1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?

2. I think this shot helps to encourage the audience to recognise this character as a
teenager. This is mainly suggested through the micro-element, “Mise-en scene”. The
costume used here, shows a person that is quite on fashion, with casual footwear
which have pale blue laces, which suggests that they are not afraid of standing out.
This practical attire also suggests that they might be busy and need grip, like for
driving. Therefore, I think that we represented the social group of a teenager ages
between the ages of 15 and 17. We decided on this social group as It helps to get
the audience into the story, as they could imagine it being their child, or even
themselves.
3. In this shot from the film “Taken” we see a young girl who is crying (shown by the
redness and dampness around her eyes) and who looks like she is grasping onto her
phone for comfort. This suggests that she is frightened. This shot is representing a
teenager. The character is developed through the pretty pink flower design on her
sleeve and back of her jacket to show a immature element. This is shown again in
the girls small necklace with a pendent on. This leads us as an audience to believe
that this young girl is defenceless and innocent. Therefore, representing children
and teenagers. We did not want to portray our victim like this as we don’t have the
victim in an struggle at the beginning, as our opening begins after the murder has
taken place.
4. This shot from a BBC new story, shows a young teen doing a school report for the
news programme. She is dressed in a school uniform, which suggests her age to be
up to the age of 16 as most schools ditch school uniform by time the students begin
6th form. This image shows this girl to be in the social group of a school girl, who is
helping her community is a positive and respected way as she is representing her
school for the better. We didn’t think that this social group would be very good to
portray due to the fact that using young children may create many emotional issues
that would be confronted which would upset our audience.
5. • Our representation contrasts with the other social groups as we chose a
more sophisticated teen, where as those I have discussed use a more
immature approach to create a younger and more innocent and defenceless
character.
• However, our character is similar to the girl from “Taken” in the way that they
are young, and have colour on their costume to help shine their personality
through. This technique develops their character, and creates greater
sympathy when they are murdered as the audience feels like they know
them on a personal level.
• When comparing the school girl to our social group, we see that there is
great difference in age due to the costume being a school uniform.
