The process by which a new species develops from the existing species is known as speciation. Charles Darwin was the first to describe the role of natural selection in speciation in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species. He also identified sexual selection as a likely mechanism, but found it problematic. A species can be defined as one or more populations of interbreeding organisms that are reproductively isolated in nature from all other organisms. When populations no longer interbreed, they are thought to be separate species. There are four geographic modes of speciation in nature, based on the extent to which speciating populations are isolated from one another: allopatric, peripatric, Parapatric, and sympatric. Speciation may also be induced artificially, through animal husbandry, agriculture, or laboratory experiments. Allopatric speciation: It is regarded as the most common type of speciation. It involves the physical separation of a species into two groups. This may occur due to climatic changes, movement of tectonic plates leading to the fragmentation of a mass of land, or eruption of a land mass, formation of waterways, or due to the presence of an impassable mountain range. Parapatric mode of speciation: It occurs due to partial spatial isolation of populations, and is characterized by a small overlap in their ranges as well as significant gene flow amongst the populations. However, the gene flow reduces due to changes in the local conditions, and the two populations become reproductively isolated. Sympatric mode of speciation: It involves the formation of new species due to a genetic divergence among a few members of the species inhabiting a single geographic area. Unlike the other modes of speciation, here genetic divergence does not arise due to increase in geographic distance, but occurs within the same niche. Peripatric speciation was Proposed by Ernst Mayr. In this type of speciation, a small group of members inhabiting a peripheral region of the range undergo reproductive isolation to form a new species. Many a time, it is considered to be a variation of allopatric speciation.

To determine the variation and the limitation between species, many concepts have been proposed. When a taxonomist study a particular taxa, he/she must adopted a species concept and provide a species limitation to define this taxa. Plant kingdom as other living kingdoms has a hierarchy structure ends mostly with species rank. Species are one of the basic units to compare in almost all fields of biology. A species is defined as the largest group of organisms in which two individuals are capable of reproducing fertile offspring, typically using sexual reproduction. Definition of a species as a group of interbreeding individuals cannot be easily applied to organisms that reproduce only or mainly asexually. If two lineages of oak look quite different, but occasionally form hybrids with each other, should we count them as different species? Idea of a species is something that we humans invented for our own convenience. ‘‘No matter what variations occur in the individuals or the species, if they spring from the seed of one and the same plant, they are accidental variations and not such as distinguish a species permanently; one species never springs from the seed of another nor vice versa” - JOHN RAY. Used a sexual system ‘‘natural system” for defining species - LINNAEUS. ‘‘A species is a collection of all the individuals which resemble each other more than they resemble anything else, which can by natural fecundation produce fertile individuals, and which reproduce themselves by generation, in such a manner that we may from analogy suppose them all to have sprung from one single individual” - DE CANDOLLE.

Ecological Succession is the process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over a period of time. But, over a long period of time, the climate conditions of an ecosystem is bound to change. No ecosystem has existed or will remain unchanged over a Geological Time Scale.

Ten years ago, Beni Balak, associate professor of economics at Rollins College, began using computer games in his classes. As a long-time computer gamer turned professor, he had observed that many of the best practices in pedagogical research were adopted by the electronic game industry. Today, the electronic game industry leads the entertainment sector economy with $70+ billion in annual sales, influencing the economy, culture, and learning. While some teachers remain skeptical about the value of video and computer games in education, over the past decade, a body of theoretical and applied pedagogical work on the use of games as teaching tools has emerged. Gamification in higher education generally refers to video and computer games and involves two related, but distinct approaches: using games as teaching tools and structuring entire courses as games. In this seminar, Balak identified the principles he employed and the specific structures of the courses he has gamified both using games (i.e., Civilization and World of Warcraft) as well as, more recently, gamifying the curriculum. Beyond the fundamental changes he made to the syllabi and the grading structure, he is beta-testing a learning management system (LMS) specifically designed for this purpose. In this seminar, he shared his progress developing a gamified course structure, how it engages students and accelerates learning, as well as the difficulties he has encountered as he continues to explore the potential of games in the liberal arts.

There are two laws of thermodynamics. On the other hand in our universe sun is the source of energy. Green plants are the only producer. Plants make their own food by sunlight with the help of water and carbon dioxide. Other animals get energy by consuming green plants, plant products and other animals. Hence the energy is cycle. So the ecosystem proves the two laws of thermodynamics.

Overview In simpler terms, Evolutionary Genetics is the study to understand how genetic variation leads to evolutionary change. Evolutionary Genetics attempts to account for evolution in terms of changes in gene and genotype frequencies within populations and the processes that convert the variation with populations into more or less permanent variation between species. The central challenge of Evolutionary Genetics is to describe how the evolutionary forces shape the patterns of biodiversity. Evolutionary Genetics majorly deals with; a. Evolution of genome structure b. The genetic basis of speciation and adaptation c. Genetic change in response to selection within populations

With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers” at a webinar hosted by Progress Semaphore on April 16, 2024. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs. Extending taxonomies to a semantic layer can be a game-changing solution, allowing you to connect information silos, alleviate knowledge gaps, and derive new insights. Hedden, who specializes in taxonomy design and implementation, presented how the value of taxonomies shouldn’t reside in silos but be integrated with ontologies into a semantic layer. Learn about: - The essence and purpose of taxonomies and ontologies in information and knowledge management; - Advantages of semantic layers leveraging organizational taxonomies; and - Components and approaches to creating a semantic layer, including the integration of taxonomies and ontologies
