was simple: Don’t look away.
Don’t look down. Don’t pretend
not to see hurt. Look people in
the eye. Even when their pain
is overwhelming. And when you are in pain,
find the people who can look you in the eye.
We need to know we are not alone,
especially when we are hurting.”

anything, and your heart will certainly be
wrung and possibly be broken. If you
want to make sure of keeping it intact,
you must give your heart to no one,
not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully
round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid
all entanglements; lock it up safe in (a) casket or
coffin...But in that casket – safe, dark,
motionless, airless – it will change. It will not be
broken; it will become unbreakable…”
