A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus
A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)
Stop Trying to Be Pure Hearted...
There's A Better Way - Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the Pure in Heart, For They Will
See God
Leviticus 19:2
'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
God is pure and holy and He calls His people to be pure and holy
Psalm 24:3-5
3
Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy
place? 4
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift
up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. 5
He will receive
blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior.
2. Psalm 51:10-11
10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast
spirit within me. 11
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Matthew 5:1-8
1
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat
down. His disciples came to him, 2
and he began to teach them,
saying: 3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6
Blessed are
those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled. 7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Our world does not take purity seriously…
Even many in the church do not take purity seriously
“If we are to welcome Christ into our heart, we can have
no darkness there. We must choose the light or the dark,
for they cannot exist together.”
(Maxie Dunham - “Workbook on the Beatitudes”, p. 113)
1 John 1:5-9
5
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6If we claim to have
fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live
by the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin. 8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9
If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.
Psalm 119:111-113
111
Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my
heart. 112
My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end. 113
I
hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
God calls us to an undivided heart…a single-mindedness… to be
holy people
Revelation 3:15-16
15
I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you
were either one or the other! 16
So, because you are lukewarm--
neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Confession, repentance, and forgiveness are key elements in our
walk with God. It’s the process of moving ever closer to a pure
heart.
3. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they hide nothing;
they are willing to allow the radical transformation that comes
through the unconditional love and forgiveness our Lord provides.”
(Maxie Dunham, “Workbook on the Beatitudes”, p. 126)
For Personal or Group Reflection
1 How deep is your desire to see God?
2. What difference would “seeing God” make in your life?
3. Are there particular sins or sin patterns in your life that cloud the
clarity of your inner vision?
4. What if purity of heart doesn’t come from trying to be pure
hearted? What if it comes from the wholehearted desire to see God?
What difference would that make for you?

Thank you for your continued support of this worthy cause.
New Sunday School Study
begins June 12
The Open Door Class invites you to
join us on June 12 for an 8-Week
Study of Paul’s letter to the
Philippians
Things don't always go the way we intend. It's
easy to feel discouraged because what we hope
for is badly thwarted, or because people make
11. life difficult. Paul, writing to the Philippians from prison, certainly
knew what it was like to have plans interrupted. But he maintains
robust confidence in God's overruling power, even when everything
seems to be going wrong.
These eight studies will help us learn from Paul the art of seeing
God's
purposes working out through problems and difficulties, and will
deepen our own confidence in God's power.
New study begins on June 12 at 9:00 AM in Room 12. Contact Don
Morgan dsmorg2@comcast.net for book - $8.00.
