2. On January 9, 2013,
The Volunteer Center
of San Gabriel Valley
sponsored the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day of Service in the City of Duarte.
3. Over 40 youth volunteers
from Duarte High School
helped with planting a
drought-tolerant garden at
the entrance to the newly
refurbished Duarte High
School sports stadium.
6. An estimated 100 volunteer hours were
completed during this Day of Service.
7. On January 17, 2013, City of Duarte held Remembrance Ceremony for
Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Performing Arts Center in Duarte.
This ceremony featured student performances, essay award winners, and guest
speakers, such as Dr. Terrance Roberts. Dr. Roberts braved hostile students and as
he was one of the first few to enter a desegregated high school in Little Rock, AK
during the 1950s. His speech was inspiration for all in attendance.
8. The MLK Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony was also featured on the
Access Duarte website, and was also covered by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
9. As a result of this wonderful MLK Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony, the
Volunteer Center and the City of Duarte are now planning a third day of service.

school year, and will utilize adult
