8. World War II had already been going on for two
years before the United States joined the fighting.
They had originally had no intention of joining the
war. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941 changed that.
12. Let’s Talk A Little About
Propaganda
Propaganda are “Ideas or statements that
are often false or exaggerated and that are
spread in order to help a cause, a political
leader, a government, etc.” (Merriam Webster
Dictionary)
I want to look at some of these actual World
War II posters and have you guys tell me
what you see, and why try to explain why they
show what they do.
13. Example of Propaganda
Known as “Rosie the Riveter”
she represented the millions of
women who began working in
factories all around the United
States taking the place of all of
the men being sent to fight in
the war.
Women around the U.S. quickly
responded to Rosie the Riveter,
who convinced them that they
had a patriotic duty to enter the
workforce.
In this picture, Rosie
represented strength, not only
for the United States, but for all
women within the country who
were doing everything possible
at home to help the men across
the ocean.

23. Some propaganda is VERY negative and show the
opposing side as horrible creatures. Sometimes
propaganda posters rely on stereotypes.
A couple of stereotypes that are around that are
completely NOT TRUE include:
Girls are not as good at sports as men.
Everyone from the Middle East is a terrorist.
All blond people are not intelligent.
Who can tell me what a stereotype is?
To believe unfairly that all people or things with a
particular characteristic are the same. Whether that
characteristic be by race, gender, or culture.
