‘People supporting
people to take
enterprising action
against climate
change’

1
What we want to achieve?
Support 200 community groups across Wales by
developing the capacity and capability of these groups
to take action on climate change.

Renew Wales is supported through the Sustainable Steps programme delivered through the Big

Fund and funded by money from dormant bank accounts.

2
How did the project come about?

3
Support a wide range of groups
We can support any type of community groups:
Tenants and Residents groups

Women’s groups

Rugby Club
Social Enterprises

Craft group

Community Councils
Youth Club

Faith Groups

BME Groups

Mental Health Charities

4
We can support any type of climate
change project?

5
Building Connections?

6
What support can we offer?
30 local co-ordinators will register groups, support them to
complete an action plan and identify appropriate support.

7
What support can we offer?
A pool of over 40 peer mentors who can provide mentoring,
training and technical support to community groups.

8
What support can we offer?
Web and Social Media resources to share information about
funding, other community groups, other support and news and
events.

9
What has Renew Wales achieved in
Year 1?
• 30 co-ordinators recruited from a diverse range of
organisations throughout Wales
• A pool of 50 Peer Mentors with a wide range of knowledge,
skills and experience
• Over 100 community groups signed up to receive support
from Renew Wales
• About half of these have developed an action plan detailing
what they want to achieve.
• Over 30 of these have received or have identified support via
peer mentors and other support organisations to take their
projects forward.
10

11
Some of the groups we’re working
with.

12
What has Renew Wales achieved in
Year 1?
• A diverse variety of projects being given support from Renew
Wales including:
Energy Efficiency of Community Buildings
Local Food Growing

Community Renewable Energy

Redistribution of Waste Food

Sustainable Transport Solutions
Renewable Heating in Rural Areas

Awareness of Climate Change
Sustainable Land Management

13
What next?
•

Renew Wales has just under 1 year left of it’s funding through the Sustainable
Steps programme

•

During this time Renew Wales is aiming to engage with 200 groups and to
provide support to 150 of these.

•

Renew Wales independent evaluators have produced the first interim report.
A further interim report will be available in the New Year and a final report
available before the end of the programme.

•

Renew Wales is looking and applying for funding to continue and develop the
programme

•

Build on the success of Renew Wales to ensure the long term support of
bottom up support for community action on climate change.
14
Your turn
I want to ask each of you the following questions and we will go around the room
getting the answers from everyone.
•

Introduce yourself

•

What organisation are you from?

•

What are the aims of your organisation?

•

What are the main challenges facing your organisation?

•

Do you have any ideas around tackling climate change that your organisation
is interested in?

•

Have you delivered or are you delivering any projects around climate change?

15
Your turn
Split into groups, in each group I want a mixture of people who have delivered

climate change projects and people that haven’t. If we’ve identified themes
we can try and split into groups or themes.
1) Those that are looking to develop a new climate change project share
their ideas in more detail with the group and in particular identify some
of the challenges and difficulties they face.
2) Those that have delivered climate change projects can then share what
they have done and in particular how they overcame those barriers, who
helped them, what they would do differently next time.

16
Summary
• Hopefully this session has given you the chance to do a little Peer to Peer

Mentoring with each other.
• You now have lunch so you can continue any conversations there or speak
to me.
• This is what we are trying to promote through Renew Wales. Standing on
the backs of Giants.
• We don’t need to re-invent the wheel.
