Let’s admit it, the tools for writing CSS aren’t very advanced. For the most part, the people who write tools don’t know about CSS and the people who know about CSS don’t write tools. Quite a conundrum! In this session, you’ll learn about good tools that can make development faster and maintenance easier. We’ll also talk a bit about where we can go from here. What tools do we need as sites are becoming more and more complex? We need to get beyond tools whose primary goal is to avoid hand-coding and realize that, as our techniques for writing CSS become more powerful, our tools can too! Ester Ytterbrink's talk on "FOSS for Crips" - free software for accessibility at the track "Universal Design — Aiming for Accessibility" on FSCONS 2011. With a license to live — FOSS for crips by Ester Ytterbrink We all know the benefits and limitations of FOSS. How can we apply these to software accessibility tools? Why should there be more FOSS software for people with disabilities? Why are not all accessibility tools FOSS? What can crips give back to the FOSS community? My master thesis "FOSS för funkisar" was an investigation and exploration of the perceptions of FOSS software among people who work with and/or use accessibility tools. I will use this as a foundation as I reason around these questions. My wish is to challenge the relation between the producer, consumer and financier of accessibility tools. I want to show how FOSS can be used to change the way some of the people who are most dependent of their computers think of open source and free software.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.
