5. INTRODUCTION
Social Science is a subject of study at the Secondary School level which
offers a systematic study of man in relation to this society. According Charles
Beard Social Sciences are a body of knowledge and thought pertaining to human
affairs. It is an understanding dialogue between past and present which would help
the nation to mould a better future. The text books and the hand books are very
important in the subject of Social Science. These study based on the difference
between text book and hand book.
Any book used as the basis as partial basis of a concern of study can be
called a text book. It is a specially written book which contains selective and
systematic knowledge. Every care is taken for coherence and sequence. It is made
simple to the degree that suits the intended leaner. It is not a bare statement of
knowledge but it is armed with various teaching learning devices to fulfill the
desired instructional role. A hand book is a type a reference work, or other
collection of instructions, that is intended to provide ready reference. A hand book
is a treatise on a special subject. Nowadays it is often a simple but all embracing
treatment containing concise information and being small enough to be held in the
hand.
6. TEXT BOOK
Any book used as the basis or partial basis of a concern of study can
be called a text book. A textbook differs from an ordinary book mainly on the
score that it combines within its teaching, learning techniques and motives.
Textbooks are infact the most common denometers frequently found in the
classrooms throughout the world. The consensus of opinions of educationalist in
India as well as abroad reveals that the text book is an integral part of any
educational system. According to the report of the Text book committee of the
Central Advisory Board of education, “A modern educational system without
textbook is as difficult to imagine as Hamlet without the prince of Denmark”.
Text book, infact constitutes an inseparable part of any system of
education today. Even in the most developed countries, where a variety of
teaching- learning tools and techniques are available in the classroom, textbooks
continue to enjoy their respectful place. A far as History is concerned, the textbook
is an aid which is considered indispensable to all methods for the study of history.
Good text book are indispensable for the study and teaching for
various reasons.
To help the teacher.
To help the pupil
To give the minimum essential knowledge at one place.
To help in self- teaching.
To rectify the limitations of the classroom situation in most of
the Indian Schools.
To ensure uniformity of good standard.
7. HAND BOOK
A hand book is a type of reference work, or other collection of
instructions, that is intended to provide ready reference. A hand book is a treat on a
special subject. Nowadays it is after a simple but all embracing treatment,
containing concise information being small enough to be held in the hand. A hand
book is sometimes referred to as a Veda mecus ( Latin, “go with me”) or pocket
reference that is intended to be carried at all times.
Hand book may deal with any topic, and are generally compendiums
of information in a particular field or about a particular technique. They are
designed to be easily consulted and provide quick answers in a certain area. “Hand
book” is something applied to documents that are produced within an organization
that are not designed for publication. Such as a company hand book for HR, for
instance. In this case the term is used nearly synonymously with “manual”. The
name “hand book” may sometimes be applied to reference works pocket-sized, but
do provide ready reference, as is the case with several engineering hand books.
Hand books are widely used in the quick reference for various kinds of data.
8. CONCLUSION
A text book is a specially written book which contains selective and
systematic knowledge regarding the curriculum material prescribed. A hand book
is a type of reference work or other collection of instructions, that is intended to
provide ready reference.
