1. The Health Benefits of a Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses were originally
developed by NASA to facilitate astronauts
during take offs and re-entering the earth
surface and helped them overcome the effects of
gravitational force. In the 1990s, however, it was
available for common people in the US markets.
Memory foam is designed with open cell
technology. It reacts to the heat and weight of
the body and moulds according to the body
shape. Also, it eliminates all the pressure points
your body is subjected to. Once the pressure is removed, the memory foam returns to its original
shape.
Because of these properties it is now being used in shoes and helmets as a cushion. Medically, it is
being used by severely disabled people as a seating pad for prevention against pressure ulcers and
prosthetics.
Though no proper study has been conducted (as studies like these are very expensive and can take
many years) memory foam is said to improve sleep patterns in many individuals and reduce the
endless tossing and turning at night. The reason behind this can be that once the foam has adjusted
to the body, it can relieve the pressure from body parts that are stressed. People with back pain can
have better sleep on a memory foam mattress rather that a firm, hard mattress according to the
Nation Sleep Foundation.
Certain parts of the body are affected more by the sleeping position. Ever woke up with a stiff neck
or a frozen shoulder? It is probably because the sleeping position was not correct. Using memory
foam along with a memory foam pillow helps in reducing such pains. It allows the neck and
shoulders to benefit by keeping them properly aligned as body parts that ache have a higher
temperature than the normal body. It also keeps the back bone properly aligned, allowing the blood
to flow properly in the body. When the blood flows in all directions, it allows the body to function
more proficiently and improves the brain functioning power.
Memory foams can also help in reducing and alleviating headaches, jaw aches, teeth grinding,
migraines and other such joint and public pains along with bodily soreness. Using memory foam
pillows along with the mattress can also help people over come issues like sleep apnea by keeping
the head properly elevated resulting in proper breathing. Another important health benefit related
to this is reduced allergies.
Normal foams are made of organic materials that attract dust mites because of the dead skin
particles present in them. Memory foam on the other hand is made from inorganic fibers and
prevents allergy causing particles like dust from settling in the foam. However, it is recommended to
keep children away from memory foam. The reason being that it traps carbon dioxide and can lead
2. to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
