7. Knowledge Management Is:
• A systematic process for finding, selecting, organizing and
presenting organization “knowledge”
• Providing workers the knowledge and tools to achieve a desired
outcome, as opposed to preventing an undesirable outcome
• A work environment that rewards employees for sharing and
reusing previous experiences and practices to meet present
needs
• “Getting the right information, to the right person, at the right time
to make the right decisions”

32. Ba
(a Japanese word for shared places, networks, or contexts among people)
In knowledge-based management, offices are place where the knowledge creation
process takes place.
Ba synthesizes all physical, cultural and cognitive factors that include office spaces,
networks, communications, IT, work ways, organizational culture, and other contexts.
It needs to be treated as a cognitive workplace, not as a simple office space.

63. Knowledge Design
Knowledge design is methodology. It is designing not about things or materials or hardware
products, but rather about events, phenomena, or experiences. It is a way of embedding knowledge
of things (and technology) into events (process). Here the process of abduction rather than cling to
analytical approaches is important. This process of abduction should be followed by deduction
(applying the hypothesis) and induction (observing and verifying it).
64. Office Design Reflecting the Times
• Nissan's Cross-Functional Team literally works cross-functionally.
• Oticon in Denmark, a knowledge management best practice company, is
well-known for its spaghetti organization which accepts and tolerates chaos.
65. ชุมชนนักปฏิบัติ (CoP)
• An informal network of people who are involved in similar work or activities
• Focus on minimizing/improving systems and processes
• Must have structure, meaning, and value
• Allow for regular and new activities
• Keep a sustained level of commitment
• Enable sharing of both ‘Explicit’ and ‘Tacit
• Promote “free-flow” of information
• Range from “Blogs” to “Communities of Practice” discussion forums
• May still have controls on membership and may be sponsored/hosted by sponsor site
