What is Prophecy?

What is Prophecy?
Prophecy: A supernatural utterance not known to the
speaker prior to speaking that is said in a known
tongue.
The word “prophecy” in Hebrew is the word “naba”
which means: “to flow, boil up or over; bubble or pour
forth words; to gush. It is “Spirit-inspired speech.”

•To prophesy, to be a prophet
•Speak forth by divine inspirations

•To utter forth, declare, a thing which can only be
known by divine revelation
•With the idea of foretelling future events
Prophecy is the unveiling of the heart, purposes, mind
and will of God to His people TODAY.

Why is Prophecy
Important?

1. Before God does anything in the earth, He first
reveals those plans to His servants the
prophets. (Amos 3:7)
1. The prophetic helps us to “stay the course”
and know what God is saying/doing in different
seasons. (Matt. 4:4)
1. Prophecy brings forth prosperity, deliverance
and preservation (2 Chron. 20:20; Hosea 12:13)

Two Types of Prophecy
Forthtelling: An inspired declaration of the divine will of
and purpose of God. It is spirit-inspired speech but
not predictive in nature. Its primary use is for
edification, exhortation, and comfort.
Foretelling: To predict or indicate beforehand; to make
predictions; to make inspired declarations of what is to
come. To foretell future events before they actually
occur.

Gifts of Revelation:
Word of Wisdom: A supernatural revelation by the Spirit of
God concerning certain the divine purpose and plan
pertaining to the mind, will, and counsels of God.
Foretelling; To predict or foreshow an event/events at an
undisclosed time in the future. Of or pertaining to future
events. A word (literally a word or few words) revealed by
the Holy Spirit before it actually occurs.

•Word of Knowledge: A supernatural revelation by the
Spirit of God concerning certain facts in the mind of
God- facts about people, places, or things in the past
or present.
These facts are things that COULD NOT be
known by natural knowledge.

•Discerning of Spirits: A God-given ability to see by
supernatural means into the realm of the spirit. It is
the divine ability to see insightfully into the spirit
realm and deals with the entire class of spirits:
angelic, demonic, as well as human.
A person manifesting this gifting will be able to
discern the presence and activities of the divine,
demonic, or human nature; will be able to know
(supernaturally) what forces are influencing a
particular type of behavior.

Gifts of Power:
•Gift of Faith: A supernatural ability to believe and/or
trust God without succumbing to reason, doubt, fear,
etc. This Faith given by the Holy Spirit causes the
miraculous and supernatural to occur each time it is
manifested.

Gifts of Power:
•Gifts of Healings: A supernatural ability given by the
Holy Spirit that releases/ministers healing in
innumerable ways to those afflicted/sick/smitten by
disease that ALWAYS brings about
healing/restoration without modern medical
intervention.

Gifts of Power:
•Working of Miracles: Supernatural or divine
intervention by the Spirit of God through the use of a
human vessel that interrupts/disturbs the ordinary
course of nature or order.

Gifts of Utterance:
•Different Kinds of Tongues: A supernatural utterance
by the Holy Spirit in languages spoken through a
human instrument never learned by the speaker, nor
understood by the speaker, nor necessarily always
understood by the hearer. An utterance in an unknown
tongue.

Gifts of Utterance:
•Interpretation of Tongues: The supernatural showing
forth by the Spirit of God the meaning of an utterance
in other tongues. It is not a translation (word for word)
of tongues, rather an interpretation (meaning of the
message) of tongues.
Note: A tongue uttered in a corporate/public
meeting, then interpreted is equivalent to prophecy.

Exhortation: Comforting encouragement provided

strengthening the resolve of the believer;
consolation.
Comfort: To cheer and encourage; dispelling of
grief while imparting strength.

Discerning the Voices You Hear
Testing Spiritual Voices
Not every spiritual voice that we hear is the
Spirit’s voice. Jesus reveals that He is the
Good Shepherd, and His sheep know His
Voice (Jn. 10:1-18). Be careful who you
listen to. Not everyone who sounds
spiritual is speaking by the Spirit of God.

Discerning the Voices You Hear-cont.
Many religious spirits sound good, but they
are not godly. Test, compare & evaluate
every spiritual word you receive by the
whole counsel of God’s Word. Be certain
that ANYONE who teaches, preaches, &
speaks prophetically into your life knows

Discerning the Voices You Hear-cont.
Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
Weigh their words against God’s Word,
godly counsel, and the evidence of good
fruit in their lives (Gal. 5:22-23; John 15).

Knowing the difference between what is spoken
to your soul and spirit can at times be hard to
differentiate or discern…the only way to truly
know the difference is to allow the Word of God
to divide the line between the two.

Moving In The Spirit
Keys To Developing Your Gifting

1.Prophecy comes after a divine unction or urging
from the Holy Spirit to prophesy
“Knowing this first that no prophecy of the
scripture is of any private interpretation. For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved by
the Holy Ghost.” (2 Pet. 1:20-21)
The word “moved” is the Greek word phero,
which means “to bring forth or bubble up.”

2. Prophecy comes during times of worship
(Acts 13:1-4)
Be sensitive, especially during times of
worship. Worship fosters a healthy prophetic
atmosphere. As we worship God, the word of
the Lord will “bubble up” on the inside of us
and then we can prophesy by the Spirit of
God.

3. Prophecy Comes Through Faith
The more you exercise your faith in speaking
what you believe God has spoken, the more
comfortable you will become when
prophesying.
Faith is important for prophecy because one
can only speak forth according to the
measure of faith that they have (Rom. 12:6).

4. Receiving A Word From The Lord
The Spirit of God will give a word to a person
typically by means of a single word (i.e.-
“unity”), a sentence (i.e.-“You shall love one
another”), a spiritual burden, a vision, a
spiritual thought that gives a “quickening joy”
to the person at that time. A word is not just a
passing thought, but a spirit-anointed burden
that gives its recipient a definite feeling of the
need for its expression.

5. Speaking At The Right Time
Discerning the proper time that a word should
be given is very important. Prophesying at “any
old” time in a church meeting is not acceptable.
6. Learn To Discern Your Thoughts/Feelings
From the Holy Spirit’s

7. Stir Up Your Gift
In the Greek, “stir” means to rekindle; stir the
coals that are almost out, etc. Spiritual gifts can
be quenched through sin, neglect, lack of use,
laziness, fear, etc. (Ex. 35:21, 2 Tim. 1:6, 2 Pet.
3:1)
8. Be sensitive to the “lifting” of the
prophetic spirit.

9. Learn How To Speak Prophetically
You must learn to step out with bold faith and
confidence in the spirit of God. Bold means to:
Dare to do something
Lose all fear of doing something
Throw caution into the wind

Four Realms/Levels of Prophetic Ministry

4. Office of the Prophet

1.Prophecy of Scripture
•All Biblical revelation prophesied in the OT/NT is the prophecy of
Scripture. This speaks of the declaratory and revelatory elements of
God’s Word as the highest revelation to mankind. Prophetic utterances
must be judged by the prophecy of Scripture. The logos (written word of
God) is the highest and purest form of communication from God. (2 Tim.
3:16-17)
1. Spirit of Prophecy
•The spirit of prophecy is the anointing of the Holy Spirit that enables
men and women whom do not have the gift of prophecy or calling to the
office of a prophet to speak prophetically under the inspiration of the
Holy Spirit. If believers release their faith when the spirit of prophecy is
present, they will prophesy. (Revelation 19:10; Acts 2:14-18)

3. Gift of Prophecy
•This gift is given to certain believers to bring the Word of the Lord to the
congregation. This gift has no aspect of foretelling revelation attached to
it. It speaks to men edification, exhortation & comfort. Those with this gift
should not move outside of their realm of edification, exhortation &
comfort. Not all Christians have the gift of prophecy. (1 Cor. 14:3)
4. Office of The Prophet/Prophetess
•Prophets are vessels whom Christ has chosen to function consistently
and accurately in the realm of the Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom,
Discerning of spirits, confirmations, revelations, illuminations, prophetic
utterances (foretelling & forthtelling), predictions, visions, dreams,
correction and ministry confirmations. All who prophesy ARE NOT
prophets. (Ephesians 4:11, Acts 13:1; 1 Corinthians 12:28-19)

What is a Prophet?
Prophet:
A person who speaks on behalf of a deity.
A spokesperson or mouthpiece for God
Prophets are vessels whom Christ chooses to constantly,
consistently, and accurately function in the realm of the Word
of Wisdom, word of knowledge, discernment of spirits, ministry
confirmations, revelations, illumination, prophetic utterances,
prediction of futuristic events, dreams, visions, corrections and
the like. All who prophesy are NOT prophets.

What Makes A Prophet A Prophet?
•Divine Calling: Jeremiah 1:4-5
•Propensity for visions and dreams
•Sensitivity to spiritual things
•Comprehension of prophetic matters
•Peculiar interpretive skills
•Extraordinary wisdom and instinctual insight
•Heightened spiritual discernment

Functions of A Prophet
•Prophets should be submitted to the leader/leaders of the local
church and/or be a part of the leadership of local church.
•Guard the church from heresy & demonic assignments such as:
witchcraft, demonic doctrine, sin, false accusations, etc.

•Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare

Prophetic Definitions
•Nabi-The official Hebrew word for the official
prophet. It appears 309 times in its noun form
and almost 600 times in its verb form in the OT.
This term when traced through the OT referred
primarily to one who speaks on the behalf of
someone else.

Chozeh-An ancient word for a prophet.
This type of prophet is one who receives
communications from God more from visions
and dreams than audible words. Prophets who
say they “saw” the word of the Lord more than
heard it are examples of this type of prophet.

Ra’ah or Roeh-The ra’ah prophet is the seer.
The seer focuses on the way in which the
prophet receives God’s messages. It is said
that this type of prophet also has a strong
shepherding element attached to their mantle
for ministry.

A seer focuses on the way in which the prophet
receives his messages from the Lord.
There are a couple of words in the OT that
are translated prophet or seer. They come from
words that basically mean to see, look at or
behold. The prophet or seer is one who can see
things that others cannot. This type/kind of
prophet is one to whom God directly and
uniquely reveals His word and His will usually
through revelatory dreams and visions.

How does revelation come?

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the
spirits, whether they are of God; because many false
prophets have gone out into the world.”-1 Jn. 4:1
Test/Try, dokimazo: To test, examine, prove,
scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or
not), as metals. To recognize as genuine after
examination, to approve, to deem worthy.
Testing Spirits & Judging Revelations

Let two or three prophets speak, & let the others
judge…”-1 Corinthians 14:29 (v.30-33)
Judge, diakrino: To separate, make a distinction,
to try, to discriminate or discern. To separate one’s
self in a hostile spirit, to oppose, strive with
dispute, contend.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times
some will depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits and doctrines of demons…”-1 Tim
4:1
Depart, aphistemi: To stand off, cause to withdraw, to
remove, to go away, to depart from anyone, to desert, to
fall away, to withdraw oneself.
To depart here means lit. “to stand away from.” The
reference is not a loss of salvation but a failure to walk

“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you
concerning our common salvation, I found it
necessary to write to you to contend earnestly for the
faith which was once for all delivered to the Saints.
For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long
ago were marked out for this condemnation,
ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into
lewdness and deny the only Lord god & our Lord
Jesus Christ.”-Jude 1:3-4

“But even if we, OR AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN,
preach any other gospel to you than what we have
preached to you, let him be accursed.”-Galatians 1:8
Accursed, anathema: A person or thing doomed to
destruction. A man accursed, devoted to the direst of
woes.

A stronghold (Greek: ochumora) is an area
of the mind where darkness reigns. It is a
system of logic rooted in a lie, that an
individual has come to accept. This system of
thought is formed behind any habitual
response, addiction, fixation, compulsion,
obsession, and/or inordinate fear.

As such, a stronghold is any thought pattern
alien to the Word of God. It serves as a
mental or emotional “command post” to
which the enemy has access. This mental or
emotional word or thought system is designed
to create misinformation and thereby affect
an individual’s decision making ability.
Consequently, a stronghold keeps a person
from embracing true Christlikeness. (J. Paul

Week Seven

Question:
1.Does a person or prophet need permission
from the Lord to prophesy?
1.If a prophet/person has not been granted
permission from the Lord to prophesy and does
so anyway, is he/she guilty of sin?

“Knowing this first that no prophecy of the
scripture is of any private interpretation. For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of
man: but holy men of God spake as they were
moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

Moved, phero:
1.To be moved inwardly
2.To be prompted
3.To bring forward in a speech
4.To produce

Prophecy from the Holy Spirit was never
spoken by “the will of man,” that is to say,
by man’s will. This teaches if one
prophesies by faith only, without unction,
then they prophesy according to their own
wills and not Gods.

Prophesying is not something that is done
solely by faith. Prophecy is not by the
prophet’s faith and will alone. Faith alone
does not make the Holy Spirit speak. Faith
is involved, yes, but the prophet is not
making the prophetic utterance come by
faith alone.

The seasoned prophet understands this
and is able to protect himself from
prophetic error. Prophecy is not about
faith, will or emotions, it’s about waiting for
the Holy Ghost to move. Let’s look at the
pattern. Men spoke as they were moved,
compelled and prompted by the Holy
Spirit.
Prophecy Without Permission-cont.

UNCTIONS
True prophetic utterance is always
accompanied with unction. Unction is
permission to speak. If there is no unction,
then the prophet is operating by faith
alone. Unction, Greek chrisma, means
anointing. Those that prophesy by faith
alone are in danger of tapping into a spirit
of divination.

UNCTIONS-cont.
Divination is foretelling the future by occult
means. It is important to note that
prophecy should come after you receive
unction to speak just like the prophets of
old that were first “moved by the Holy
Ghost.” As already said, unction for the
prophet is the permission of the Holy Spirit
to speak. After you receive permission
then use your faith and let the prophecy
flow.

The 5 steps for prophetic release are:
1. God wants to speak.
2. Holy Spirit gives permission.
3. Prophet’s faith lays hold of the unction.
4. Prophet speaks.
5. Prophecy judged.

Question:
What happens when a person
prophesies without an unction or
permission from the Lord?

1. “Tap” into familiar spirits (Lev. 19:3;
Deut. 18:9-14)
• The word familiar is from the Latin familiaris,
meaning a "household servant," and is intended to
express the idea that sorcerers had spirits as their
servants ready to obey their commands. “Familiar
spirits” are actually demons who act familiar with
those whom they interact with and are supposed to
be able to be trusted and believed.

2. Strengthen the hands of evildoers (Jer.
23:14)
• How do prophets/people strengthen the hands of
evildoers? By prophesying to them that all is well to
a person who is living in open blatant sin. This is
also referred to as “prophetic seduction.”
• “They have seduced my people, saying, peace and
there was no peace…”-(Ezekiel 13:10)

3. Prophesy To The Idols in One’s Heart
(Ezekiel 14:1-5)
•Biblical commentary
•Idols can also be:
• Self-Will
• Self-Advancement
• Self-Exaltation
• Self-fill-in-the blank

An idol could be anything one esteems
more important than their relationship with
Christ. It could be music, sports, personal
relationships, even their ministries.

If a person like this approaches the
prophet for a word of blessing on his idol
that is “the stumbling block of his iniquity”
and that is a sin. How will God respond
prophetically to such? Jehovah says,
“I the Lord will answer him that cometh
according to the multitude of his idols.”

What does this mean?
It means that God will tell the idolatrous
person EXACTLY what they want to hear.
This is profound and teaches that
prophetic ministry is no game.

Responsibility of the Prophetic Vessel:
“The prophet has not been granted permission to
give an answer to the hypocritical inquirer] but if the
prophet does give the man the answer he desires
[thus allowing himself to be a party to the inquirer’s
sin], I the Lord will see to it that the prophet is
deceived in his answer, and I will stretch out My
hand against him and will destroy him from the
midst of My people Israel.”

because they can, but should they?
•Prophecy is not by the prophet’s faith and
will alone.
•Prophecy is not about faith, will or
emotions it’s about waiting for the Holy
Ghost to move.

What is a Dream?
A dream can be defined as the
thoughts, or series of thoughts, or
imaginary transactions, which occupy
the mind during sleep. To have ideas or
images in the mind while in the state of
sleep. A vision while sleep.

Why Are Dreams Important?
•He reveals your calling: Numbers 12:6
•Only way to get message to us at times: Job 33:14-16
•He leads us through dreams: Matt. 1:20
•Warnings of impending danger: Matt 2:12
•He tells us of our future in dreams: Gen. 37:5-7

•They anchor you in weary times!

A Few Things You Need To Know…
•Every dream is NOT from God (Eccl. 5:3)
•Most dreams are symbolic
•The primary challenge in interpreting the dreams
that you have dreamed is interpreting the
symbolism therein.
•Dreams use word pictures or symbols to convey
their concealed messages.

Dream Interpretations
Interpreting prophetic revelation is OUR
responsibility. It is the responsibility of the one
receiving the prophecy or revelation. We must
ALWAYS seek God for the interpretation of the
revelation. We must search it out. We also must
learn to consult with other prophetic people for
clarity and understanding. Sometimes what is
considered as false prophecy may simply be a
matter of misinterpreted revelation. Spending time
in prayer will help you understand the
interpretation.

Steps To Interpreting Dreams
1. Go to the Word of God: Psalm 36:9
2. PRAY, PRAY, PRAY
3. If you still don’t have the answer, go back and do
#1 and #2 all over again
4. If you still cannot seem to receive the answer it is
okay to seek out the wisdom of a prophet or one
who has the gift to interpret dreams

Hindrances To Interpreting Dreams
1. Failure to understand prophetic symbolism
• Two types of symbolism:
• Scriptural symbolism
• Contemporary symbolism
2. Personal Sin
• “God resists the proud…”-James 4:6-7
• Resist, antitasso: anti, “against,” tasso, “to
arrange,” originally a military term meaning
“to range in battle against.” Leaving persistent
evildoers to pursue their self-determined
course, with eventual retribution.

3. When Our Relationships Are Out of Order
• (i.e.-Offenses, bitterness, unforgiveness, etc.).
The result will be misinterpretation of
revelation.

What is a Vision?
A vision could be defined as that which is seen; an
object of sight; especially, that which is seen
otherwise than by the ordinary sight, or the rational
eye; a supernatural, prophetic, or imaginary sight.

Week Nine

Two Types of False Prophets
1. Those who are direct agents of Satan. Satan
has his modern-day false prophets known as
clairvoyants, psychics, mystics, fortune-
tellers, tarot card readers, palm-readers and all
kinds of spiritualists.
2. Those whose prophetic gifts have been
hijacked by Satan. These were once genuine
vessels of God, but due to not dealing with
certain issues in their lives, their ministries
became perverted. They have true prophetic
gifts but lack true character.

• The first ones, most excellent; A person or thing
that goes before, the first person or thing in a
series.
• Powers, Exousia:
• The power to rule or reign; delegated authority;
power exercised by leaders or others in high

•Rulers of Darkness of This World, Kosmokrators:
• Refers directly to spiritual princes who rule over
nations. Every nation has a ruling spirit (a prince)
that expands and furthers the kingdom of darkness.
They draw strength from the evil works/disobedience
of humanity in that region.

•Spiritual Wickedness in Heavenly Places, Pnuematika Poneria
• Spiritual powers that are evil and live in the atmosphere
above the Earth. Specific assignment is to lure
men/women away by their “own lusts” and entice them
to follow their way instead of God’s way. Means to defile
all flesh…

• The Holy Spirit is gentle like a dove.
The false prophet tries to imitate Him.

False Prophets:
#2-They Use Their Authority to
Point People Towards the
Antichrist.
•As the Holy Spirit draws people to Christ,
the false prophet draws people to the
Antichrist (Rev. 13:12)

False Prophets:
“Dear children, this is the last
hour; and as you have heard that
the antichrist is coming, even
now many antichrists have
come. This is how we know it is
the last hour.”-1 John 2:18

False Prophets:
“For false Christs and false
prophets will appear and perform

deceive.
•As the Holy Spirit confirms truth with
miracles, signs & wonders, the false
prophet confirms lies with the same.

• Know, epiginosko: To know accurately,
recognize, know well.
• Fruits, karpos: Works or deeds, fruit being
the visible expression of power working
inwardly. As the visible expressions of
hidden lusts are the works of the flesh, so
the invisible power of the Holy Spirit
produces the fruit of the Spirit.

• Love, agape: Affection, benevolence, love
• Joy, chara: Joy, gladness
• Peace, eirene: Friendliness, harmony
between men

Ministers/Ministries

Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam
for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of

Ministers/Ministries
Cain: His name means possession or possessed.
He symbolizes self-will, one who is obssessed
with making his own way. Ministers like this do
not care about the ways of God.
Balaam: His names means “devourer.” This kind
of minister devours the sheep and use people for
their own personal gain.

Ministers/Ministries-cont.
Korah: His names means bald, baldness or
uncovered. Korah represents the rebellion and
lack of respect for God’s appointed leaders. They
are their own authority. They refused to be
fathered and are accountable to no one.

JEZEBEL
#1 Enemy of the Prophetic
“But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who
calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to
practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.”
– Revelation 2:20

Who is Jezebel?
1 Kings 16:29-33
•A Phoenician princess
•Daughter of Ethbaal, King of Sidon
•Wife of Ahab, King of Northern Israel
•A harlot, adulteress & practitioner of
witchcraft (2 Kings 9:22).

Who is Jezebel?
The name, Jezebel, is Phoenician in origin
and means “without cohabitation” or
“unhusbanded.”
Although married, her lack of submission
and her infidelities proved that marriage
meant nothing to her.

No Queen Without A “King”
•Ahab: King of Northern Israel and
husband to Queen Jezebel.
•A spirit of Ahab symbolizes the abdication
of authority, or at the very least, passive
authority. It bespeaks of a mind-set that
avoids confrontation and denies fault.

No Queen Without A “King”-cont.
The spirit of Ahab loves the position it has and
fears confrontation. Someone with an Ahab
spirit would rather make peace at any cost,
even if it leads to making an unholy alliance.
An individual under the influence of an Ahab
spirit often makes truces instead of covenants,
thus prostituting rather than sanctifying
relationships.

No Queen Without A “King”-cont.
Working in tandem, the spirits of Ahab and
Jezebel will quietly form a codependent
relationship. Both will need and feed off the
other in order to accomplish each one’s goals.
“But there was no one like Ahab who sold
himself to do wickedness in the sight of the
Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.”
—1 KINGS 21:25.

Characteristics of Jezebel
•She’s Prophetic (Rev. 2:20)
• “…who calls herself a prophetess.”
•She Teaches (Rev. 2:20)
• “ Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter
times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits and doctrines of demons…”
-1 Timothy 4:1

•Master Seductress
• With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
with her flattering lips she seduced him.
Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to
slaughter…He did not know it would cost his life.”
—PROVERBS 7:21-23.

•Master Seductress
The Jezebel spirit operates initially through
seduction. To seduce means,“to cause to stray,
to lead away from the truth, to deceive, to wander
out of the way, or to lead into error.” Jezebel is
the master seductress.

Jezebel cannot control a person who has not first
been seduced. It’s only after the seduction that
control and manipulation become effective.
Jezebel, through the decoy of kind words, drawn
by gentle means, entices her victims with vain
promises and persuasions designed to enslave
her prey in a deceptive net.

No one is better at using the allure of flattering
words and smooth sayings than her. Beware of
vain flattery, smooth prophetic sayings and
seducing tears from this spirit.

• “seduces My servants to practice sexual
immorality…” (1 Thess. 4:3)

God’s Judgment on Jezebel

•“I will cast her into a sickbed…”
•“And those who commit adultery with her into great
tribulation.”

•“Give each one of you according to your works”

How To Handle A Person With This Spirit
•Address it in the person. Be gracious to the
person, but not the spirit
•Remove that person from all leadership unless
the person repents
•Remove that person from any personal influence
with you
• You cannot remain friends with a Jezebel-they are not
humble or teachable. That spirit WILL affect you.
