The Caribbean (Dutch: Cariben or Caraïben, or more commonly Antillen; French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles; Spanish: Caribe) is a region of the Americas consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of North America, east of Central America, and to the north and west of South America.
The area comprises more than 7000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. It is an island chain 2500 miles long and no more than 160 miles wide at any point.
Curacao is an island of the BenedenwindseEilanden (Leeward Islands) and of the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Its area is 171 square miles (444 square km), and it is situated some 37 miles (60 km) north of the coast of Venezuela, near the southwestern extreme of the Lesser Antilles.
