Parables of Jesus Series
"The Pharisee and the Tax Collector”
Luke 18:9-14
This week, Gary Carlson shared a message on "The Parable of the
Pharisee and the Tax Collector". The Gospel of Luke tells this story:
"To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked
down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to
the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The
Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not
like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax
collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to
heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a
sinner.’
“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified
before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and
those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
This story is interesting because tax collectors were despised by Jews
and Pharisees were the keepers of the law. Yet Jesus said that the tax
collector was deemed righteous before God, not the Pharisee.
2. The key to understanding this parable is to understand who Jesus is
speaking to in this story. He is speaking to those who trusted in
themselves and that their actions would make them righteous before
God.
Only God can make us righteous.
In Exodus 11:7, the Lord tells Moses of the plague he will bring down
during the first Passover. He affirms that he is in control when He says
"Then you will know that I, the LORD, make a distinction between the
Egyptians and the Israelites"
The prophet Micah also reminds us that our actions and sacrifices do not
make us righteous. In Micah 6:5-8, he tells the people to remember
their journey so that they will "know the righteous acts of the Lord". He
goes on to tell them "With what shall I come before the Lord and bow
down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt
offerings,
with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of
rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn
for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord
require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly
with your God.
We must not act like the Pharisees and trust in ourselves and our actions
for salvation. We must remember that only God can make us righteous,
and that we must humble ourselves in order to be exalted! That is the
true and lasting message from this parable.
Next week's message: Pastor Rick returns from his sabbatical and will be preaching.

Would you consider making an impact in the life of a student?
We are looking for help with the youth ministry to pour the love of Jesus
Christ into the lives of students aged 10-16. The latest Barna Study
indicates that nearly half (43%) of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ
as their Savior do so before the age of 13. Almost two out of three (64%)
of born-again Christians made that commitment to Christ before their
18th birthday.
You can help in many ways:
Chaperon retreats
Mentor student leaders
Lead weekly Crossfire events - play games, eat together, share
the Gospel
Pray for our students
Teach "tweeners' Sunday School once a month
