This document is a group project analyzing communication skills using examples from the TV show Family Guy. It examines concepts like listening, hearing, attention, barriers to listening, and ways to improve skills. Key examples analyzed include Peter Griffin exhibiting hostile and self-centered listening by ignoring Lois' requests while distracted by TV, and pretending to listen through pseudolistening. The group members are listed as Joshua Chua Shu Min, Lim Zhen Wei, Tong Tang Lee Lung, Wee Boon Bing, and Wong Yeong Cherng.

2. LISTENING
(a) LISTENING
Listening is the active process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to
spoken and/ or nonverbal messages. It involves the ability to retain information, as well as to
react empathically and/ or appreciatively to spoken and/ or nonverbal messages.
(b) HEARING
Hearing is the act of receiving sound.
INEFFECTIVE LISTENING PATTERNS
(a) HOSTILE LISTENING
Hostile listening is an example of ineffective listening. This is being showed when Peter Griffin
listens for the express purpose of disagreement. Peter Griffin looks for information that can be
used to attack his wife, Lois Griffin by thinking that his wife has the ability to get the groceries
herself. Peter Griffin did not looked angry but he was finding fault with Lois Griffin.
(b) SELF-CENTERED LISTENING
Peter Griffin is a self-centered listener that focuses on his ideas rather than her wife, Lois Griffin.
Peter spent his time thinking of what they will say next, rather than listening to what his wife is
trying to say.

3. (a) SELECTIVE ATTENTION
Selective attention is defined as a sustained focus we give to stimuli we deem important. This
happened when Peter Griffin ignored Lois Griffin, his wife’s request to get groceries from the
shop even though the grocery shop is just downstairs.
(b) AUTOMATIC ATTENTION
Automatic attention is the instinctive focus we give to stimuli signaling a change in our
surroundings, stimuli that we deem important, or stimuli we perceive to signal danger. The
stimuli that Peter Griffin assumed is important because it is a phone call from his boss. This
scene happened when Peter Griffin is busy watching his favorite cartoon, Family Guy while her
wife is bugging him. Out of a sudden, his “boss” called him up but he immediately picked up his
phone without procrastinating and continued to ignore his wife.
BARRIERS TO LISTENING
(a) MULTITASKING
Multitasking is defined as an action trying to do two or more tasks simultaneously. This is being
portrayed when Peter Griffin is lazing on his message chair and eating cookies while watching
to his favorite cartoon “Family Guy”.

4. (b) PSEUDOLISTENING
Pseudolistening is pretending to listen but letting your mind or attention wander about
something else. This is shown when Peter Griffin is pretending to listen to his wife so that his
wife would not get mad while he is busy focusing on his favorite cartoon. Therefore, everything
that his wife said is being ignored.
WAYS TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS
(a) APPLY GENERAL ETHICAL PRINCIPLES ON HOW TO RESPOND
Peter Griffin improved his communication skills by applying general ethical principles on how he
should respond to his wife, Lois Griffin through a book that he has bought “How To Tame Your
Wives For Dummies”.
