Background
Ayurveda believes that our body is made up of five elements (Panchabhutas). When joined in different
combinations, they make up the three “doshas” or “biological modes” which are the “Prakruti” or
nature of an individual and all things. As long as these three Doshas, namely Vata (air & space- “Wind”),
Pitta (fire & water- “bile”) and Kapha (water & earth- “phlegm”), are balanced, we enjoy perfect health.
Ayurvedic theory asserts that every human possesses a unique combination of doshas that define a
person’s temperament and characteristics. Each person has a natural system state, an innate
combination of the three elements, and she should seek balance by structuring her behavior or
environment to infuse more of the element(s) she lacks.
Ancient Indian books tell us that people used to live long and healthy lives spanning two hundred years.
The modern medicine also reflects the importance of Ayurveda in its base which is obtained from the
ancient texts and scriptures on which Ayurveda is based. And following ancient texts and scriptures, the
Vedas are of prime significance in the context in which the entire science of life had been created and
gathered, more than five thousand years ago.
The Event
The methods and specifications of Ayurveda, which is a highly detailed science of life, are complex for
the masses to connect with easily. Taking this into consideration, “Vibrant Gujarat National Ayurveda
Summit- 2014” was organized by ‘Health and Family Welfare Department’ of Government of Gujarat
with an intent to clear the fog surrounding Ayurveda and make it more easily accessible and explorable.
Ayurveda is believed to be the basis of all medical sciences and is a precious treasure of Indian history.
Yet it has not achieved the status it deserves, and least of all in India. The basis of this summit and expo
was to revive Ayurveda by changing perception of people towards Ayurvedic practices. The event was
also aimed at reviving the work patterns of the Ayurveda industry in India, such as improving its
marketing practices, global branding of Ayurveda, etc.
The first of its kind, one-day event witnessed academicians, practitioners, healthcare professionals,
students, researchers, manufacturers, international representatives, investors and inventors sharing a
common platform to discuss on ‘Enriching Public Health through Ayurveda’.
Backed by the involvement and support of major organizations, the event was unique in terms of scale
size, content, contributors and participants. Besides facilitating interaction between industry and foreign
delegates, the mega event also featured free health check-ups, lectures and counseling by specialists

from Ayurveda, Prakriti Pariksha, Nadi Pariksha and Panchkarma. Overall, the event had a total of eight
technical sessions by various experts.
Inaugural Session
The event started with “Dhanvantri Pujan” by Hon’ble Chief Minister and prayer recital by renowned
artist Shri. Saumil Munshi. The event was then inaugurated by lighting of the lamp by Shri. Narendra
Modi, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat. Various other dignitaries were also present.

Welcome Address
Shri. Rajesh Kishore, IAS welcomed Hon’ble Chief Minister,
Hon’ble Ministers of state, Swami Ramdevji Maharaj and
other dignitaries to Vibrant Gujarat National Ayurveda
Summit 2014. He also welcomed all the medical
practitioners, students, marketing strategists, professionals,
consultants, policy makers, diplomats, representatives of
foreign business corporations, industry associations and
trade delegations from India and abroad, businessmen,
manufacturers, retailers, and the general public present. He
indicated that VGNAS-14 is one of the largest Summit in the
complementary and alternative healthcare industry in the
world.
Yoga Guru Shri. Baba Ramdevji
Yoga Guru Shri. Baba Ramdev spoke of how Ayurveda was
being given its due credit from the land of Gujarat, and
stated how this form of medicine has cured several
diseases like thyroid, BP and asthma. He emphasised that
all forms of medicine must be given due importance, and
stressed on the need to have better infrastructure for
promoting Ayurveda. He also highlighted the urgent need
to invest increasingly on Ayurvedic medicines and the
methods followed in ancient Indian medicine system. If
properly tapped, this could be the key to India’s aspiration
towards global super power status. He indicated that
National Ayurveda Summit organized in Gujarat shall
establish the prestige of traditional Ayurveda therapy for protecting health in these changing waves of
the world.

Shri. Parbatbhai Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State for Health and Family
Welfare
Shri. Parbatbhai Patel in his address indicated that the Government of Gujarat organized this National
Ayurveda Summit to give a platform to researchers, practitioners and Ayurveda institutions to promote
Ayurveda on a global scale. He highlighted that over 7000 people from Ayurveda community gathered at
the mega event. Shri. Parbatbhai Patel also informed the audience that currently 10 Universities are
functional in Gujarat and impart courses related to Ayurveda out of which 4 are government
organizations. He pointed out that the world’s first Ayurveda University was Gujarat University,
Jamnagar with more than 40 international students. He informed the audience that with an expenditure
of around INR 150 crore, new Ayurveda College and Hospital was being built in Kolavda village of
Gandhinagar as a model Ayurvedic College for the state. The new college would have a 400-bed
hospital, with state-of-the-art facilities for Ayurveda, nursing, pharmacy, etc. Shri. Patel also added that
with a budget of over INR 75 crore, the state government has decided to start two new Ayurveda
colleges in Dahod and Rajpipla. Moreover, the state government is planning to widen its base of over
500 pharmacies.Hon’ble Minister expressed hope that setting up Ayurveda centres near tourists
destinations like Gir forest or in Saputara will not only boost medical tourism, but also will lead to overall
growth of tourism. Shri. Patel also indicated that to give Ayurveda its proper place in medical science,
the state government has brought together all the Ayurveda experts, manufacturers, practitioners on a
common platform, i.e., the Vibrant Gujarat Ayurveda Summit. It will explore all the business and medical
science possibilities of Ayurveda. He said that the seminars will cover topics like importance of Ayurveda
in pregnancy and motherhood and Ayurvedic kitchen remedies for health and beauty.
Shri. Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat
Shri. Narendra Modi spoke of how the untapped potential of Ayurveda has significant scope in the
future as the concept of holistic healthcare was increasingly being adopted by people across the globe.
He stated that along with giving emphasis to the practitioners, an equal focus must be laid on the
Ayurveda medicine manufacturers. Speaking on promoting Ayurveda through better application of
technology, Shri. Narendra Modi highlighted how branding and packaging of the vast base of Ayurvedic
medicines, and the extensive knowledge of Ayurveda, would escalate their demand across the globe and
thereby increase our exports. He indicated that India has lot of talent but we need to present it to the
world in the most modern manner. He also suggested other ways of promotion, including digitalisation
of ancient manuscripts.
Shri. Narendra Modi also put forth many ways to promote the use of Ayurveda, some of which included
tapping the countries that believe in traditional medicine and engaging them in discussions and
affiliating our Ayurvedic colleges with foreign colleges. He stressed that by taking such initiatives at the
global level, other countries could be brought under the umbrella of Ayurveda and a corpus fund could
be created and used for intensive research in this field. The increased emphasis laid by the State
government, on promoting Ayurveda, was clearly reflected in the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s statement of

the budget for the same, which rose from INR 36 crore few years back to INR 325 crore in the current
plan.
Urging the audience to take effective steps at creating a ‘Swastha Bharat’, Shri. Narendra Modi called for
the need to raise awareness on Intellectual Property Rights, stating that patenting was the need-of-the-hour
for Ayurveda. He also spoke of the vast scope entailed in the practise of Ayurveda and emphasized
on the need to understand and value our rich Ayurvedic legacy, instead of doubting its prevalence and
effectiveness.
He highlighted how the prevalence and preference for Ayurveda will increase only if its practitioners
have trust in its effectiveness and only if the patient has enough patience to follow it. He also put forth
the example of Mahatma Gandhi’s immense faith in our culture and urged the audience to have faith in
the efficacy of Ayurveda.
Asserting that the problems of ‘hurry, worry and curry’ are the main cause of concern for humankind,
Shri. Modi called for the need to adopt an approach that promotes the balance of all three aspects and
ensures improved living. He also put forth the pioneering initiative of the ETC (Electro-Tridosh-Gram),
which, like the ECG, reflected the imbalance, if any, in the ‘Tridosh’ of the human body.

Thank You Address
Dr. Bhogra in his thank you address thanked the state government for providing a unique opportunity to
the Ayurveda community to come together and discuss various issues related to Ayurveda, its research
and marketing. He indicated that this summit shall act as a precursor to the vision of “Swastha Bharat”.
He also thanked the entire audience for their participation in the summit.
Book Release
Shri. Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat released two books published by Divya
Prakashan, Pitanjli Yogpith named:

a) “RuchiVadhu Gala Ratna Mala”
The book is composed of an ancient Ayurveda and cookery affiliate. It contains a wide variety of
vegetarian recipes, with ontological description in poetic style, which help in alleviating
anorexia, dyspepsia and are particularly healthy. Originally written in ancient Sanskrit, and as yet
unpublished, this book has been recompiled and published in simple Hindi translation for the
first time.
b) “Aushadh Darshan”
A Repertoire of proven Miraculous Ayurvedic Remedies in ten languages namely - Marathi, Bengali,
Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Nepali, Gujarati, Assamese, Kannada, Urdu

Ayurveda has to be initiated with a focus to validate and articulate the core concepts of Ayurveda

Study of the outcomes and mechanisms of complex treatments seem to be the priority areas for
research in the wake of globalisation

 There should be a new and different research design for evidence based research in Ayurveda
 Epistemological difference between Ayurveda & biomedical science should be considered while
discussing evidence based research issues for Ayurveda
 Ayurveda is based on 5000 years of clinical practice. Hence, in place of conventional evidence-based
medicine (EBM) clinical trials, practice-based clinical trials should be organized for Ayurveda

• In many incurable diseases where lot of chemical medicines are being used producing iatrogenic
disorders, the Rasayana therapy can be used as complementary medicine to manage the
adverse effects and provide the better quality of life to potentially ill patients
Outcome/ Suggestions by Panellists:
 There is a solution for Non- Communicable Diseases (NCD) with Ayurveda
 WHO also suggests use of traditional medicine for the management of NCDs
 It is proposed to uplift the status of Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar as Central University for
the promotion and propagation of Ayurveda aggressively. Expansion of university affiliation outside
the country should be encouraged
 Chair of Research should be set up at Ayurveda Educational Institutes with the support of Industry
 Center of Excellence should be developed for purpose of strengthening of continuous education in
Ayurveda
 An alliance of all the Ayurveda practicing countries should be formed to create a “Global Pressure
Group” to provide international platform and recognition to Ayurveda
 Stress and Other psychological problems are becoming coming that can be well managed by
Rasayana and Manas Chikitsa described in Ayurveda. An applied protocol for the same may be
standardized

 Lifestyle disorders like diabetes, mellitus, Hypertension etc. are increasing at alarming rate in the
society. An awareness program for adaption of healthy lifestyle as prescribed in Ayurveda i.e.
Dincharya, Rutucharya, Achar Rasayana should be an integral part of NCD management
 Efforts on maintaining biodiversity & cultivation of medicinal plants for creating continuous,
sustainable and quality supply chain of herbal medicines to the people of the industry
 Quality standardization of Ayurveda drugs is most essential and crucial for meeting the global
demand, which in turn calls for special infrastructure.
 Existing Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences (I.I.A.P.S.) should be upgraded as the
National Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical and Research Centre
 There is a huge demand for para-medical staff, compounders, panchkarma technitions, etc. Regular
courses for this purpose should be started at existing Ayurveda institutes and by setting up
dedicated centers for the same
 Quality audit rating system for Ayurveda clinics and hospitals for boosting quality Ayurveda services
and tapping the opportunity of Gujarat as “Ayurveda Health Tourism Destination”. The same may be
established in a PPP format
 State Municipal Hospitals can establish Ayurveda Departments as a part of Holistic-Integrative
Healthcare, this being the new basis of delivery of AYUSH Services in the future
 Promotion of an integrative approach to healthcare should be encouraged
 For Ayurveda Sector to compete in an International Market, the sector needs to take the abode of
“Technology”
 An alliance of all Ayurveda practicing countries should be formed to create global pressure group to
provide international platform and recognition to Ayurveda
