2. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND THE PRESIDENT
The past year was marked by progress
for our industry and our organization.
In 2006, British Columbia’s technology industry exceeded the national average in
revenue growth and experienced a historical increase in high-tech employment.
We achieved growth in both GDP and BC-origin high-tech exports. In fact, BC’s
technology industry has surpassed pre-bubble numbers and is still growing.
We’ve bridged the digital divide, becoming one of the most connected provinces in
Canada with 7 out of every 10 households and 8 out of every 10 businesses having
a computer and Internet access.
The BC Technology Industry Association has continued our commitment to growth,
innovation and leadership, making significant gains on behalf of our members.
Our advocacy efforts resulted in the development of a Provincial Technology
Strategy, the commitment of 2,500 new graduate spaces, and the extension of the
Provincial Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit Program
to the year 2014.
The formalized partnership between the BCTIA and the British Columbia Regional
Science and Technology Network extends our reach to more than 1,200
technology companies across the province.
It was a busy year for the Association, delivering an extensive lineup of more
than 60 programs and events, including the Technology Impact Awards where
we honoured BC’s technology leaders and raised $64K for the BC Technology
Scholarship Fund. Our insurance program has helped member companies reduce
employee health care and life insurance costs by more than 20%.
We have every reason to celebrate the successes of the past year; we’re growing,
we’re succeeding and our future is bright.
Working together, we will continue to build our foundation for technology…
…an innovative culture where ideas beget more ideas
…where academia and business intersect
…where young people embrace technology as a career choice
…and where companies have the resources to build for the long term – growing and
mentoring our next generation of leaders.
This report celebrates our accomplishments of the past year, a path that we have
forged on behalf of our members. We look forward to working with you as we build
on these successes and seize the boundless opportunities of the years ahead.

A strong
voice
on many
fronts
Delivering on the Provincial
Technology Strategy
With the strategy completed earlier this year,
the BCTIA is now focused on the execution
of the activities and initiatives required to
achieve our goal: to double the technology
industry’s headcount and revenue over the
next five years, further diversifying BC’s
economy.
Intelligent Capital
The BCTIA continues to push for the
establishment of a $150M strategic investment
fund by the BC government that would be
matched 2 to 1 by industry. Such a fund would
significantly increase the amount of available
venture capital in BC; help companies grow,
attract and nurture talent; and have a potent
impact on the expansion of our economy.
TechTalentBC
The annual BCTIA TechTalentBC labour
study identifies human resources needs
and the actions required to address them.
The BCTIA continues to work with industry
and government to develop programs
designed to attract and retain the talented
individuals needed to fuel the vigorous
growth of the technology sector. Go to www.
bctia.org/knowledge to download a copy of
TechTalentBC 2006.
Taxation
BC must continue its quest to be the lowest-
tax jurisdiction in Canada, with progressive tax
policies that encourage the development and
retention of innovative technologies, as well
as attracting the investment, partnerships and
talent required to support our growing industry
and economy.
Raising the Industry Profile
Ongoing promotion outside the province
and country is of the utmost importance
to an industry that is global by nature. The
BCTIA works closely with the Provincial and
Federal Governments to develop and deliver
international marketing campaigns designed
to promote the various sectors and strengths
of the industry. The BCTIA launched the BC
Security Technology Snapshot, highlighting
and promoting more than 100 companies
developing technologies to meet our varied
security needs of today. Go to www.bctia.
org/knowledge to download a copy of The BC
Security Technology Snapshot.
Training for the Future
The Technology Scholarship Fund continues to
gain momentum with more than $200K raised
to date through industry donations. This BCTIA
initiative is designed to support BC secondary
and post-secondary students pursuing
careers in technology-related fields. A total of
seven grants have been awarded to date. To
learn more go to www.bctia.org/programs.
MISSION
Through the delivery of programs, services and
communications, and through ongoing advocacy
and lobbying efforts, we strive to create an
environment that attracts talent and investment
and fosters the continued growth of BC’s
technology industry.
VISION
By 2015, British Columbia will lead Canada in
technology industry employment and revenues on
a per-capita basis.
