Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world.
“Parables of Jesus, an Introduction”
Rev. Lindsey Eklund
While Pastor Rick is on a sabbatical, each Sunday we will have a message
on selected parables. This week, Pastor Lindsey spoke about the
function of parables, why Jesus used parables, and some things we need
to think about as we look at these well-known stories from a new
perspective.
In order to understand His message from the parables, we need to
understand the subject matter and some guidelines for proper
interpretation of parables.
The function of a parable is to put the known next to the unknown so
that we may learn. Jesus began speaking in parables because of the
hardness of many people's hearts. By using parables, Jesus effectively
separated the truth-seekers from the curiosity-seekers.
In Matthew 13:10-13, Jesus explained to the disciples why he spoke in
parables this way:
His disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you
talk to the people?” He replied, “You are permitted to understand the
secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. To those who
listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will
have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening,
even what little understanding they have will be taken away from
them. That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don’t
really see. They hear, but they don’t really listen or understand.
2. As we review some of Jesus' parables over the next few weeks, look for
the central truth of the parable Any other truths from the parable
should be in harmony with it. Don't use the parable to formulate new
doctrine. If we follow these guidelines to interpreting the Parables of
Jesus, we can look forward to the joy of understanding more fully the
"mysteries' or revealed truths of the kingdom of heaven.
