a
common topic that is affecting families all over the world, which is why I chose low income
families dealing with hunger as my population choice. (Background information about your target
population) My hypothesis was that most families are more likely to face hunger because there is
only one parent working and managing to pay bills. My research indicated that single parent
households (specifically single mothers) are more likely to face the effects of hunger. One study
found that the odds of hunger are affected by resource constraints in low–income female–headed
families (Wehler 2004). I wanted to learn more about how and why hunger affects families; I

marry her seducer instead of dying as a fallen woman, which was important because it demonstrated
a redefining of female roles from complete dependence on man to one where a woman could be

"But grant, the prayer of my petition," shows how Mrs. Wellwood is using her rational capacities to

Stone Breakers And The Stone Breakers
The mid 1800's in France was truly a period for challenging arising issues in the midst a great
change. Gustave Courbet's The Stone Breakers and–Jean Francois Millet's The Gleaners, are two
paintings that use the style of realism to convey a unique perspective of the reality around them.
(subjects, brush stroke, background)
The Stone Breakers is a painting that was created in the year 1849, by French artist Gustave
Courbet. This painting has the dimensions of 165 x 257 cm, and was done with the medium oil on
canvas. Upon first glance, a viewer can see this work as two males doing that remove and break
stone from a road that is being built. However, the painting's connotative meaning shows a man that
appears to be too old and a boy that appears to be too young for such harsh labour. Courbet had
made this decision with the intention of sharing his perspective on the reality of the abuse and
deprivation that had occurred in French rural life during that time period. Courbet's intentions are
significant because they display a truthful perspective while using ordinary people. Courbet
refrained from using subjects of people who are wealthy, and live a more glamourous lifestyle,
which was a norm for many french artists to incorporate in their work. The Stone Breakers is a
painting that challenges the ideologies in society, and provide viewers with a new way of thinking
towards the norms of labour in the society during the time period.

The Shift in Representation of Working Class in Modern Art
Jean–Batiste Simeon Chardin was famous for his still life painting, which depicts the ordinary life in
18th century. As most artists belonged to the Rococo style at that time, in which artists painted about
the luxury life of aristocracy, Chardin chose to go against Rococo and began to paint about the
ordinary life to bring the art to the public viewers. He used still–life painting to show the link
between the motions of the body's repetitious habit and the stable world around the body, instead of
just painting about the body itself. While Rococo style painters painted their subjects with fluffy and

In the 19th century, there were two artists who were famous for their paintings of working class,
Jean–François Millet and Gustave Millet. In Millet's painting The Gleaners, he painted three women
bending over to reach out for left–over grains, which showed the combination of women and
subservience to create a sense of collective harmony. The action of gleaning, when the wealthier
owners have harvested their corps and the poor are entitles to pick up whatever is left over, is a
biblical reference–comes from old testament. Although those women were the lowest–class
individuals of the society, even in the working class, they were put in the right settings and gestures
which suites their working–class identities. Viewers can forget about individual painfulness in favor
of collective harmony by showing the dignity of multiple gleaners moving rhythmically together.
The Gleaners received tremendous popularity of this painting the 19th century. He painted about the
working class to show his sympathy and sentimental approach towards working class, and also to
support his opinion of anti–bourgeois. He allowed viewers to take multiple position in relation to his
work, wither in natural empathic reaction of sympathy for poverty versus monumental dignity of
organized motion, or in dilemma between polite taste and radical opinions. According to the reading
The Absolute Bourgeois by T.J. Clark, the author quoted from Rochery, who compare Millet with
Courbet to show Millet's true love of country: "M.Millet's picture is certainly painted from life, like
M. Courbet's, but one can sense greater spontaneity and depth in the painter's impressions, a truer
love of country life and country people. " In Courbet's painting The Stonebreaker, he painted two

The Gleaners Essay
The Gleaners was painted in 1857 by French painter Jean–Francois Millet, during the Realism
movement. The painting depicts the austere image of three women collecting stray wheat left on the
field after a harvest. Millet, considered the founder of 19th century peasant painting, drew attention
to a contemporary phenomenon, the painstaking but dignified labor of peasants. Flaming June is
quite the opposite of the Gleaners in theme, style and mood. Produced by Victorian artist Sir

In this regard, both paintings depict women differently. In The Gleaners, the women are depicted
realistically in a very austere and dignified manner. The women are in the very down–to–earth
setting of a farming field that Millet illustrates in a golden haze and adds realistic details such as
haystacks, sheaves of wheat, a cart and a busy crowd of harvesters. The peasant women also look
sensible, with their dark skin, patched clothing and hair covered in caps. This reflects the women's
poorness, but also the grittiness of the job they are doing. The women have the same poses of
bending close to the ground, suggesting the lowly, debased position of a peasant. But at the same
time, the women's careful poses and gestures give them a sense of dignity in how they carry
themselves, strong and sure even when they are doing such lowly laber. The way the three figures
dominate the whole space lends them a sense of grandeur; a grandeur that is also enhanced by the
great size of the painting. Millet probably developed the painting in reference to biblical heroine
Ruth, who gleaned the field of Boaz to suggest the modest and virtuous work of the women carrying
out God's will. They are hard at work, productive, absorbed in their labor, not idealized or

Volunteering Habitat For Community Service
Volunteering is a great way to get service hours and to help your community. There are many
opportunities to volunteer in our modern day community. You can volunteer at animal shelters, soup
kitchens, organizations for disabilities, food pantries, and organizations. Some of the organizations
you can volunteer at are Habitat for Humanity, Joseph Maley Foundation, the Humane Society, and
Gleaners Food Bank. There are many other organizations that you can volunteer for, however. I
think that I would like to volunteer at the Joseph Maley Foundation. I have done JMFriends Puppet

that this is a really great organization through their outreach to families ... Show more content on

I know that they build houses to improve housing conditions, and they build them with the help of
the volunteers that they get. I think that this will be an enjoyable project, because you would be
making a very visible difference in your community that will help other people. Habitat for
Humanity has their organization spread throughout the world, in places such as the United States,
Canada, Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The
organization was founded in 1976. The idea for the organization came to the founder in Koinonia
Farm, just outside of Americus, Georgia. Finally, I think that I would like to volunteer at Gleaners
Food Bank. Just like Joseph Maley Foundation, I have volunteered there before. I volunteered at
Gleaners twice, once for HOPE and once for Service Day. Both of the times we filled bags with
food for kids to eat over the weekend, because their families do not have enough money for food. I
think that Gleaners is doing an amazing job of feeding the hungry in our community. They also have
a food pantry program that gives families groceries every week or so. They are making a not so
visible, but rather large impact on our community through their

Gleaners Teamwork
What I liked most about the volunteer work at Gleaners was the result of the work itself. It was
satisfying to hear the supervisor give us the total of 15 tons sorted through. It put a number on the
amount of help we were doing, and it made the work feel even more rewarding to know how much
we accomplished. It also was amazing to hear how, if not for our presence, all of said work would've
fallen on that one supervisor. I cannot fathom how he could manage to do that much work in a
decent amount of time, so it only added to that feeling of doing something good. I also enjoyed the
teamwork in the work itself because it always feels good to be in sync with other people. It gives a
sense of comradery, and in this type of volunteer work it also establishes a base of trust. The team
effort helped for the project to move quicker, and it made it much more enjoyable.
I would have to say what I liked least about the volunteer project was the labor, in and of itself. It
was a lot to manage at once and it was especially difficult considering the weight of many of the
boxes. There were also the many broken packages that made it much more difficult to maneuver the
loads. For example, it was difficult to properly pick up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for how my work at Gleaners will help communities throughout Indiana, it cannot top the personal
work that is at Grace Church. However, I will say that Gleaners gave every other volunteer work
beyond that a run for its money. It was rewarding in its own way and, while it wasn't in the top tier,

The Sower Vs The Gleaners Essay
The two paintings I am going to discuss are The Sower (Top, Right) and The Gleaners (Top, Left)
by Jean–Francois Millet. Both paintings are in the Realist style with The Sower painted in 1849 and
The Gleaners in 1857. The Sower measures at 101 X 80.7cm whereas The Gleaners is 83.5 X
110cm. This essay will look at how these paintings are representative of Realism through their social
and political context and elements of style. The Realist effect of Millet's paintings will be shown in
comparison with another painting of similar time, The Recall of the Gleaners (bottom image) by
Jules Breton (1859). A key aspect of realism is a social agenda within the painting, which both
Millet's paintings evoke. The Gleaners is making a remark at the divide in the rural society. Salon
goers thought he was bringing poverty and dirt to the Salon. The painting shakes the ideologies of
French society. Audiences wanted to believe peasants were happy and comfortable in their lives so
that they would not revolt again. The Gleaners shows realism by depicting the peasants as unhealthy
and by hiding their faces. Making the peasants anonymous shows the suffering of their class and that
rural France was an unequal society. Millet makes a criticism of the Bourgeoisie lifestyle in the
painting. The Sower made Salon goers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Gleaners Millet has used darker and duller colours to be more true to perceptual vision.
Similarly in The Sower the colours used to represent the light of the sun creates a shadow and
vagueness to the face of the figure. This emphasises the idea of the peasant's anonymousness and
their lack of importance in society. These colours also contrast with the idea of sunshine and instead
suggest the impending winter and death. Whereas The Recall uses warmer colours to suggest
everything is beautiful and happy for the peasants to please the audience but is not the peasants

Reflection On Sustainability
As we were learning about the three sectors of sustainability in the beginning of the semester, I
realized how broad sustainability is. I began considering and reaching out to experience the different
aspects of each sector, and quickly discovered how passionate I am about the service sector. I've
always enjoyed and understood the importance of volunteer work in bettering myself and the
community. In turn, for my service learning event, I choose a serving and clean up shift at the
community dinner. I got there a bit early and was able to assist the cooking shift before me. I had no
idea how much I would enjoy it. Meeting the volunteers and student leaders was a great way to
conversate with others about aspects and initiatives on campus relating to sustainability. It was
engaging to be around individuals that shared a common passion. When all the food was finished,
we brought it upstairs and got ready to serve. People began coming up for helpings and it shocked
me how much food we served. Everyone was very grateful, and although I only had a small part in
the food preparation, I had such a strong feeling of contentment and happiness knowing so many
people enjoyed their meal that was destined to be thrown away. When they announced that all the
food had been reclaimed and we were feeding over 100 people, I was flabbergasted. Being aware of
how much food was going to be wasted was an eye–opening moment for me. It lit a fire under me
and make me want to be a bigger part of

must adapt to conditions, and adapt to her audience as they change throughout different economical,
social, and even political times.
Advantages and Disadvantages
This model certainly has its advantages. Working with external marketing companies allows
Gleaners to be more cost–effective and efficient. Rather than employing these sorts of departments

Keeping things professional is a standard expectation for all companies and organizations, and
messages are always reviewed to ensure that no one may take offense to anything that might be said.
There are also guidelines that Gleaners tries to follow, such as sounding as if they are having a
conversation with their audience. They do not want to sound like a large corporation, and try to
avoid large statistics and commands such as "you should." This helps Gleaners have more of a
friendly feel, which is important for an organization that works for the community. They try to use a
relationship tone and like to include the audience as a part of the organization, rather just an outside
customer or donor (Grills 2016).
Internal Content verses External Content
Since Gleaners is such a small company, it allows them to have a strong and straightforward internal
communication process. They do not have to explain commonly known knowledge between
employees because they are used to this type of information. When talking to an external audience,
however, they try to be more informative, and explain their messages with more detail in order to be
effective in the communication process. A great example of this is when Gleaners uses the phrase
"food insecurity." Employees in the company use this

Analysis Of The Film ' Les Glaneurs Et La Glaneuse
Making an impact on their viewers is something documentary directors have always strived for. This
is exactly what Agnès Varda, a French filmmaker often associated with the French New Wave, does
in 2000, at the age of 70, in her first digital film, Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse, a documentary about
gleaning in all its possible different forms. In order to convey her ideas about gleaning in her
documentary Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse, Varda uses both technical tools and thought–provoking
content. This is evident through the way she utilizes her chosen mode of production as the base for
film's design. It is also made clear by the impact this design has on the themes and content. The film
can also be associated with Wasp, a British short directed by Andrea Arnold, because of their
captivating thematic and formal similarities. First of all, Varda's Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse's mode
of production, and more specifically her use of a handheld digital camera and a very reduced film
crew, serves as a foundation for its design–the way it arranges its elements and details. Indeed, for
this film, Varda uses a digital camera for the first time and goes on the road with a small sound and
camera crew. This allows her to be more flexible and capture great, unexpected moments–in a way,
like a gleaner–and also gives off a more casual, gleaning–like feeling. Indeed, Varda's use of a
handheld, digital camera permits her not only to film anything she pleases but also whenever she
pleases. This

Gleaners And Varda
The film The Gleaners and I (2000), by Agnès Varda, is a subtle attempt at bridging the gap between
the past and the present by showing how tradition, necessity, and art have kept certain customs alive.
In this uniquely intimate documentary, Varda sets out to find individuals who still practice the
archaic lifestyle of gleaning, historically done by groups of women after the harvest. On her journey,
Varda meets an array of characters from different backgrounds who all glean for different reasons.
As she weaves these unique stories together, she manages to simultaneously paint a larger, but more
subdued, portrait of herself. This film is like no other documentary that I have ever seen. The
Gleaners and I seems to focus on individuals who scavenge for food out of necessity, the fear of
being wasteful, or just for fun. We are dragged back and forth between the past and the present, with
no final destination in sight. We see homeless people gleaning upwards of fifty pounds of rejected
potatoes from fields picked dry by reapers, too large or too small ... Show more content on

She strays often from her main topic, veering towards something much more personal. Varda
occasionally turns the camera on herself, focusing on her hair and her hands, now worn and
wrinkled with age. She says "My hair and my hands tell me that the end is near," an innocent, yet
haunting line that made my chest tighten with the reminder of the looming threat of mortality.
During these parts of the film, I felt like I was intruding, like I had entered a territory where I did not
belong; I did not feel unwelcome, but I also could not understand. Yes, Varda created this
documentary about gleaners, but the unifying figure is herself, the gleaner. She collects bits and
pieces of the personalities and stories of others through film. Perhaps she is trying to find meaning
in the lives of strangers while being faced with her own

The Burial At Ornans Essay
The Realism movement flourished in the mid–19th Century, beginning after the Revolution of 1848
in France and continuing with the struggle to implement a more democratic system of government.
It was an attempt to reject the idealization of reality in art, instead its aim was to 'give a truthful,
objective and impartial representation of the real world, based on meticulous observation of
contemporary life' . One of the leading figures of the movement, Courbet, stunned his audience with
his Realist painting of The Burial at Ornans (1849–1850; Musée d'Orsay, Paris), which is an oil on
canvas with the large dimensions of 315 x 660 cm. This work, along with Millet's controversial oil
on canvas work The Gleaners (1857; Musée d'Orsay, Paris) – with smaller dimensions of 83.5 x 110

Ornans is relentlessly non–Biblical nor holy; it is a painting completely grounded in the common
folk and their own, quaint traditions. Subverting the status quo in such a manner could be considered
another hallmark of Realism. It politicizes rural life, therefore giving the people who live there a
voice. The group of women at the right seem to almost blend together in a sea of black. This
positioning of the group, who seem to press together, is a nod to realistic group dynamics, which are
messy and disorganized, not sterile and easy to distinguish. The figures are non–idealized, which did
not please critics of the time, as it is said that Courbet's 'monumental display of everyday ugliness
overtaxed critical tolerance' . However, this apparent 'everyday ugliness' is exactly what Realism
aims for. The colour in this work is similar to Millet's in that it is very much done in earthly, muted
tones – those closest to what one would see if they were truly

Julie Otsuka's When The Emperor Was Divine
Julie Otsuka's debut novel "When the Emperor Was Divine" addresses the nature of human
obedience within our society, as well as the compliant attitude of people during times of adversity.
The characters in the novel, rather than protest the injustices shown towards Japanese Americans, let
themselves be perceived as "enemy aliens". They acted submissively and obeyed the government's
orders without question. Even the woman "who did not always follow the rules, followed the rules."
(9) This character had not always done as she was told, yet this time accepted the situation, packing
up the family belongings to leave her home. She wanted, just like the majority of the Japanese
Americans at that time, to show her support to America because she knew that her and her family's

They even started believing the negative stereotypes––lies spread about them that gave their people
a false reputation. They "looked at [themselves] in the mirror and did not like what [they] saw: black

which had always been a part of them, were suddenly being portrayed as "Unknowable.
Inscrutable." (49) However, despite the racism that they had to go through, they still didn't
complain. Submissiveness was a part of their nature, which is portrayed in various symbols
throughout the novel, one of which was The Gleaners painting that the woman took down. It showed
three gleaners bent over, gathering leftovers of harvest in their hands. She decided to throw it away
because "[i]t bothered her, the way those peasants were forever bent over above that endless field of
wheat." (8) The woman saw the gleaners as "forever bent over," (8) which was a sign of
obedience––so very relevant to what was happening at the time. The woman felt that her people
could try for years and years, but because racism was so widespread, they would never be able to fit

Comparative Art: A Progression from Realism to Impressionism
Realism to Impressionism 1 Realism to Impressionism: A Progression The 19th century was a time
of radical change and innovation in nearly every aspect of society. The Industrial Revolution
changed the face of transportation, business, and science. A race for resources and power among
European nations led to colonization of the most remote areas of the world. Old political structures
stumbled while new ones like Communism took root. The arts were not immune to this climate of
change. Literature, music, and fine art all underwent deep shifts in practice and philosophy. One of
the most radical of these shifts occurred in the painting world in late 19th century France. Realism, a
school established in the mid–1800s and committed to portraying the world in the most accurate
detail as possible, gave way to Impressionism, an entirely new artistic philosophy embracing
ambiguity and emotion. This profound change can be seen in the comparison of paintings from each
period; namely, The Gleaners by Realist painter Jean–Francois Millet and Hay Harvest at Eragny by
Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. A comparative analysis of these paintings shows not only the
innovative and reactionary elements of the Impressionist movement, but also how it maintained and
developed important characteristics of Realism. The school of French Realism was established in
mid–19th century France as a response to some important intellectual and philosophical
developments in post–Revolutionary France.

artworks is "Recall of the Gleaners." The underprivileged rural community had the ancient right to
glean, or gather, ears of wheat left by harvesters. At sunset, the gleaners harvested like caryatids (the
women of Caryae in Ancient Greece, sentenced to hard labor for aiding the Persians). It was typical
of the Realist movement to show their subjects in large format, similar to those in historical
paintings. The painting proved successful with critics at the French "Le Salon de 1859," because
they appreciated the naturalistic and poetic vision of the rural world. The interest in the painting,
however, was based on the art itself, not the message. Many of today's critics say that Breton saw
things differently than his fellow Realists, especially Courbet and was more accepted because of it.

Like his father, he too worked the soil and thought highly of those who made their living off the
land. Millet's works changed considerably over his lifetime. Considering his earlier paintings as
frivolous, he finally found his role as an artist after the Revolution of 1848 and from his disdain for
the city of Paris. In the summer of 1849 he went to Barbizon, a little village about one league from
Chailly, on the borders of the Forest of Fontainebleau. He only meant to spend a few weeks there;
but remained for the rest of his life – twenty–seven years. Although his work was at its best during
this period, he was only understood by a few. Much of the public believed he was using artwork of
hard and rough peasants as the "Sower" as revolutionary–to condone socialism and appeal to the
masses. As he grew older, Millet became more secure of his direction. However, with the advent of

Impressionism And Influence In Art In The 19th And 20th...
As art practices evolved during the 19th and 20th centuries, the elite of society became an object of
criticism and obscurity as subject matter, whereas the working class began to appear in artworks in a
more open and positive light. This shift in artworks depicting the working class in favor of
aristocracy is clear in the analysis of three different periods, with the works of three different artists:
Jean–François Millet, Pierre–Auguste Renoir, and Vera Mukhina. Millet depicts the working class
forthright in his works, such as The Gleaners (1857); he focuses on the futility of labor and the
conditions of the emerging middle class in reaction to the extravagance and leisure of the aristocracy
around him. Renoir utilizes an Impressionistic style to depict the working class neighborhood and
surroundings he lives in; in paintings such as Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881), he exposes the
leisurely lifestyle of the working class and their integration into the rest of society. The working
class could now intermix with the aristocracy in a way that had never before been plausible.
Mukhina, however, like other Socialist Realist artists, represents the working class in her sculpture
Worker and Collective Farm Girl (1937) as a powerful and driving force; in the piece, noticeably
absent is any reference to the elite in society. Marking a great departure from earlier representations
of the working class, Mukhina places the worker front and center in a positive light. Together, these

Food Deserts And Food Deserts
Food deserts are one of the biggest problems in society, as the authors of Food Justice bring up
(Gottlieb & Joshi, 2010).
Also,
most people living in a low–income community do not have access to transportation, so they cannot
get to grocery stores that are outside of walking distance. This is why Gleaners, a local food justice
organization, steps in and fills in places where grocery stores have left. The program that works to
fix this is Mobile Pantries. As I will explore later, Mobile Pantries allows people who cannot reach
grocery stores the ability to get nutritious foods they need. Mobile Pantries give people a sense of
going to the grocery store and picking out healthy foods. While consumer choice is limited, as Patel
mentions, Mobile Pantries still gives people healthy options (Patel, 2014). Gleaners is a part of the
Food Justice Movement because while they are not changing consumer choice, they are providing
individuals with the option of healthy foods and working to end hunger and obesity

Gustave Courbet Gleaners
A Formal Analysis of Gustave Courbet's Burial at Ornans and Jean–François Millet's Gleaners
The realism era came about during the time of the Romantics, the time where imagination and
ideology painted the artists canvas. To be a realist meant that an artist would paint what he actually
saw and not an idea of something. For instance, if an artist were to paint a depiction of war, then all
the gruesome details would probably be considered in the piece of art. The artist that essentially
paved the way out of Romanticism and into the era of Realism was Gustave Courbet considered by
some to be the first realist. He dismissed academic painting and insisted that Realist painting was
only what one could actually see. His most famous statement is "I have never seen an angel. Show
me an angel, and I'll paint one."

Millet used an oil medium and centered the subject matter on canvas with dimensions measuring at
around thirty–three inches in height and forty–four inches in width. This piece appears to be
photorealistic because in the center of the work, the three peasant workers come across in an almost
life–like representation of a mundane task. The Gleaners is an excellent depiction of the daily
struggles of the of the lower income class. Paul de Saint–Victor, an essayist and literary critic of the
time bestowed on this work of art to be "The three Fates of pauperism." Millet used the appearance
of a sunset and his use of color seems to illuminate on these women as they work. The color and the
fact that Millet placed the three women so much in the foreground placed emphasis on the work and
the strength that they carry. This painting was displayed in the Salon in 1857 and has had exposure
all over the world. Currently The Gleaners is on conservation at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris,

Jean-Francois Millet: Painting Analysis
Jean–Francois Millet's Potato Planters is a portrayal of two farmers; more likely husband and wife,
planting seeding to grow potatoes during the day on their farm. This art has a lot of emphasis,
movement, color, line, light, and depth. The emphasis behind this piece of artwork is the farmer and
his wife planting the potato seeds. Farmers had to grow everything that they needed to survive.
People don't have to grow what they eat and need to survive like people many years ago needed.
The purpose of the donkey in the background could be because of animals were used to till the fields
before the seeds were planted. There is a very strong meaning behind the painting and shows how
life really was. Basic colors were used to show the difference in people, sky, ground, plants, ... Show

The woman is dropping seeds in the ground and one can see the seeds falling out of her hands into
the hole the farmer dug. Jean– Francois also shows the farmer in a bent way moving the dirt from
the hole for his wife to drop the seeds in the hole. The artist also painted clouds in the sky which
looks like they are supposed to be moving. The whole painting seems to be alive with a lot of
movement occurring. Depth is mostly occurring in the background with the mountains and the field
with going all the way to the mountains. Jean–Francois Millet did an amazing job in showing the
depth in his artwork. By adding the depth in the artwork, the artwork easily become more realistic.
Normally a person can look across a field and can see for miles. That is exactly what Jean–Francois
Millet did when he painted the Potato Planters. Line is used in every artwork ever painted. There are
many lines in the tree, people, and mountain. The mountain has very curvy line just like the tree
does. Lines are also used to separate where the farm ends and where the mountain begins. The lines
also help give depth into the artwork where is separates the mountain and

Attraction Vs. Love In The Book Of Ruth

  • 1. Attraction Vs. Love In The Book Of Ruth One inevitable area in life that we all crave and want is some sort of love and attraction. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, attraction is feelings that an individual, whether that is romantically or sexually, in another person. Society today typically sees attraction as strictly physical more so than common similarities between the two. Although physical attraction is important in a relationship, that is not all. The book of Ruth shows that there is more to love and attraction then just good looks. In the book of Ruth, focusing on the "right man" or "right woman" is discovering the attraction and love that is formed within relationships. In the book of Ruth it focuses on love, attraction, and faithfulness. Throughout the book of Ruth, we hear about her quest to find the "right man" that suits her. Ruth searching for the right man shows us to what extent God will help fulfill her wants and needs in a relationship. Now, for a little background, Ruth had married Naomi's son, Mahlon, making Naomi her mother–in–law. Mahlon and Ruth had been married for 10 years before he went against the word of the Lord and died. Naomi and Ruth were widowers, which forced Ruth to get a job as a gleaner due to the fact that they were bankrupt and needed their basic needs met, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Wood (2014), the attraction phase involves much more than just being physically attracted to one another. Other attractions include: values, skills, abilities, talents, and ambitions. Wood states that attraction is not all kissing, touching, and burning passion for one another, but claims that those behaviors are more of a sense of lust that a majority of the population cares about looks before similarity. However, as stated earlier, Boaz noticed Ruth and thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. We are all about the superficial outlook, which is how attraction typically ... By just simply going on Gleaners' website, one can see a link to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube, all of which use the same handles to ensure easy access: @GleanersFBIndy or Gleaner's Food Bank of Indiana. Gleaners' Facebook account has by far the most interactions topping out at just over 9,500 likes. Gleaners uses its Facebook primarily to post pictures of volunteers at its headquarters and at different events being held (Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana Inc.). Twitter is their second most followed platform with a total of 3,900 followers (@GleanersFBIndy). The Twitter account has a slightly different feel than the Facebook account because it focuses more on talking to followers and thanking different people and organizations that volunteer with Gleaners. Instagram has a very similar feel as Twitter, in the sense that the posts are almost identical. Instagram, however, only has around 800 followers, which is surprising considering the presence on Twitter and Facebook (@gleanersfbindy). Gleaners also has accounts on Linked In, Pinterest, and YouTube, but its presence is very minimal and the posts are very infrequent. Overall, Gleaner's has a presence in the social media world that is still growing but is becoming very successful. • 9. Pissarro By 1880 the Impressionist idiom had been fully developed and Pissarro, in his constant quest for new forms of discipline and inspiration, turned his attention to drawing. The present work is an iconic example from the artist's most prolific decade of graphic output; from 1880 to 1890 he would produce nearly three–quarters of his graphic oeuvre, using his drawings as a tool to explore form and line while incorporating Neo–Impressionist techniques into his painted work. Les Glaneuses (The Gleaners) is a compendium of Pissarro's treatment of pastoral life, relating directly to the seminal painting of the same name (1887–1889). While the painted work is Neo– Impressionist in its treatment of tone, its texture is made up of a discrete series of dots, dashes and commas, anticipating that Pissarro would soon abandon the common aesthetic doctrine outlined by Seurat and Signac (see fig. 1). ... Pissarro was so enamored of the gleaners as a subject that from 1887–1889 he created eight known studies in various states of completion as he visually meditated on the composition: hurried croquis sketches produced en plein air, preparatory studies, and, in the case of the present work, fully realized presentation drawings executed in a combination of media. According to Richard Thomson, the present work, long believed to have been lost, "may either have served as a study for the painting, or as an independent, even later, variant" in the genesis of Les Glaneuses (R. • 13. Judith Murray: Sound Feminist? Judith Murray: Sound Feminist? "History repeats itself," a common phrase often spoken but rarely explained in detail, bears more truth than most realize. For instance, similar societal issues persist in various populations throughout history. The issues that encompass America today date back to earlier times, whether the problem concerns religion, race, or gender. Discrimination towards an individual on the subject of gender can be traced to biblical times, with women being those discriminated against. Women constantly feel the oppression and weight of male supremacy, particularly the women of Colonial America. These women carry the burden of harsh expectations, yet they begin to pave the way for future feminists. An exceptionally uncommon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "But, suffer me to ask, in what the minds of females are so notoriously deficient, or unequal," writes Murray with an acerbic wit in the prosaic section of "On the Equality of the Sexes" (Murray, Equality of the Sexes, 132). This first essay written by Murray begins with an extensive poem highlighting the separation of men and women for unsound reasons. In the poem, Murray acknowledges that no two minds think the same, but also notes that women as a whole are viewed as the weaker, lesser sex. Women, as the inferior sex in this time period, must submit themselves completely to their husbands or fathers. Although some Colonial Americans do not view females as lesser beings, "imbecility is still confin'd, And by the lordly sex to us consign'd" (Murray, Equality of the Sexes, 132). Women cannot stop the misogyny against their gender due to society's twisted views. Following the poetic section of the essay, Murray expresses her reasoning in prose. Based on her commentary, the commonplace perception of women as humans with naturally inferior brain capacities does not occur to Murray; in fact, she claims "their minds are by nature equal" (Murray, Equality of the Sexes, 133). Even though society shows little respect for women's rights, Murray never once shows the slightest implication of sharing these misogynistic views with the world. The entirety of "On the ... • 17. Courbet's Burial At Ornans Andean-Gleaners A Formal Analysis of Gustave Courbet's Burial at Ornans and Jean–François Millet's Gleaners The realism era came about during the time of the Romantics, the time where imagination and ideology painted the artists canvas. To be a realist meant that an artist would paint what he actually saw and not an idea of something. For instance, if an artist were to paint a depiction of war, then all the gruesome details would probably be considered in the piece of art. The artist that essentially paved the way out of Romanticism and into the era of Realism was Gustave Courbet considered by some to be the first realist. Gustave Courbet was born in region of France called Franche–Comté in 1819. Courbet was the oldest child in the family and he had three sisters that he was very close with, although the older he got the more he rebelled against his parent's wishes for him to become a lawyer; Gustave wanted to be an artist, so he eventually did break from the ideals of his parents and instead set out on his own path. Gustave was known as a rebel and in his unconventional way changed the way art was viewed. Gustave said of himself, "I offend, therefore I am." He had a strong disdain for the government and this proved to be an asset in who he would one day become. The artist came from humble beginnings of a hard working family. One day Millet drew a perfect picture on his wall and caused his father to see the gift that his son had, so at the urging of his father Millet went away to study to become an artist. Millet, much like Courbet, desired a break from the conventional artistic styles of the past, so around 1849 he rented a cottage where he realized that he loved the views of the country side and peasant life. Combines consists of hundreds of parts that move together to meet the goal of harvesting grains efficiently and in a timely manor. Without combines the world would not be able to sustain the current population. The process that the grain crop takes to move from the head of a combine to the end of the unloading auger is an impressive task. There are two main differences in modern combines, axial–flow, and natural flow. Both types have many similarities, however there are a few big differences. There are many different brands of combines including John Deere, Gleaner, Case, and New Holland. Gleaner is the only natural flow type of combine in this list while the others are axial–flow. The combine's processing of grain begins at the head. The header is an independent implement that is removable from a combine, and headers are specialized for different crops. Essay on The Visual Analysis of The Gleaners The Gleaners (Des glaneuses) is an oil painting, 83.8 cm × 111.8 cm (33 in × 44 in), created by French realist painter Jean–Francois Millet in 1857. The piece of oil painting vividly depicts the nineteenth–century French rural life, with a rich flavor of harvest. Jean–Francois Millet arranges the farm as the main scene of background, and aims at three women gleaners being bent to pick up ears of wheat. Through the observation of the painting, we can see three peasant women occupy in the center of the screen, each bending with different angles, while their eyes all raking down to the ground. To contrast with the distant crowd, they wear coarse clothes and clunky wooden shoes, having robust statures. It is not appropriate to say that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As some parts of background are closer to the light source than the front, they are applied with brighter hues, high in value. In addition, Millet places things like haystack, trees and farmhouse in the back, and peasant women in the front. Hence. On the basis the positions of objects, the principle of line perspective, and the relative distance to the viewer, three gleaners visually appear within a larger proportion on the painting. In other words, the front figures' sizes are bigger than the back objects'. Further more, in the painting, "the Gleaners", the entire screen is filled with contrast elements. First of all, the main figures in the front labor scene are full of rich vigor, contrasting to the background with silent objects such as hay, trees and farmhouse. Secondly, the color brightness of the front contrast to the back, as well as the comparison of relative sizes between figures and scenery, applying the principle of perspective. What's more, the most classic is the horizontal line, the intersection of the sky and the ground, contrasting with the light source, from the top left. Consequently, 2D and 3D spatial effects are combined precisely. Meanwhile, the sense of space of the image is strengthened as well. Judith Murray The Gleaner Judith Murray's "The Gleaner" is a collection of writings, in which she addressed crucial philosophical, social, and political issues while incorporating her reflection on the culture pertaining to the new nation, part of which she had become (Nash, 2005). The writings address the rights and roles of women in the society while underlining their equality to their male counterparts (Nash, 2005). Margaretta stories are the important aspect of these writings, which provide a portrait of an adaptable and intelligent female protagonist, meanwhile, creating the type of development and education that was valuable for women (Nash, 2005). She challenges the restriction of women to domestic roles and states that men and women are only different biologically but not intellectually (Murray, 2012). The work's particular angle and writer's style comprises of the following key points: "The Gleaner" was a column incorporated in the Massachusetts Magazine, where Murray assumed a male identity; The Gleaner utilized letters and female interactions to outline the tragic story of a woman who was seduced and abandoned by an ignominious man; The adoption of a male persona, however, does not imply ceding territory to men; Instead, she was separating print discourse from the easily assignable gender via successive convolutions. Judith Sargent Murray was an American writer in the course of the early republic. Born to a wealthy merchant and ship owner, Murray got an exceptionally good education for a woman of her time (Hurd–Smith, 1998). • 41. Food Deserts: A Case Study Food deserts are one of the biggest problems in society, as the authors of Food Justice bring up (Gottlieb & Joshi, 2013). In fact, Indianapolis is ranked worst in the nation for food deserts. So what is a food desert? A food desert is when places are left with the lack of availability of nutritious foods and high rates of poverty. Often times, these are known as grocery gaps because grocery stores move out of the area, normally located in low–income communities. It makes sense that they would move to make more profit, but it leaves those in the community left with essentially nothing. Also, most people living in a low–income community do not have access to transportation, so they cannot get to grocery stores that are outside of walking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One in six people in central and southeast Indiana has food insecurity. Most of these people are children and senior citizens. Often times, people fall into the gap where they struggle to afford food, but make too much money to be put on SNAP or free and reduced lunches for children ("About Gleaners", 2017). More than half of the people they serve all have to make choices when it comes to eating. They can either not pay for transportation, healthcare, medicine, utilities or housing, or pay for food. "Employment instability and the lack of an adequate minimum wage" are responsible for people having to choose between these ("Q & A: The Causes Behind Hunger in America", 2017). Without money to pay for things like transportation and food, people are left hungry. Gleaners works to fight hunger by collecting, storing and distributing food to those who need it most. Having food takes the stress off of others so they can buy other things they need and do not have to choose. Gleaners has many different options to distribute food to individuals. The program takes places every Tuesday at 10 am at the ministries location, 5181 East Outer Drive. Developed from a partnership with Gleaners Community Food Bank, this program is aimed to impact the lives of many lower income Detroit residents. Each Tuesday, individuals who attend the program are given a weeks worth of groceries. Founder and Pastor of New Breakthrough stated "Grab is this ministries ways to do their part in fighting against hunger in Detroit." First starting Grab in 2010, New Breakthrough hoped to simply reach five families per week. This number quickly grew to over twenty families being directly impact each Tuesday. An unexpected change within the ministry also began to take place as a result of the program. Over time, individuals who were regulars during the Tuesday program began to attending services. According to the Gleaner dated Wednesday September 10, 2008 in the business section, The European Union represents a market of 490 million people, but critics of the agreement say that regional businesses are too small to adequately exploit such large markets, and that those companies that are able to compete will likely be overtaken targets by larger European Cooperation. • 53. Low Income Families Dealing With Hunger As My Population... Low income families are struggling every day not only to pay their bills but to put food on the table for their families. There are many obstacles that prevent parents from being able to provide meals for their family and that is because they are either running a household alone, have a low income, or cannot find a job. "Hunger was associated strongly with unemployment, part–time employment for economic reasons (i.e., because more work could not be found), not working because of a disability, recent household moves, and low education"(Tapogna 2004). With no source of income parents struggle to feed their children. Hunger does not only affect the parents but the children as well it can affect their academic success, social life, and cause them to have food insecurities. I believe this is a common topic that is affecting families all over the world, which is why I chose low income families dealing with hunger as my population choice. (Background information about your target population) My hypothesis was that most families are more likely to face hunger because there is only one parent working and managing to pay bills. My research indicated that single parent households (specifically single mothers) are more likely to face the effects of hunger. One study found that the odds of hunger are affected by resource constraints in low–income female–headed families (Wehler 2004). Gleaners are a group of poor lower class people who found work from landowners after the French revolution. Created by Jean–Francois Millet in 1857, the painting depicts the harsh life of the extremely poor. There is realism in this painting because it tells history as it is and doesn't try to passively project an image. In the painting there are three peasant women harvesting grains in the field, fully clothed, carrying the heavy weight of the grains across their body. Bent over for hours throughout the day with the weight of the grains on backs, there is no cart to lessen the agony of their aching backs. Gustave Courbet's The Stone Breakers and–Jean Francois Millet's The Gleaners, are two paintings that use the style of realism to convey a unique perspective of the reality around them. (subjects, brush stroke, background) The Stone Breakers is a painting that was created in the year 1849, by French artist Gustave Courbet. This painting has the dimensions of 165 x 257 cm, and was done with the medium oil on canvas. Upon first glance, a viewer can see this work as two males doing that remove and break stone from a road that is being built. However, the painting's connotative meaning shows a man that appears to be too old and a boy that appears to be too young for such harsh labour. Courbet had made this decision with the intention of sharing his perspective on the reality of the abuse and deprivation that had occurred in French rural life during that time period. Courbet's intentions are significant because they display a truthful perspective while using ordinary people. Courbet refrained from using subjects of people who are wealthy, and live a more glamourous lifestyle, which was a norm for many french artists to incorporate in their work. The Stone Breakers is a painting that challenges the ideologies in society, and provide viewers with a new way of thinking towards the norms of labour in the society during the time period. Yimeng Sun Professor Bryson VIS 22 Final Paper March 16, 2016 The Shift in Representation of Working Class in Modern Art Jean–Batiste Simeon Chardin was famous for his still life painting, which depicts the ordinary life in 18th century. As most artists belonged to the Rococo style at that time, in which artists painted about the luxury life of aristocracy, Chardin chose to go against Rococo and began to paint about the ordinary life to bring the art to the public viewers. He used still–life painting to show the link between the motions of the body's repetitious habit and the stable world around the body, instead of just painting about the body itself. In the 19th century, there were two artists who were famous for their paintings of working class, Jean–François Millet and Gustave Millet. In Millet's painting The Gleaners, he painted three women bending over to reach out for left–over grains, which showed the combination of women and subservience to create a sense of collective harmony. The action of gleaning, when the wealthier owners have harvested their corps and the poor are entitles to pick up whatever is left over, is a biblical reference–comes from old testament. Although those women were the lowest–class individuals of the society, even in the working class, they were put in the right settings and gestures which suites their working–class identities. Viewers can forget about individual painfulness in favor of collective harmony by showing the dignity of multiple gleaners moving rhythmically together. The Gleaners received tremendous popularity of this painting the 19th century. He painted about the working class to show his sympathy and sentimental approach towards working class, and also to support his opinion of anti–bourgeois. He allowed viewers to take multiple position in relation to his work, wither in natural empathic reaction of sympathy for poverty versus monumental dignity of organized motion, or in dilemma between polite taste and radical opinions. According to the reading The Absolute Bourgeois by T.J. Clark, the author quoted from Rochery, who compare Millet with Courbet to show Millet's true love of country: "M.Millet's picture is certainly painted from life, like M. Courbet's, but one can sense greater spontaneity and depth in the painter's impressions, a truer love of country life and country people. • 77. The Gleaners Essay The Gleaners was painted in 1857 by French painter Jean–Francois Millet, during the Realism movement. The painting depicts the austere image of three women collecting stray wheat left on the field after a harvest. Millet, considered the founder of 19th century peasant painting, drew attention to a contemporary phenomenon, the painstaking but dignified labor of peasants. Flaming June is quite the opposite of the Gleaners in theme, style and mood. Produced by Victorian artist Sir Frederic Leighton in 1895, the painting depicts a young woman sleeping on a marble bench covered in drapery, wearing a sheer orange dress with a view of the Mediterranean behind her. Leighton was an Pre–Raphaelite painter and sculptor, meaning he emulated the art of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this regard, both paintings depict women differently. In The Gleaners, the women are depicted realistically in a very austere and dignified manner. The women are in the very down–to–earth setting of a farming field that Millet illustrates in a golden haze and adds realistic details such as haystacks, sheaves of wheat, a cart and a busy crowd of harvesters. The peasant women also look sensible, with their dark skin, patched clothing and hair covered in caps. This reflects the women's poorness, but also the grittiness of the job they are doing. The women have the same poses of bending close to the ground, suggesting the lowly, debased position of a peasant. But at the same time, the women's careful poses and gestures give them a sense of dignity in how they carry themselves, strong and sure even when they are doing such lowly laber. The way the three figures dominate the whole space lends them a sense of grandeur; a grandeur that is also enhanced by the great size of the painting. Millet probably developed the painting in reference to biblical heroine Ruth, who gleaned the field of Boaz to suggest the modest and virtuous work of the women carrying out God's will. It was satisfying to hear the supervisor give us the total of 15 tons sorted through. Both paintings are in the Realist style with The Sower painted in 1849 and The Gleaners in 1857. The Sower measures at 101 X 80.7cm whereas The Gleaners is 83.5 X 110cm. This essay will look at how these paintings are representative of Realism through their social and political context and elements of style. The Realist effect of Millet's paintings will be shown in comparison with another painting of similar time, The Recall of the Gleaners (bottom image) by Jules Breton (1859). A key aspect of realism is a social agenda within the painting, which both Millet's paintings evoke. The Gleaners is making a remark at the divide in the rural society. Salon goers thought he was bringing poverty and dirt to the Salon. The painting shakes the ideologies of French society. Audiences wanted to believe peasants were happy and comfortable in their lives so that they would not revolt again. The Gleaners shows realism by depicting the peasants as unhealthy and by hiding their faces. Making the peasants anonymous shows the suffering of their class and that rural France was an unequal society. Millet makes a criticism of the Bourgeoisie lifestyle in the painting. This is exactly what Agnès Varda, a French filmmaker often associated with the French New Wave, does in 2000, at the age of 70, in her first digital film, Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse, a documentary about gleaning in all its possible different forms. In order to convey her ideas about gleaning in her documentary Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse, Varda uses both technical tools and thought–provoking content. This is evident through the way she utilizes her chosen mode of production as the base for film's design. It is also made clear by the impact this design has on the themes and content. The film can also be associated with Wasp, a British short directed by Andrea Arnold, because of their captivating thematic and formal similarities. First of all, Varda's Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse's mode of production, and more specifically her use of a handheld digital camera and a very reduced film crew, serves as a foundation for its design–the way it arranges its elements and details. Indeed, for this film, Varda uses a digital camera for the first time and goes on the road with a small sound and camera crew. This allows her to be more flexible and capture great, unexpected moments–in a way, like a gleaner–and also gives off a more casual, gleaning–like feeling. Gleaners And Varda The film The Gleaners and I (2000), by Agnès Varda, is a subtle attempt at bridging the gap between the past and the present by showing how tradition, necessity, and art have kept certain customs alive. In this uniquely intimate documentary, Varda sets out to find individuals who still practice the archaic lifestyle of gleaning, historically done by groups of women after the harvest. On her journey, Varda meets an array of characters from different backgrounds who all glean for different reasons. As she weaves these unique stories together, she manages to simultaneously paint a larger, but more subdued, portrait of herself. This film is like no other documentary that I have ever seen. The Gleaners and I seems to focus on individuals who scavenge for food out of necessity, the fear of being wasteful, or just for fun. During these parts of the film, I felt like I was intruding, like I had entered a territory where I did not belong; I did not feel unwelcome, but I also could not understand. The Burial At Ornans Essay The Realism movement flourished in the mid–19th Century, beginning after the Revolution of 1848 in France and continuing with the struggle to implement a more democratic system of government. It was an attempt to reject the idealization of reality in art, instead its aim was to 'give a truthful, objective and impartial representation of the real world, based on meticulous observation of contemporary life' . One of the leading figures of the movement, Courbet, stunned his audience with his Realist painting of The Burial at Ornans (1849–1850; Musée d'Orsay, Paris), which is an oil on canvas with the large dimensions of 315 x 660 cm. The group of women at the right seem to almost blend together in a sea of black. This positioning of the group, who seem to press together, is a nod to realistic group dynamics, which are messy and disorganized, not sterile and easy to distinguish. The characters in the novel, rather than protest the injustices shown towards Japanese Americans, let themselves be perceived as "enemy aliens". They acted submissively and obeyed the government's orders without question. Even the woman "who did not always follow the rules, followed the rules." (9) This character had not always done as she was told, yet this time accepted the situation, packing up the family belongings to leave her home. She wanted, just like the majority of the Japanese Americans at that time, to show her support to America because she knew that her and her family's future depended on her response to Pearl ... They "looked at [themselves] in the mirror and did not like what [they] saw: black hair, yellow skin, slanted eyes. The cruel face of the enemy." (119–120) These asian attributes, which had always been a part of them, were suddenly being portrayed as "Unknowable. Inscrutable." (49) However, despite the racism that they had to go through, they still didn't complain. Submissiveness was a part of their nature, which is portrayed in various symbols throughout the novel, one of which was The Gleaners painting that the woman took down. It showed three gleaners bent over, gathering leftovers of harvest in their hands. She decided to throw it away because "[i]t bothered her, the way those peasants were forever bent over above that endless field of wheat." (8) The woman saw the gleaners as "forever bent over," (8) which was a sign of obedience––so very relevant to what was happening at the time. The woman felt that her people could try for years and years, but because racism was so widespread, they would never be able to fit into America's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparative Art: A Progression from Realism to Impressionism Realism to Impressionism 1 Realism to Impressionism: A Progression The 19th century was a time of radical change and innovation in nearly every aspect of society. The Industrial Revolution changed the face of transportation, business, and science. A race for resources and power among European nations led to colonization of the most remote areas of the world. Old political structures stumbled while new ones like Communism took root. The arts were not immune to this climate of change. Literature, music, and fine art all underwent deep shifts in practice and philosophy. One of the most radical of these shifts occurred in the painting world in late 19th century France. Realism, a school established in the mid–1800s and committed to portraying the world in the most accurate detail as possible, gave way to Impressionism, an entirely new artistic philosophy embracing ambiguity and emotion. This profound change can be seen in the comparison of paintings from each period; namely, The Gleaners by Realist painter Jean–Francois Millet and Hay Harvest at Eragny by Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. A comparative analysis of these paintings shows not only the innovative and reactionary elements of the Impressionist movement, but also how it maintained and developed important characteristics of Realism. The school of French Realism was established in mid–19th century France as a response to some important intellectual and philosophical developments in post–Revolutionary France. ... • 121. Recall Of The Gleaners artworks is "Recall of the Gleaners." The underprivileged rural community had the ancient right to glean, or gather, ears of wheat left by harvesters. At sunset, the gleaners harvested like caryatids (the women of Caryae in Ancient Greece, sentenced to hard labor for aiding the Persians). It was typical of the Realist movement to show their subjects in large format, similar to those in historical paintings. The painting proved successful with critics at the French "Le Salon de 1859," because they appreciated the naturalistic and poetic vision of the rural world. The interest in the painting, however, was based on the art itself, not the message. Many of today's critics say that Breton saw things differently than his fellow Realists, especially Courbet and was more accepted because of it. "Jules Breton looked at the world and the future with an optimistic eye.... Where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like his father, he too worked the soil and thought highly of those who made their living off the land. Millet's works changed considerably over his lifetime. Considering his earlier paintings as frivolous, he finally found his role as an artist after the Revolution of 1848 and from his disdain for the city of Paris. In the summer of 1849 he went to Barbizon, a little village about one league from Chailly, on the borders of the Forest of Fontainebleau. He only meant to spend a few weeks there; but remained for the rest of his life – twenty–seven years. Although his work was at its best during this period, he was only understood by a few. Much of the public believed he was using artwork of hard and rough peasants as the "Sower" as revolutionary–to condone socialism and appeal to the masses. As he grew older, Millet became more secure of his direction. However, with the advent of World War I and devastating deaths in his family, he began only to paint landscapes without the remarkable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Impressionism And Influence In Art In The 19th And 20th... As art practices evolved during the 19th and 20th centuries, the elite of society became an object of criticism and obscurity as subject matter, whereas the working class began to appear in artworks in a more open and positive light. This shift in artworks depicting the working class in favor of aristocracy is clear in the analysis of three different periods, with the works of three different artists: Jean–François Millet, Pierre–Auguste Renoir, and Vera Mukhina. Millet depicts the working class forthright in his works, such as The Gleaners (1857); he focuses on the futility of labor and the conditions of the emerging middle class in reaction to the extravagance and leisure of the aristocracy around him. Renoir utilizes an Impressionistic style to depict the working class neighborhood and surroundings he lives in; in paintings such as Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881), he exposes the leisurely lifestyle of the working class and their integration into the rest of society. The working class could now intermix with the aristocracy in a way that had never before been plausible. Mukhina, however, like other Socialist Realist artists, represents the working class in her sculpture Worker and Collective Farm Girl (1937) as a powerful and driving force; in the piece, noticeably absent is any reference to the elite in society. Marking a great departure from earlier representations of the working class, Mukhina places the worker front and center in a positive light. Together, these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Are The Cleaners By Jean-Francois Millet Called The... The remnants of the 1830 French revolution provided artists of its time material to create paintings that depicted the despairs and inequalities of the lower social class. Several artists became well known for their realistic portrayal of the hardships and conflicts of their environment. Two artists known as "Realists" are Gustave Courbet (1819– 1877) and Jean–Francois Millet (1814–1875). This paper will discuss a particular piece painted by Jean–Francois Millet called THE GLEANERS. THE GLEANERS by Jean–Francois Millet was completed in 1857. The painting is an oil on canvas with the dimensions of 33 inches by 44 inches which would have been unusually large for a painting of this type in that period since large canvas works were usually reserved ... • 141. Food Deserts And Food Deserts Food deserts are one of the biggest problems in society, as the authors of Food Justice bring up (Gottlieb & Joshi, 2010). Also, most people living in a low–income community do not have access to transportation, so they cannot get to grocery stores that are outside of walking distance. This is why Gleaners, a local food justice organization, steps in and fills in places where grocery stores have left. The program that works to fix this is Mobile Pantries. As I will explore later, Mobile Pantries allows people who cannot reach grocery stores the ability to get nutritious foods they need. Mobile Pantries give people a sense of going to the grocery store and picking out healthy foods. While consumer choice is limited, as Patel mentions, Mobile Pantries still gives people healthy options (Patel, 2014). Gleaners is a part of the Food Justice Movement because while they are not changing consumer choice, they are providing individuals with the option of healthy foods and working to end hunger and obesity ... • 149. Gustave Courbet Gleaners A Formal Analysis of Gustave Courbet's Burial at Ornans and Jean–François Millet's Gleaners The realism era came about during the time of the Romantics, the time where imagination and ideology painted the artists canvas. He dismissed academic painting and insisted that Realist painting was only what one could actually see. His most famous statement is "I have never seen an angel. Show me an angel, and I'll paint one." Gustave Courbet was born in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Millet used an oil medium and centered the subject matter on canvas with dimensions measuring at around thirty–three inches in height and forty–four inches in width. This piece appears to be photorealistic because in the center of the work, the three peasant workers come across in an almost life–like representation of a mundane task. The Gleaners is an excellent depiction of the daily struggles of the of the lower income class. Paul de Saint–Victor, an essayist and literary critic of the time bestowed on this work of art to be "The three Fates of pauperism." Millet used the appearance of a sunset and his use of color seems to illuminate on these women as they work. The color and the fact that Millet placed the three women so much in the foreground placed emphasis on the work and the strength that they carry. Jean-Francois Millet: Painting Analysis Jean–Francois Millet's Potato Planters is a portrayal of two farmers; more likely husband and wife, planting seeding to grow potatoes during the day on their farm. This art has a lot of emphasis, movement, color, line, light, and depth. The emphasis behind this piece of artwork is the farmer and his wife planting the potato seeds. Farmers had to grow everything that they needed to survive. People don't have to grow what they eat and need to survive like people many years ago needed. The purpose of the donkey in the background could be because of animals were used to till the fields before the seeds were planted. There is a very strong meaning behind the painting and shows how life really was. Basic colors were used to show the difference in people, sky, ground, plants, ... Jean– Francois also shows the farmer in a bent way moving the dirt from the hole for his wife to drop the seeds in the hole. The artist also painted clouds in the sky which looks like they are supposed to be moving. The whole painting seems to be alive with a lot of movement occurring. Depth is mostly occurring in the background with the mountains and the field with going all the way to the mountains. Jean–Francois Millet did an amazing job in showing the depth in his artwork. By adding the depth in the artwork, the artwork easily become more realistic. Normally a person can look across a field and can see for miles. That is exactly what Jean–Francois Millet did when he painted the Potato Planters. Line is used in every artwork ever painted. There are many lines in the tree, people, and mountain. The mountain has very curvy line just like the tree does. Lines are also used to separate where the farm ends and where the mountain begins. The lines also help give depth into the artwork where is separates the mountain and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
