Week 4 DQ 2 Problems of Adolescence
Describe a major problem often experienced by adolescents (e.g., anorexia
nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or delinquency). What are its likely causes? How is the
problem typically treated? Identify alternative treatments that could be more
effective. Rely on research evidence to support your views.
Guided Response: Review several of your classmates posts. Provide a
substantive response to at least two of your peers. How is the problem you
identified different from the problems your peers selected? Do you agree with your
peers treatment solutions for the problems they selected? Why or why not?
Describe a major problem often experienced by adolescents (e.g., anorexia
nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or delinquency).
Delinquency and gang membership is described in our text as a rapidly growing
social problem in the United States. While not all juvenile delinquents are part of a
gang, in most situations, they are committing their crimes with other juveniles.
What are its likely causes?
Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2010) mentioned in their papers that there can be
possible reasons why someone commits a crime or does something that is not
expected. When we say crime, it can be anything like rape, killing someone,
stealing or theft. There are different crimes out there and of different degree of the
crime. According to the information gathered by Zastrow and Navarre (1979), the
cause of criminal acts are depending on the current mindset of the criminals.
There have been studies trying to understand why people commit such things like
having violent behavior and wanting to hurt someone yet there are no concrete
evidence yet as to how people can do such things or what motivates them. There
are some though who opts to join groups and become gang members to try to
show and do bad things to others hence membership to a juvenile group is
considered as a way of aiming to do such bad things already.
The differential association theory, anomie theory, deviant subcultures theory and
control theory are the four theories we have regarding the current topic that we
have. These four theories though agrees on one thing, that once a person got a
group of people supporting his desires to do bad, then that person will be
encouraged to do more unlikely things hence joining fraternities and gangs
increases the possibility of someone doing a juvenile act. Aside from people they
are in group with, there are other factors that can also influence the behavior of
teenagers and other people that can lead them to do such things. Among the said
factors are peer pressure, family background, the cultural background and social
background they have and even their financial backgrounds. Race and gender also
impacts the way an individual behaves and sometime, acceptance in the older
category or as a mean of saying they are mature makes a teenager act violently.
With the mentioned reasons why a person commits crime, I guess it falls back to
the reality that they commit such becau
