What does the future hold for India’s weather?
Rainfall only looks to become more unpredictable with the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicting
that rainfall patterns will continue to become more erratic.
While a possible decrease in overall rainfall may sound
positive news, it is marred by the increase in extreme
weather events.

Why is the weather getting more extreme?
A senior scientist at IITM, R. Krishnan, has analysed the
changing weather in India and suggests it’s a regional
manifestation of climate change.
‘Our findings show that the pronounced surface warming of
the Tibetan Plateau has altered the spatial distribution of
atmospheric temperature, strengthened the sub-tropical
westerly winds over the region and created favourable
conditions for increased variability of the Western
Disturbances activity.’

How will extreme rainfall affect India?
An estimated 81.3 million hectares could suffer or ultimately be
destroyed across India due to extreme weather events.
India’s Minister of State for Agriculture has forecast an 18% reduction
in maize production and up to 6% for wheat and rice by 2020.
