35. Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive The RoHS
The Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical
and electronic equipment
It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE)
RoHS is often referred to as the lead-free directive, but it restricts the use of the following six
substances:
Cadmium (Cd): 100 ppm
Mercury (Hg): 100 ppm
Lead (Pb): 1000 ppm
Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 1000 ppm
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 1000 ppm
Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI): 1000 ppm
Lead as an alloying element in copper alloys is allowed up to 4.0% (40,000 ppm); in
steel up to 0.35% (3,500 ppm) is allowed; in aluminum alloys up to 0.40% (4,000
ppm) is allowed.
