Africans are sold into slavery
in the British North American
colonies.
1787
Slavery was banned from
the Northwest Territory which
contained the land that
became Ohio
1808
Congress banned bringing
more slaves into the United
States
1850
A Fugitive Slave Act passed
Congress which had strong
penalties for helping
runaway slaves
1861
The south began the Civil
War to protect their right to
own slaves 1865
Slavery was abolished
throughout the country with
the passage of the 13th
amendment to the U. S.
Constitution
