The divestitures we are seeing by major players such as GPIF, Norwegian Oil Fund, CalSTRS as well as many smaller endowment funds. Has this led to an increase in PE activity in the affected sectors, the driver is that the –what can be seen as forced- selling leading to said companies trading at a discount in public markets. Which leads to the question: through ESG conscious funds investing inline with their principles, do they end up bounding their returns (in the case of tobacco divestment) and arguably making the companies who are deemed poor on the E and S vector less transparent and accountable.

Recognizing that climate-related financial reporting is still evolving, the Task Force’s recommendations provide a foundation to improve investors’ and others’ ability to appropriately assess and price climate-related risk and opportunities. The Task Force’s recommendations aim to be ambitious, but also practical for near-term adoption. The Task Force expects to advance the quality of mainstream financial disclosures related to the potential effects of climate change on organizations today and in the future and to increase investor engagement with boards and senior management on climate-related issues. Improving the quality of climate-related financial disclosures begins with organizations’ willingness to adopt the Task Force’s recommendations. Organizations already reporting climaterelated information under other frameworks may be able to disclose under this framework immediately and are strongly encouraged to do so. Those organizations in early stages of evaluating the impact of climate change on their businesses and strategies can begin by disclosing climate-related issues as they relate to governance, strategy, and risk management practices. The Task Force recognizes the challenges associated with measuring the impact of climate change, but believes that by moving climate-related issues into mainstream annual financial filings, practices and techniques will evolve more rapidly. Improved practices and techniques, including data analytics, should further improve the quality of climate-related financial disclosures and, ultimately, support more appropriate pricing of risks and allocation of capital in the global economy.

This presentation by Dr Wayne Visser briefly maps the past, present and future of corporate sustainability and responsibility, or CSR. It begins by defining CSR and introducing a four-part DNA Model, covering value creation, good governance, societal contribution and ecological integrity, which provides the basis for measuring CSR 2.0. It goes on to examine the evolution and current state of CSR, using Visser's five-stage maturity model: defensive, charitable, promotional, strategic and transformative CSR. The first four stages are called CSR 1.0 and characterise most current CSR practice, while the fifth stage is named CSR 2.0 (also transformative or systemic CSR) and describes emergent and future CSR practices. The metaphor of 1.0 and 2.0 is explained as an appropriate analogy for the changes needed in CSR, drawing parallels with the evolution of Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. Visser argues that CSR 1.0 approaches have failed to have any significant impact on the most serious global social, environmental and ethical challenges. Three reasons for this failure are examined, namely the incremental, peripheral and uneconomic nature of CSR 1.0 approaches. The presentation goes on to explore the emergent CSR 2.0 in detail by elaborating on five principles underlying this new approach, including: creativity, scalability, responsiveness, glocality and circularity. Each principle is explained conceptually, as well as illustrated with progressive case studies.
