4. Lesson 3 Objectives
● Explain and demonstrate the three range
commands.
● Explain the procedures for malfunctions and
dropped ammunition.
● Explain and demonstrate the eight gun
safety rules for shooting and storing a pistol.
● Demonstrate the ability to place a minimum
of 8 out of 10 shots in a 9 inch target area at
15 feet.
5. Range Commands
● "Load": Shooters may load ammunition into
their pistols.
● "Commence Firing": Shooters may fire
their pistols down range at their targets
● "Cease Fire": Shooters MUST STOP
FIRING IMMEDIATELY, place their trigger
fingers on the pistol frame, and wait further
instructions.
● "Unload, Show Clear": Shooters will
remove all ammunition from their pistols and
display the empty chamber/bore.
6. Malfunctions
● Misfire: Place trigger finger on pistol frame,
observe the ejection port for obstructions,
tap the magazine, rack the slide and attempt
to fire.
● Obstruction: Remove the magazine, lock
the slide to the rear, clear the obstruction,
reload and resume firing.
● Suspected squib or hangfire: Place trigger
finger on the frame, keep the pistol oriented
down range, raise non-firing hand and call
for instructor/coach.
7. Dropped Ammunition or Magazines
● Ammunition and magazines dropped during
firing must remain on the ground until after
"Cease Fire" has been given and instructions
to retrieve ammunition and magazines are
received.
● Ammunition and magazines that fall forward
of the firing line must be brought to the
attention of the instructor/coach.
8. Safety Rules
● ALWAYS keep my pistol pointed in a safe
direction
● Always keep my finger off the trigger until
ready to shoot
● Always keep my pistol unloaded until ready
to use
9. Rules For Safe Shooting
● Know your target and what is beyond.
● Be sure the gun is safe to operate.
● Know how to use the gun safely
● Use only the correct ammunition.
● Wear hearing and eye protection.
● Never use drugs before or during shooting
● Store guns so they are not accessible by
unauthorized persons.
● Beware certain types of guns and shooting
situations require additional safety
precautions.
